Surely the Americans here are aware just how tough the pioneer women were who came the New World. Those women did everything with the men and were tough as nails. If they didn't, the families wouldn't have survived.

Why yes, but the Royal Academy of Sciences didn't. Those rarefied circles just saw their wives who were required by the fashion of over restrictive corsets to have vapors almost on cue. It is from those observations and not field studies that the BS theory springs from.

An old anachronism being continued against more recent more enlightened ways?

Or a cruel corruption of old ways and a continued sham?

Are Sharia councils failing vulnerable women?

In a small terraced house in east London, a woman and her husband argue before an Islamic scholar who sits on a dais above them in a room that looks and feels like a court. ...

... "... well, you can't go against what Islam says."...

All 'what is said'? Or all what is conveniently misogynistically misinterpreted?

Times change. We've moved a long way from lonely desert caravans and the days of 'lawless' tribal feuds... Or have we?

I really do think we made a big mistake in 1947.

I think that can be said of a lot of countries that were either part of the old Empire or occupied after WW2. But the UK could not afford to stay, we were not just broke after WW2, we were in debt, to you know who.

Which has to ask questions on that countries foreign policy, as expressed by those Republicans McCarthy and Goldwater and their anti-communist stance.

I spent most of my schoolboy days in Sudan, Kenya, Ethiopia, Djibouti and Eritrea all countries that these days, are hotbeds of corruption and lawlessness.

An unholy religious perverted surprise for America?

Texas abortion bill vote...

A vote on a new law which could close most of the abortion clinics in the US state of Texas came too late to pass...

The senate had approved the bill, which bans abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy and requires all procedures to take place in surgical centres. ...

... A Democratic senator tried to stand speaking for long enough to prevent voting on the bill, but was stopped after 10 hours when the chairman ruled she had gone off topic. ...

... He reportedly hinted that the vote could be held again at a second special session. ...

... The new law would reportedly mean only five of Texas' 42 abortion clinics would be able to remain in operation.

Opponents say this will force women to travel hundreds of miles or resort to dangerous methods...

This one, unfortunately is not only in the USA. However, what of the supposed land of freedoms? Or is that not for women in the USA??

Martin

It's called filibustering Martin, it is what happens in politics.

And mandatory pregnancy is what happens in places where religion is government.

It's called filibustering Martin, it is what happens in politics.

The emphasis was more to highlight that such a desperate tactic had to be used rather than a more woman-sympathetic discussion winning out.

Looks like all it takes is a 'special meeting' to be convened to exhaust the filiblustering... Or can the press and public opinion intervene?...

All sounds rather unfortunately Irish to me... :-(

Is Ireland very slowly taking a very small step into more enlightened times?

Ireland's parliament approves 'life-saving' abortion

Lawmakers in the Republic of Ireland have voted to legalise abortion under certain conditions for the first time. ...

... The vote follows the case of an Indian woman who died in hospital after she was refused an abortion.

The debate revealed deep splits in the predominantly Roman Catholic country. ...

Ireland's parliament approves 'life-saving' abortion

Meanwhile, Texas USA takes a step back into the uneducated dark ages:

Texas passes one of toughest anti-abortion laws in US

... More than a thousand pro-choice and anti-abortion demonstrators packed the state capitol in Austin late on Friday night as senators voted on legislation that has made Texas the focus of nationwide abortion-rights activism.

The senate passed House Bill 2 by 19 votes to 11 just before midnight local time. Texas governor Rick Perry is now due to sign it off.

Texas is one of several states that have sought to restrict access to abortions...

... the Texas proposal is on a path to litigation, to being held unconstitutional. We'll have to wait for the courts to ultimately decide." ...

... Garcia believes that the publicity generated by the bill and the degree of dissent marks "a tipping point for women in Texas and across the country". The 62-year-old said the legislation is "part of an extreme agenda by radical right groups who would prefer to ban abortions around the country".

Democrats argue that the bill will force the closure of all but five of the state's 42 abortion clinics, resulting in a loss of access to other family-planning services they provide, such as advice and disease screening.

Opponents also claim it will force women in rural areas to travel vast distances or seek medical help from black-market sources. ...

'Texas thinks of women as second-class citizens – if it thinks we're citizens at all'

Some Democrats see the abortion row played out in Austin's statehouse as a turning point for Texas liberals. But with the bill now passed by the senate, others warn that life will get even harder...

There are other more apt descriptions but I'm being overly charitable for the sake of sensibilities on these boards.

Only in the USA?

Martin

All beyond comment.

A lot more education is needed for all our world and especially so in that area. From that, there may be better understanding for all.

India is notoriously in the news again:

Mumbai photojournalist gang-raped

A 23-year-old photojournalist has been gang-raped by five men in the Indian city of Mumbai, police say.

The woman, who was on assignment on Thursday evening in the Lower Parel area when she was attacked, is in hospital with multiple injuries.

She was accompanied by a male colleague who was beaten by her attackers. Police have arrested one of the suspects...

... "The patient has been with us since the unfortunate incident. As of now, she is stable," the hospital said in a statement on Friday morning.

The attack has led to outrage in India with many taking to social media to express their anger.

"Sick and deeply disturbing,"...

In my book, rape is one of the vilest crimes a man can commit. However, it amazes me when I see that many highlight these incidents occuring in other countries around the world.

I think it would be best to actually clean up one's own backyard before commenting about another country.

Achieving this, then the information/tactics used could be passed on to the relevant countries to assist them.

Unfortunately, it is only India that has hit the World headlines, and that was more because of the extreme violence rather than the rape itself.

For contrast there is this unwholesome example for Scotland from times gone by not that long ago:

Eigg’s Massacre Cave

Have we really progressed so little?

Much better education needed?...
