Having sat back and thought on Gordon Thompson's act firing the 150+ year old furniture store. During which the sparks spread to residential property and burnt them out as well. During the latter fire several people had to jump from first floor apartments or die by fire.

He clearly did not premeditate arson when he got up that morning, but clear evidence was presented during the riots that he premeditated the arson of that store.

So - when does the act of premeditation actually take place? Or - from what point in the day can a case of premeditation be judged to be in place?

I still think the result of his actions should be the basis of the punishment, and that he should not serve all jail time concurrently. An exception should be made in his case.

Who knows, maybe there will be riots if he gets less than 10 years, and riots if he gets more than 20 years......

Judge Peter Thornton QC said Thompson would receive a lengthy sentence. We will know on 11 April.

He got 11 -1/2 years, which is maybe more than most people were expecting.

Even with remission for good behavious this 42 year old rioter/arsonist will not see his children grow up and punish the family as well.

The sentence waas appropriate for the crime.

Someone will have to pay for the damage and the cost of keeping the rioters so that has to come from the people some how.what a waste of resources that could have help many people in there own area.no winners and nothing gained by there actions

One problem with whacko Joe -- while he has focused on his foolishness, his office has ignored hundreds of sexual abuse cases that fall under the responsibility of his office. Turns out that wife beating, sex with minors, and child abuse apparently don't bother him.

He is much more focused on checking the papers of every hispanic looking person he runs across.

The thing is, he's not 'law and order' -- he is political pandering. And he is Very good at that.

The good news, if you send enough folks off to jail, you reduce the number of unemployed...

And no, I'm NOT arguing for leniency here.

With most of the rioters being NEETs (Not Employed, or in Education or Training) is there a case for bringing back some form of National Service, I'm not saying this has to be in the Armed forces, but take them away from home, and their often unheathy environment, and train them for work in jobs that benefit society. So that they meet people from othe area's, forge friendships and trust rather than suspicion and animosity.

Or reversing the policy on pensions, I saw this piece in the Telegraph last week, Only one in three pensioners stop work at retirement age, which means that there are ~400,000 people not leaving the work place and leaving spaces for younger people, each year.
