There are 84 polystyrene (or whatever they're made of) tiles on my bedroom ceiling. I have counted them many times. Maybe I should paint a sheep on each one.

No I mustn't, I must be strong, I mustn't ... OK normal service is resumed.

Three people have a meal in a restaurant. The maître d’ presents the bill which is $30, so each diner pays $10. Later the maître d’ realizes that the bill should only have been $25. To rectify this, he gives the waiter $5 to return to the diners.

On the way to the table the waiter realises that he cannot divide the money equally. As the diners didn't know the total of the revised bill, the waiter decides to just give each guest $1 back and keep $2 for himself.

Now that each of the diners has been given $1 back, each has paid $9, bringing the total paid to $27. The waiter has $2. If the diners originally handed over $30, what happened to the remaining $1?

No they haven't!! they each paid a third of $28, 2 from 30 = 28.

1/3 of 28 = $9.33, but each diner has $1 in his pocket .....

(I know the answer but I ain't telling :-)) )

Bill = $25, refund = $3 Waiter $2 total $30.

Message 1217228 - Posted: 12 Apr 2012, 12:03:45 UTC - in response to Message 1217192.

A man has two girlfriends whom he visits every Sunday, one who lives uptown and the other downtown. He likes them both equally, so he lets the trains decide which one he will visit each time. He arrives at the train station at purely random times and simply takes whichever train arrives first.

But over time, he finds that he’s visiting the uptown girlfriend much more often than the downtown girlfriend, even though there are the same number of uptown and downtown trains arriving at the station each day, that run regularly 6 times an hour. Why?

Because the uptown girl is better looking.

Correct, a quick count up gives the answer. There is $25 in the till, $2 in the waiters pocket, and $1 each in the diners pockets. 25+2+(3x1)=30. It's an oldie but a goodie and gets people every time. Sorry Nick!

That's OK, I knew this riddle of old but had never tried to work it out.
