A woman from Los Angeles who was a tree hugging, liberal Democrat and an anti-hunter purchased a piece of timberland near Colville, WA . There was a large tree on one of the highest points in the tract. She wanted a good view of the natural splendor of her land so she started to climb the big tree. As she neared the top she encountered a spotted owl that attacked her. In her haste to escape, the woman slid down the tree to the ground and got many splinters in her crotch. In considerable pain, she hurried to a local ER to see a doctor. She told him she was an environmentalist, a Democrat, and an anti-hunter and how she came to get all the splinters. The doctor listened to her story with great patience and then told her to go wait in the examining room and he would see if he could help her. She sat and waited three hours before the doctor reappeared. The angry woman demanded, "What took you so long?" He smiled and then told her, "Well, I had to get permits from the Environmental Protection Agency, the Forest Service, and the Bureau of Land Management before I could remove old-growth timber from a 'recreational area' so close to a waste treatment facility. I'm sorry, but due to Obama-Care they turned you down." "Freedom is just Chaos, with better lighting." Alan Dean Foster |

Mark, is the reference to "Obama-Care" the reason you chose to post this to the politics threads? Changing the term to "officialdom" or "paperwork" or any number of others would make it non party political. Or was it the "tree hugging, liberal Democrat? What's wrong with "hippy"? Apologies for the sense of humor failure, though I have to say it isn't your best. I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that ... |

That joke is extremely funny, and if you change the terms into the more neutral terms you suggest, it would not be anywhere near as funny. The joke is funny *because* of the politically charged language in it, not 'in spite of' it. Do you need someone to explain the humor to you? It is quite likely the funniest joke I have heard in the last 5 years or so. |

Sorry to hear that, may I recommend Jimmy Carr's book "Only Joking: What's So Funny About Making People Laugh?", to my mind it's much funnier than Mark's joke. How funny you find the joke says a lot about yourself. If you think about it, I doubt you would think it would get laughs told at a Sierra Club meeting. |

I'd say the joke is a bit ... limp. |

I'd say the joke is a bit ... limp. There's a little pill that can help with more rapid and vigorous response to my jab, ha ha. |

I'd say the joke is a bit ... limp. Perhaps turnabout is not fair play, and the sense of humor is now ... deflated? |

A 110 year old man from Kansas City, MO who was a gun-toting ultra right-wing conservative purchased a large tract of land in Illinois so his grandsons and great-grandsons could grow corn and sell it to be turned into ethanol. Well, one of the neighbors to the land, a 93 year old man who was also an ultra right-wing conservative, thought ethanol was a bad idea and he went to vociferously complain to the man about how the land was being used. When the 110 year old man had had enough, while the 93 year old still complained, he went to get his gun, came back and fired. Unfortunately, being 110, his aim was off and shot himself. In a region that would be difficult for a man to tolerate being shot in. As an ultra-conservative, hating hospitals and everything related to them, he went to a local charitable lady add asked for her help. She refused. She told him, at 110, he didn't have use for that kind of thing anymore. |

I found it quite amusing, as a dig against 'elf 'n safety, and political correctness. But no the Greens wouldn't see the funny side. Yes, I found it amusing too. A derivative of this joke did the rounds here in the UK back several years ago. Does a follow up on a story always or sometimes beat the original one? Mark comes in best here with his original posting, be it a joke or not, followed next by Sarge. Anyone better? |

It was a joke, a barb at political correctness, the current administration in the USA, and those that think the answers to everything are green and white.... Glad to see that some of you have fun with it. "Freedom is just Chaos, with better lighting." Alan Dean Foster |

Does a follow up on a story always or sometimes beat the original one? Mine was not a joke, it was a skewering of perceptions. |

There was a debate stop for a GOP candidate. Addressing the crowd he said The media has continued to be biased. Why, consider Star Trek. There is a one-world government -- Scotty is Scottish, Chekov is Russian, and Kirk is from the US. > They get all their medical care for free. > All the women work instead of having kids and staying home. > Everyone fools around without being marriage. > There is never any mention of God. Instead, science solves everything. > There is no private enterprise -- the Federation runs everything. > > Why is there never any representation of good Republican principles in the show or movies? > > He then paused for dramatic effect. > > And a voice in the audience drifted across the crowd… > > Well duh! It's in the FUTURE dude, not the PAST! |

There was a debate stop for a GOP candidate. Addressing the crowd he said +1 ... though it's a terrible oversimplification of Star Trek. Recall that in Season 5 or 6, Picard likened Kirk & Spock to George W> Bush. :) |
