Message 1156346 - Posted: 26 Sep 2011, 17:36:05 UTC

I am getting a new 6 core computer and I was wondering if Cruncher has a program for that like he has for a quad which I am running now?
Thanks,

The Lunatics application works for both quad and hexa cores. The difference is not the number of cores but the additional instruction sets (SSE, SSE4.1, etc)

I assume you are talking about the Lunatics app. If so it depends on which 6 core you get. An AMD will require the SSE3_AMD app. The Intel will work best with the SSE4.1 app. or the SSS(3 S's)3 app

Thank you both for your rapid reply. I am getting an AMD hexa. Would an NVDIA card speed things up in addition?

I suggest Miklos get and run CPUZ to check his current CPUs and then do a Lunatics install...
If I read his returned results correctly, it appears right now he is running an old SSE only app.

Mark, I did not know that was an older version. I thought I needed to run SSE for the Astro and SSSE for the enhanced versions. I could be wrong.

I would just run the current Lunatics installer and it should sort things correctly for you....if both your CPUs are capable of SSSE, that is the best choice.

Unanswered question:

Would an NVDIA card speed things up in addition?

Yes. A lowend card like my GT 240 gets about the same as my AMD 1090T hexcore. The Fermi models would far outrun the CPU. Will leave it to others to say how much. If you want model recs, say so. Look for compute capab 1.3 (for double prec. math) or better if you want to run certain other projets like Milkway. Not needed at SETI or Einstein that you run now (but things could change - I don't do so well on predicting the future).

Just remember that on Seti CUDA is king. On other Projects ATI is faster. but not by much anymore. Again that is if you are considering another project to run if you don't have any seti up and running

The current Lunatics rev 409 Astropulse application for CPU requires only SSE, and outperforms older versions which were built with various targeted capabilities. SSE2 and above versions might be added again sometime in the future.

Could anyone take me through, step by step, on optimizing from the Lunatics, on my 6 core AMD computer, please?

B.t.w The Installer offers a step by step installation of CPU and NVIDIA and/or ATIGPU!

Did you Check, with CPUz, f.i. what your Hex-Core is capable of?
CPUz DownLoad.

If it's capable of doing SSE3, then tick the AMD SSE3 box, in the Installer.
If it also has SSSE3x, then you would choose this box, in the Installer.
Or SSE4.1.
Don't know if you want to use a GPU?
The Next Pages of the Installer, are about, NVIDIA and ATI GPUs.

Both BOINC (X:\Program Files) and DATA Folder (X:\ProgramData\{WIN 7}, on
1 or 2 HDDs.

1.) Go to Lunatics Downloads
2.) Download Installer (32bit or 64bit)
3.) Run Installer, click next, click agree,
4.) Select the CPU & Cuda apps supported by system, click next,
5.) Select ATI apps supported by system, click next,
6.) Click Install, (the installer will shut down the Boinc Core client, install the apps, and restart the core client.)

Really, when it comes to speed, I do not think it went that much slower. In fact I had hoped for a little more from my current processor when it comes to speed.

But when it comes to instruction sets, as pointed out by Skildude, this is not something that comes by means of the software built into the operating system, but rather is a function that is directly supported by the processor.

I guess this means firmware. Am I wrong on this point? Any clear explanation or listing of this is welcome.

What instruction sets am I supposed to have on my computer and is one better than the other (one instruction set is superseded by another, perhaps)?

If you want faster proccessing try the Lunatics installer.
See a few posts below by Claggy.

The Lunatics installer contains different version of optimized apps using different instruction sets.
The I7 supports SSSE3 and SSE 4.1.
You can check using CPUz.

On most systems SSSE3 is slightly faster.

I've had my hexa for over a month, and in that time S@H has had "no projects available" for it over 50% of the time. My GPU on the other hand has been fed more than that. So if your machine is on all the time, I would recommend using your GPU.
