I'm ready to try an optimized app. What's the best for my :

AMD Athlon(tm) II X2 245 Processor [Family 16 Model 6 Stepping 3]
CAL ATI Radeon HD 2300/2400/3200 (RV610) (256MB) driver: 1.4.1385

running Windows 7 64 bit?

Fot your CPU based on what specs I could read from Wikipedia I'd go with the Lunatics' Unified Installed and select SSE3_AMD.

A better way to know would be to head to cpuid(dot)com and get the latest version of CPU-Z. That way you can know for sure what your CPU is capable of.

SSE2 would also be a safe bet if you do not feel like sleuthing around.

As for you GPU I have no experience with ATI's. I consider 512Mb to be the minimal with nVidia cards but I'll let someone familiar with the Radeons field this one.

yes run the SSE3_AMD. I wouldn't bother running the hybrid GPU app for your GPU. That GPU isn't very powerful.

In Boinc Manager's startup messages, SSE3 is called PNI (Prescott New Instructions) for many (or perhaps all) AMD CPU's with that feature. That had to be explained to me when I had the same confusion. CPU-Z is correct. And, AMD's 4a is not the 4.1 in the Lunatics installer, so agree, use the SSE3 option.

No problem !

There is one thing you should be aware of.
When running a standard "stock" setup if a project (I.E. S@H) makes a newer science app available your BOINC client will automagically download and install it, keeping you updated. Installing optimized science applications will disable this feature and make it your job to watch out for and install newer apps when they become available. No big deal as the process is the same as you just did (get latest installer, run it, crunch) but you need to be diligent and do some housekeeping once in a while...say at least every six months.

This mean your CPU have/support the SSE, SSE2, SSE3 and SSE4A instruction sets.

Like already mentioned, check SSE3_AMD during Lunatics Installer V0.38 usage and you are fine.


The next one two months and S@h will release S@h v7, which will replace S@h Enhanced.
Then you need to install new apps, if not your machine don't get WUs.

Hi Mark, yes, the warning is old but still applies. Sometimes things just don't go right during an install and everything can get wiped out. This doesn't happen often, and you can usually get by with just running the installer over the top of what you have but.....

Looks like I got lucky. Everything worked installing while running.
Seems to be quite a speed up too. I'm happy.
