Hello evarybody,

I'm not sure this is the right place to post this kind of messages... In case, I'm sorry :)

Whit maximum respect of BoincView (at the moment I'm using it) I'm trying to develop an open source alternative. I'm coding it in C#.Net (so Windows only at the moment).
I think I will release an "alpha version" in a couple of weeks.

Suggestions are welcome. :)

Ciao
Jack

I stumbled across this thread via google

i'd be interested in the progress of this project, but firstly, have you tried talking to/asking seb (the BoincView developer) about making BV open source, or at least becomming a developer for it, in addition to himself?

BoincView's author makes his opinion on open source fairly explicit in the FAQ.

Hello Jck,

if I am right you will not have any problems with the author of BoincView, because you (hopefully) do not use or modify HIS code. You want to write your own piece of program.

After finishing YOUR program you might consider to say its open source or not.

... some suggestions...
In the past (seti classic times) there were some add-on programs (SetiHide, SetiQueue e.t.c.). Some of their functions I miss in the Boinc Manager. Distribution of WUs to other computers. I think this is possible, because the Boinc Manager uses this possibility if there is a multi processor and/or multi core system.
Even the simpliest sort mechanisms are missing in the standart Boinc Manager. Also you could not modify more then one WU in its status (from stopped to ready to calculate or something like this, I do not know the correct english terminology. )

Another more cosmetic point is the static width of the buttons on the left side.
I think in words or phrases in german are often longer than in english. But even in german up to 40% (a guess) of space is not used. And no way to give it to the right part, where more space is needed. (For me I have to uses 1280x1024 resolution to view all relevant data...)

I would be pround to be a tester for your program. :-)))

good luck

Bernd

Yes, I saw that, although that doesn't really help the situation. Espcially as Seb (the BV developer) isn't always receptive to ideas or suggesions, and seems that he's writen the application for his own use (and just happened to release it for public consumption) rather than designing it for what most users want.

that's also my interpretation of his intentions

Indeed there are many issues with the standard manager as well as 3rd party versions, I'm not saying it's perfect, far from it, but it seems that Rom is spending his time improving the way the BOINC core client actually works first (which is the sensible option).

I assume he'll look at cosmetic/manager/features etc. after the core client is stable. Or perhaps interface design isn't really his area, which is why the system is designed to allow 3rd party managers to control BOINC.
