Winning before taking a train ride with my son's class. Amtrak from Santa Barbara to Oxnard. Two points to anyone who knows the meaning of Oxnard.

Just keeping this spot warm.

Really?

Anyway, it is freezing around here.

No wonder My calf muscles in My legs were hurting last night.

No one around here is used to ice. I saw 5 accidents yesterday evening and the remains of 4 additional ones this morning (on the same set of roads).

Don't feel bad John, Most in Southern California are barely used to rain and don't know how to drive in It as they lack the proper training.

Replace "Southern Cal" with "most of UK" and "rain" with "snow" and we're on the same track.

That said - for all the rain we get, there are idiots that can't drive in that here either!!!

Some Americans do know how to drive better than other Americans, I don't know If I'd pass the German DMV Test, But here in 1979 on the written score I got 99 out of 100 and yes I aced My Driving test in a big car on some very tight(for the USA) streets down in San Pedro CA. Most people when they change lanes or make a right turn or sometimes a left turn fail to use the signals(Turn Signals/Lane Change Signals) that are built in as their supposed to... Or worse they don't look over their shoulder or into the lane they want to move into and the lane has someone there already... I had that happen to Me once while on a Motorcycle and I had to put the bike in Neutral to rev the motor as the stock horns were weak and only good in and around town. But I got the drivers attention and I looked Her in the eye too.

As Andy says - give some snow and ice in the UK and there are accidents galore. Most people cannot drive in those conditions. But it is great fun for those that can getting those that cannot to follow them into a field (roads not visible), then watch them trying to extract themselves (great laugh).

I am pleased to help stranded motorists that get in to difficult, usually due to lack of skills/experience and get in to difficulty. But, when I actively see the other type and they then get in to difficulty then I watch from a distance to see how they deal with their self imposed problem.

4 wheel drive just means that you get stuck farther from civilization.

It started to snow on the way back from Salisbury today and suddenly the overall traffic speed on the M3 dropped by 30mph, bit like the average drivers IQ.

Bernie.

Ah, the M3....full of idiots in Range Rovers or, worse still, 'clowns' in 'fashionable' (usually small) cars, who drive 6" off your rear bumper at 70 mph, flashing their headlights - usually a BMW 3 series. I love driving in snow, as I learned how to do so, over the space of two skiing seasons, working in the Italian Alps. I have to admit that I'm hoping things are OK for the weekend, as I'm driving down to Devon to see my family before Christmas. All it takes to ruin things are a bunch of idiots who have no clue how to drive in adverse conditions. Just don't get me started on the average Essex driver!

In the States and Canada with large distances, yes. Especially as the weather, when it happens, dumps much deeper snow than it is traditional for the Gulf Stream warmed British Isles.

Not in even rural UK, unless snow drifting is 4' or above. The all terrain snow tyres and ground clearance in lo-4 x 4 will become defeated. Stay at home and let the others get stuck.

We might have to make a cross country dash to Yeovil from Lincolnshire, via Bristol, to pick up a hospitalised 35 year old niece on Sunday. The snow that is forecast will put some strain on the journey if it is deemed needed.

If the snow is that deep, a normal car won't make it out of the driveway. A 4WD might make it several miles before hitting a snowdrift big enough to stop it.

However, I do admit that I have gotten a jeep stuck in my own driveway once. I have also gotten stuck more than 20 miles from the nearest paved road. In both cases, the winch got me unstuck.

Lucky You, Me I have about a 1' tall tree, No I'm not getting It out this Year, If I'm able to I'll replace It with a 6-7' tree that's pre-lit with LED lights.

Of course right now Bones is on followed by more Bones.
