Sounds like the Watchtower from the JW's :-))

LOL, remembers me of a JW at my door a few months ago. She first rang the doorbell(I live on the second floor), she didn't want to come in, just left a watchtower in the mailbox, she said. Then for some reason she rang again to wish me good luck in life <3 Still have that booklet somewhere...

Ive reread the Northworld trilogy by David Drake for the third time. Amazing what I missed picking up the first two times I read them.

As for the debate on what media we use to enjoy a book. I enjoy a real book. But saying that when Im driving to my my two dfaughters in the middle of the us I do enjoy an audible book. The best one so far Ive heard is A full BBC production of Agatha Christies, Murder on the Orient Express. The Miles just melted away.

As for E-readers. My wife loves them. My Grandkids do also. If space is an issue for storing real books then E-readers are the way to go.

But the main point is, Id rather have people enjoy a book in the media they prefer than not enjoy a book at all and play silly copmuter games.

When I was in Secondary school in 60s, I was lucky that my school used a progressive examination where we studied more modern book. One that we had to do was 'Day of the Triffids' by John Wyndham and it was this book that got me into Science Fiction. His other books were 'The Kraken Wakes' and 'Midwitch Cuckoo' which was made into a film called 'The Village of the Damned', I think.

Have read E.E. Doc Smith, Heinlein, and Asimov but the author I seemed enjoy the most was Anne McCaffery with her 'Dragons of Pern' series of books. Her other books about Brainships, Crystal Singers, Dinasour Planets were also enjoyable.

Agreed, my favourite author, I have everyone one of her books, two copies of some of the "Dragon" books because they changed the covers often!!

She wrote some memorable characters and I enjoyed every one.

Not been able to find an author I enjoyed as much since.

My favourite, both book and cover;

Then the reasonable question has to be asked, how much less attention are you giving to your driving?

Do you listen to the radio when you drive?

No I don't as I find it too distracting. With all the idiots on the road it takes 100% concentration to avoid them!

I tend to go for the technical Sci fi books, Dungeons & Dragons type stuff just doesn't appeal. I've only seen one Harry Potter film and got bored 1/4 way through, Tolkiens Middle earth and all that just isn't my thing. My all time favourite is still Hothouse by Brian Aldiss.

As Ive been in a taxi in London going to Waterloo Station. I can see why you need no distractions. Hell Its down right foolhardy to be a pedestrian:)

Then there is the book that is entitled 'Midnight at the Well of Souls' by Jack L. Chalker(December 17, 1944 – February 11, 2005). The wiki says it all, it's a very interesting read. If you want to know more about these 2 series, I'd start reading.

The Well of Souls series

Midnight at the Well of Souls
Exiles at the Well of Souls
Quest for the Well of Souls
The Return of Nathan Brazil
Twilight at the Well of Souls
The Sea is Full of Stars
Ghost of the Well of Souls

The Watchers at the Well series

Echoes of the Well of Souls
Shadow of the Well of Souls
Gods of the Well of Souls

I'm just about to finish reading a few book series by David Eddings (The Belgariad, The Malloreon, The Elenium, which I'm currently on, and then The Tamuli), but it's been sometime since I've read the Dragonriders of Pern series so I think that will be the next on my list to read Bernie. ;-

Cheers.

Why anyone would ordinary eyesight would want to listen to an audio translation I have no idea, sounds just lazy to me. For the visually impaired those are a godsend which is exactly what they were designed for.

Because i tend to walk into lampposts and bins if i have my nose in a book.

While navigating a city centre, no.
Whilst doing 70 on cruise-control on the Motorway, yes.

Getting the thread back on topic, here are some authors that I like to read -
Desmod Bagley, Tom Clancy, Clive Cussler, Edmond Cooper, R.E.Delderfield, Dick Francis, Geoffy Jenkins and Jean Auel.

I must say that I enjoyed the first three books of Jean Auel's Earth Children series but her last three were a bit of a dissappointment, sort of an archeology lesson with a bit of a story thrown in.

But there is one to that - DON'T DO IT - dangerous.

No it isn't. Motorways are the easiest roads to drive on; no sharp corners, no oncoming traffic. If someone can't manage to drive and listen to the radio under such conditions then i don't want them driving full stop.

I can do an easy 75mph/120kph on cruise-control and listen to the radio on a motorway. just depends on traffic conditions.

My favourite, both book and cover;

I have all all her books too and go on a reading binge every so often. The White Dragon is right up there with "The ship who sang". I also like the books she co authored with her son. I don't believe I have ordered one yet that he wrote on his own.
I have not listened to an audio book yet, but should I have to go on a long boring drive, I will certainly try it. There is a stop button for when you need to be at the top of your game.
@Chris believe me, there are a lot of road/highways you can be on more or less autopilot, because you may see a vehicle once an hour or so.
