A month of shutdown Three new servers Still problems (AT THE source) I love seti and everyone there but enough is enough The old grip was outdated equipment What's the EXCUSE now I predicted that new equipment would not solve the problems... well here we are new servers and still problems |

To me it doesn't matter. This search may take thousands of years. A little down time is in the noise floor. What does matter is that we are a part of this search. After all, we partially know where ET isn't, or at least what time and direction we didn't receive a signal from. Fix one problem, a new one shows up, we fix that. My house and my job are the same way. I fix one thing, and another shows up. Steve Warning, addicted to SETI crunching! Crunching as a member of GPU Users Group. GPUUG Website |

Robert, while I share you sentiment I don't share the logic your using to deduce it. As for the actual server problems we were having the issues seem to me solved with the two new servers. And the issue that came up with the hard drives on the latest 'outage' are being dealt with with the new Synergy that was graciously donated. Keep in mind this 'outage' happened during the scheduled downtime. Not to mention it merely pushed the outdated equipment it was replacing out quicker. So all this was going to happen anyways just not on this time schedule. With all that being considered, I think things have been working pretty good. I've got plenty of work, things are uploading, and nothing is staying down for long. In computers you will never have a miracle cure as there is always old parts that are bound to fail, or new parts with unknown points of failure. It's just part of the cycle. Good example, I moved my old video card into my new server, heck it's always been reliable. Had quite a time getting it working without error but got it working! It chugged along for about 2-3 weeks happily spitting out work, but last night it decided to go bad, luckily I caught it before it went over 50 errored units and removed it from the machine. After some testing it seems my 'ole 8800GTS's memory has decided to just quit working. Sucks, but it lived a good life. Thank goodness for BoincTasks! In computers there is only two things that are certain.....there will always be some sort of issue no matter how big or small, and it will cost you time or money or both to get it fixed. Well it seems that Bruno died. Has nothing to do with the 3 new servers now does it? Also seems like Synergy Is more than pulling its wieght, even though it wasnt designed to do what it is doing. You are the kind of guy that if you were given a million dollars youd whine and cry that you have to pay taxes on it. Give it a rest.
Old James |

Matt stated that there would about 8 weeks of intermittant "things" as the new servers were "cooked in." If you are refering to The old machine had issues and synergy was pressed into serivce before they were ready, that fits with Matts previous stement in the Tech News. Because many things are spread out across an Network File System (NFS) and scripts were writtien for various machines and tweaked to Max and they are suddenly moved to a new machine... Can you expect something to happen such as the RFI noise blanking to hicckup.. To this point things have not been too terrible. Most users have enough work to keep them going until the problem is solved. Uploads are running downloads well there are still a few WU's to get for the weekend. If nothing else get out and have a bit of Fun while you are waiting for the Sky to Fall.. Regards Please consider a Donation to the Seti Project. |

Yet, and not to pick sides per se, we learn just now that we will run out of wu's because of a new bug in the software that appeared seemingly out of the blue (see main page, regarding ntpker). Any failure is a disappointment. What is interesting is that most of the complaints over the years have been hardware related; but now that there is a quantum improvement in hardware, we start to see software issues. (I usually classify OS issues in the hardware failure bin.) |

There will always be "what next?" and there will always be problems. Why? If BOINC projects were well funded, they could have redundant-everything, multiple connections to the 'net, 24 hour staff, etc. Or they could just buy a really big computer and do it all themselves. That isn't what BOINC is for. BOINC is for projects with vanishingly small budgets. BOINC is designed with the assumption that things break and staff isn't always on the spot to fix it. When SETI@Home has a failure, my computer keeps crunching. Is BOINC perfect? No. It is affordable. |

I simply don't know where the proverbial Problem, is?! OK, new hardware (SERVERs), have to get intergrated in the 'system' and configurated, probably also 'tweaked'. But where is your 'Problem', I can't find it, everything runs smooth, still got enough work, throughput of WU's, has never been higher on my hosts, as has my (average) credit....................??? And to your question:What Next?, well simply, start/keep on crunching ;^), there's still work, but nothing is Split, a.t.m. so that's not good. You start to sound like a Prophet of Doom................ or Murphy ;-) |

I thought people out grew this. I remember as a teen always being gloomy about things. Nothing good could happen, if it was sunny then its probably going to be hot/rain or something awful. then I found out about women. After a bit of trial and many errors I discovered they usually didn't care for that kind of talk. Not surprisingly I changed my attitude and not surprising women find me quite appealing now. and not because I'm a banana. I'm not saying find a woman but find something that you can make happy if you are too. Perhaps a puppy or a kitten. Mark could probably help out there. I really don't think that the admins intent is to mess things up and the hardware/software problems will work themselves out. to quote one of my favorite movies I learned a long time ago there's no sense getting all riled up every time a bunch of idiots give you a hard time. Robert, feel free to click this link http://boinc.berkeley.edu/projects.php you may also feel free to choose a new project and complain as freely on that board as you do on this board. |

There must be a hiccup going on as Robert is back. :D No problems here mate, I'm OK for a week or so before the backup projects get called upon but they'll likely have it running again before then. ;) Cheers. |

Hiya Mark, Your ears must have been burning. I'd like to hear from the OP (Robert) how Australian optimism and a sense of community in tough times is off-topic, to working together to get things running. Anti-Australian sentiments expressed by moderators neverwithstanding. Given that we have five states here digging themselves out of mud, I think we can handle a small debate on the short-funding situation at Berkeley, and how the new hardware has helped but there is more work to do for all of us. Well, one day I want to visit Australia, if not for your famous Australian humour, but for your funny English accent :-). I would have visited long time ago, if it were for the fact that it's so awfully long flight times from Sweden to Australia. But one day, I will go down under for sure. It's a Big country :) Plan well and you could have a ball :D. If you come for a holiday, don't be surprised if you end up wanting to stay. You could easily end up not liking the place if you're not accustomed to isolation though ;) Jason "Living by the wisdom of computer science doesn't sound so bad after all. Hiya Mark, You mean he hasnt E-mailed you? He has E-mailed me twice. You must have really ticked him off. Your about as welcome on this thread as a salt water croc at a beach party.:) Just kidding, He didnt like my (snide) remarks up above either.
Old James |

Your about as welcome on this thread as a salt water croc at a beach party.:) Look, Continuing to spam Robert's thread of (valid?) concerns questioning the project viability, with actual optimism, is apparently out of the posting rules and pandering to provocation by heavy handed figureheads of authority. I won't bother forming a counter argument. I certainly have some concerns about the project viability I didn't have before.
