I have suspended work on seti and am trying to get about 25 wu's uploaded , The best I can think of to help this situation for now , untill the staff can fix it anyway , is to back off from crunching for a couple days , untill this can be straightened out. I only keep a 3 day cache , so there is plenty of time to get the wu's done before they expire , providing , this gets fixed by monday or tuesday evening. No sense in getting more wu's done and just congest the upload pipe more than it already is... once this is fixed... I hope this will help some ... ( EDIT) I just finished uploading 44 tasks that took about 6 hours trying to get uploaded... |

Not sure but is it a BOINC 6.12.* problem? Using 6.10.60 I have no major problem on my PCs, yes there is backoffs but I get all up/downloaded without clicking retry or anything. |

Either way , It has been working fine , untill we had the current server problem , I just don't see any sense making it worse , when , by backing out for a day or 2 , I can maybe help the system manage better , and maybe help others get their uploads done in time... It just seems sensable to work together for the betterment of the project. After all , I'm not doing this for the credits ,I'm doing this Just to support the scientists efforts to discover whatever may be out there ... Maybe i'm kinda stupid in that way... LOL |

You're certainly not stupid, Floyd. And your effort is noble, but ya gotta understand that unless about half of the computers on the project gave it all a rest, it's not gonna put much of a dent in things. You do what is right for you, my friend. The kitties are just slogging along and dealing with the comms boondoggle as best they can. "Freedom is just Chaos, with better lighting." Alan Dean Foster |

I know what you mean , every journey or effort starts with just one step , I'm not what you would call a leader , Just a flunky is a more apt description i guess... but something needs to be done , maybe this will make others understand the need to work with the system , instead of just fighting and complaining about it... when you have done all you can do to stand , then just stand.... at least I have tried ... |

Ive done gone and started abuseing the retry button. :) Nothing galls me more than to see a download stuck at 95% and with a 2 plus hour back off.
Old James |

With the current limits, I have not been able to keep Piggy fed lately without a good deal of intervention. My laptop, on a separate account has had no problem through all of the last few months. The few work units it needs have been available every few days. Piggy, on the other hand requires a lot of work, and has been hobbled lately. Steve Warning, addicted to SETI crunching! If you use the retry button you will get the file sooner. Otherwise you will have to wait for the resheldureing program to do the same for you. It will not disturb other users. |

Using 6.10.60 I have no major problem on my PCs, yes there is backoffs but I get all up/downloaded without clicking retry or anything. 6.12.xx is a problem when there is any sort of missed upload/download/Scheduler request. The intial backoff is too large. On the next miss it's way, way, way, way too huge. You can't imagine what happens if there is a 3rd miss. I've got 2 systems, one with 6.12.33 & the other with 6.10.58. 6.10.58 requires no intervention on my part to keep it's cache full (at least up to the present server side limits). 6.10.33 runs out of GPU work every day & every night when i'm not there to manually help with downloads or Scheduler requests. If people pound the retry button until they get their work, and there's a finite amount of bandwidth available to everyone, you are essentially pushing yourself to the front of the queue and pushing everyone else back, forcing them to wait longer simply because they are not pressing the retry button too. Personally, I don't think that's fair or appropriate. |

Well , now two of us have gone NNT to help relieve the server load. Since I also have a couple days stockpile of WUs, I'll get by with those. If I run out there's always my other projects. I remember around this time last year when the project went down for 4 or 5 weeks. (sarcasm) How did anybody manage to survive that catastrophe? (/sarcasm) |

I dont make a habit of pounding the retry, But when I find 95% downloaded work units with hours long back offs, Yes im going to hit the button. And if thats unfair then maybe Dr A. should just get rid of the button.
Old James |

I can see your point. But pressing a button does not meens that you are abusing something. The button are there for a reason. If it's fair or appropriate to use the button is up to the the user. I'm quite sure that this community first of all doesn't notice this behaviour and secondly that they accept it. It is however (my guess and experiance) that if as sooner a file request will be handled, what ever place queue in line, all users will benefit from that in the long run. If more the than 1000 persons do press the button within one minute then there is a problem but that will not not happen. |

How do you know it isn't YOU that's being forced to wait because everyone else is pounding the RETRY button? Get even, don't get upset...:) Seriously, I only get so agitated when I'm on the verge of totally running out of work. I mean down to less than a handful of workunits left. And then only if I know there's work available...but I just ain't getting any of it. Then, that button better be strapped in tight and hanging on, cause there's gonna be some Major ABUSE headed its way!! or, I just take a nap. I can always fret about it again later... Old Farts can do that, ya'know... Lt |

But pressing a button does not meens that you are abusing something. I consider it abuse if you press it repeatedly simply to force all your work through. If it's fair or appropriate to use the button is up to the the user. Absolutely, and I know many disagree with my personal views. However, I like to exercise my right to show a different viewpoint so that maybe people who are reading might think twice about following suit and just let BOINC do it's thing like I do. It is however (my guess and experiance) that if as sooner a file request will be handled, what ever place queue in line, all users will benefit from that in the long run. I still consider this "cutting in line". Sure, all users will benefit once you've got your work through, only they had to wait longer while you used a portion of the finite bandwidth that they could have used. ...and what happens if your computer is 10x faster than theirs and you keep "cutting in line" ahead of theirs? Does it still benefit them? If more the than 1000 persons do press the button within one minute then there is a problem but that will not not happen. Maybe... but if more people read the forums and seem encouraged by the idea, it can become a reality real quick. |

How do you know it isn't YOU that's being forced to wait because everyone else is pounding the RETRY button? Get even, don't get upset...:) Using my "cutting in line" analogy, I think it's safe to say that everyone who pounds the retry button is forcing everyone who doesn't press the retry button to wait longer at some point in time. Maybe not every time, but the odds are still that the action has obvious logical repercussions to other users. I'm not upset at all. I don't get upset over these things. I just find it amazing how many people only think of themselves and never consider how their actions affect other people, but I know that no matter how much I try, people will rationalize themselves into believing that their actions are actually good and for the better of the project when it really comes down to selfish-ism. This tends to anger people when I point it out because most people don't like to think of themselves as selfish, and invariably someone comes along to help rationalize the action so people don't have to feel bad about what they're doing. Seriously, I only get so agitated when I'm on the verge of totally running out of work. Old Farts can do that, ya'know.. I never worry if I'm out of work from one or more projects. I only become concerned if I can't get any work from all of my projects. Otherwise I simply let BOINC do its thing. |

Maybe... but if more people read the forums and seem encouraged by the idea, it can become a reality real quick.
with the uploads so messed up and the downloads so messed up , with several hundred thousand hosts , there is a very good chance of 1,000 retry's being hit at one time right now , normally not , but with all the difficulty getting uploads and downloads thru... could easily happen ! |

And if thats unfair then maybe Dr A. should just get rid of the button. I think Dr. A. should program it into BOINC so that you only have 3 retry presses in 15 minutes. After the 3rd button press, the retry button should go grayed out for the entirety of the back-off duration. |

..and if we take this to be true, then everyone pounding retry is essentially creating a distributed denial of service for all other users trying to access the project. |
