Seems nearly half want the EU, the other nearly half want Russia, and there's a small faction who want to remain in the middle ages. So whichever of the two realistic options happens, it'll upset over half the population. The President can't win. Life on earth is the global equivalent of not storing things in the fridge. ![]() |

The ruling class says one, the people say the other. Which one should they go with? More like half the people say one, the other half say the other, the ruling class are trapped in the middle. Life on earth is the global equivalent of not storing things in the fridge. ![]() |

Question is: What will Russia do? ------------------------------------ And what side they are (Russia) to us? Strange people... It all started November 20, 2013, whilst you've just opened a topic! Everything happens for three months and accession to the EU on the agenda is not worth it! At the very least for now...! Our people tired of: disregard of the Constitution; corruption of power; adoption of stupid laws; the concentration of power in the "the hands of one" and party; thuggery on the streets and everywhere, plunder people (in wages, pensions, prices etc.) But most of you do not even know, where our country! :) Many in the West people think that it is - the Soviet Union or Russia! Our country, Ukraine - the largest in Europe, the population of 46 million people ... and 17 nuclear reactors! :) We need to build a free independent country! Without bandits, swindlers, embezzlers ... and the dominance of the Communists and variations thereof! Even children (five years) assist to adults in the fight for a new country… they building barricades on the Maidan in Kiev together with adults... Look on http://24daily.net/?p=20836 or http://argumentua.com/reportazh/5-letnie-ekstremisty-i-agenty-gosdepa-katyat-vmeste-s-mamoi-shiny-na-barrikady-maidana God with us… and Ukraine! And Victory will be Ours! Regards Alex |

It's something I've been saying since December 2011 only to be ridiculed. Well let's see what the ridiculers have to say in the next decade when it sweeps throughout Europe. The aristocracy during the French revolution thought the same way our "so-called" intellectuals are thinking today. People like me say these things about a nation and get told what are we living here for or bugger off home. The very same people who don't have the courage to stand up and defend the countryThey are living in. They depend on the likes of us to defend them. It's time they stood and defended themselves as people have had enough. Do I wish to see it happen? No! Can I stop it? NO! C'est la Vie. |

Upon the face of it, no he can't. Ukraine apparently wants to join the EU but, do we want them? I got taken to task the other day from someone that accused me of having "extremely simplistic prejudices and negative stereotypes against Eastern and Southern Europeans". Perhaps I was right to hold those views. How are you right to hold those views? Because one country is having a popular revolution at the moment? And does the EU want Ukraine as a member state? No, not at the moment. And there are no direct plans that would allow them to join. The best we are giving them is an association agreement. They adopt some of our laws, respect democracy and human rights and in return they get much easier access to the European market. Thats it. |

How are you right to hold those views? Because one country is having a popular revolution at the moment? Ukraine is not a member state. And in non of the actual member states there is a revolution going on. So how is your view right? |

How are you right to hold those views? Because one country is having a popular revolution at the moment? He didn't say the Ukraine was a member state. The point is that if the Ukraine joined the EU now it would be a "troublesome" member state. This we do not need. Life on earth is the global equivalent of not storing things in the fridge. ![]() |

He didn't say the Ukraine was a member state. Yeah but there are no plans to let Ukraine join the EU, so its kind of irrelevant. |

[quoteThe above IS a threat to Russia.[/quote] Or so the Russians seem to think. Which is why they object to it, and which is why the pro Russian half of the population (of which the current government is a part of) is against any further association with the EU. |

Russia want to keep Ukraine within its sphere of influence and will do a lot to preserve that status. I think the US has been (publicly) treading the fine line between the government and the opposition "factions" the very well, somewhat better than the EU. Obviously we only see the public side of things so I can't comment on what is going on behind closed doors. Russia want to keep Ukraine within its sphere of influence and will do a lot to preserve that status. Oh nonsense. Russia does not need Ukraine, it just doesn't want another country to join a block it considers to be its rivals. But Ukraine is not like say Chechnya. Its not going to invade the place if it were to actually definitively side with the EU. Its more likely that it would impose a number of economic sanctions, including closing the gas valve to Ukraine as well as perhaps some European countries. Besides, the cost of invading Ukraine would be extremely high for Russia. Its armed forces are a sham and Ukraine is a big country. Not a place you want to send troops when half of those people hate Russians. Besides, invading a sovereign country would come at a very high economic and political price as well. So Russia is going to play this as usual. They are going to support the pro Russian government, under the guise of supporting the officially recognized democratically elected government, with equipment, money and trade deals. At the same time, its going to accuse everyone in the West from picking the side of unlawful protesters with links to all kinds of extremists groups in their attempt to overthrow the legitimate government. |

Oh nonsense. Russia does not need Ukraine. But it would be a mistake to assume that people will fight for things like past glory without taking their current situation into account. Putin is not some crazy nationalist who longs to the glory days of the USSR. He is very much aware of the costs of things and he knows that invading Ukraine is just not worth it because of the costs. Sure, he will fight, but he will fight behind the scenes, with deals that make it more attractive for Ukraine to stay neutral or side with Russia. But that is as far as he will go. |

Unrest in the Ukraine ?? Time for the Administration to cluck their tongues and wring their hands in feigned anguish. |
