I'm not nearly as intense at this as some of you folks and don't check in here often but I've been in for a long time.

Lately I've seen no work going on and was wondering what was going on (if the problem was on my end or SETI's.)

Lot of good info here, much of it is WAY over my head but that's OK. Thanks for the posts, now I know whats going on, and to the team behind this thank you so much for your hard work, this is an awesome project.

I had a thought... it's probably been discussed but just in case...

With all the computing power out here available to this project would it be at all possible for some (a lot of?) the SERVER load to be distributed like the processing load is?

I'm guessing it would take a major rewrite of some code but it might be worth it.

It has been thought of before, and based upon my understanding, this isn't an over-stressed CPU problem that can be divided up among participants. It seems to largely be an I/O problem with the upload/download bandwidth. They are also dealing with an extremely large database that requires gobs of RAM to run smoothly, which must remain local on the server.

The guys in the lab have played around with swapping the RAM from other servers to see if it makes a difference, and options are being looked into to better utilize the available bandwidth, but solutions are very slow coming for various reasons.

To change it would mean someone donating a good some of $ or hardware to SETI@home. If I had the means I would. It's a great project with the potential to discover what is probably the most exciting thing in mankind: to discover we are not alone. Humans can't listen to all of the sky all of the time. SETI@home is probably one of, if not the only project, that listens to the skies just about 24/7. If we miss even one second, that second could mean listening to or missing the message we have all been waiting for.

Was someone playing with one of the routers recently by chance? It seems that my computers at work haven't been able to contact anything since about 2011-08-22 21:30 UTC. From what a few others have said it looks similar to when the first corrupt routing table was fixed in the PAIX router.

We're looking into (c) at the moment, and solving (a) may be far too painful (we don't have easy access to this router, which is a donated box mounted in donated rack space 30 miles away). So I've been arguing that we need to deal with (b) first, i.e. reduce our rate of traffic. Matt.

Wasn't that the router, 30 miles further, in a 'SERVER-Closet'?
Isn't the problemematic router on the Campus.
Anotherthing, SETI@home has a crazy high bandwith use, 24 hours a day,
365 days a year.

I see some people saying they are leaving the program. Why?

I run two programs. Seti and Rosetta. Typically at least one of them is up. when they are both working, Seti gets about 60% of my resources. But with Seti down, Rosetta is getting 100%.

Nothing I have to do to make it work.

Just keep on crunching.

Matt mentioned a "problem" router, down at the PAIX. Does anyone know the details of this router: what company made it, what model it is, what interfaces and how much memory it has? Without information there is no way to know what might be a possible replacement for it.

If it is a Cisco router then all of this info can be shown remotely with a "show version" command, for models that are based on the Cisco IOS.

Of course, right now the most critical thing is to start generating work again. So the router is secondary. But if the router info is available I hope someone will post it.

It would also be nice to be able to upload completed workunits before their expiry date.

I am among the seeming subset of users who haven't been able to sucessfully connect to upload for some days.
