Message 1144689 - Posted: 24 Aug 2011, 21:14:08 UTC - in response to Message 1144675.

read that all the great rivers of the world flow down fault lines. I live four miles or so from the North Saskatchewan river.

We were talking about this when I was on a two hundred level geography course at the University of Alberta. The same process that makes the Mariana Trench in the ocean also makes low spots on the land where rivers tend to flow. A good example would be the St. Lawrence river, or the Mississippi river. (Is that the Misterssippi?)

Of course there are some that are saying wrongly that earthquakes are caused by Gays, pure rubbish. What next? Disabled people? Some people are really stupid and yes their willful ignorance is showing.

Oh and during 1812 the Mississippi river briefly flowed north. the east Coast needs better earthquake building codes, brick buildings/house(unreinforced masonry in new buildings is illegal out west for good reason) collapse in either bigger quakes or quakes that last longer. Bricks can kill.

Winning... but having been a veteran of the Sylmar quake(6.4?) from a few miles away from the center.. the east coast quake while not major is not exactly "mild" either. 6.4 threw me out of bed, and the 5.4-6.2 aftershocks were nothing to sneeze at either. Those will definately get your attention.

Is that the one from 40 years ago? It got Me up out of bed early and I lived in Dominguez CA at the time(part of the City of Carson today, with a North Long Beach zip code), but then I had to get up anyway as My parents and I were going north on a fruitless quest for a better paying position for Dad, We turned around after crossing the Washington/Oregon border, no luck, but I had a decent time at least and I think I have slides of the trip somewhere that Dad may have taken. Oh and It was a 6.6 and 100 times bigger than a 6.4. the 1994 Northridge earthquake was a 6.7 and It holds the record for ground movement as It was felt 270 miles away in Las Vegas NV and at the time I lived in Hesperia CA. I feel for the East Coast, but still except for here and there, their not prepared, the next one might be bigger or just shake longer, yesterday they got lucky and were handed a warning, unreinforced brick buildings and earthquakes or houses not secured to a solid foundation do not mix. But then CA building codes are tougher in this regard, they have to be, lives depend on It.
