The "staff" do not exist to serve and please you, jravin. We all made a conscious choice to participate in this experiement and we are certainly free to come and go as we like. Granted. But they don't exist to abuse us, either. Considering the breadth and scope of the changes made on the server side in the last week or so, a little info on it before implementation would have been nice (it only takes a couple of minutes to write a post), and some better testing would have been nice, too. Not asking for much, just a little professionalism, that's all. |

Not asking for much, just a little professionalism, that's all. The project is run by students who have been sheltered from the "real" world, where lack of professionalism would be met with a pink slip. |

No, they aren't paid to work weekends! |

True. But the lack of info and the screwups occurred BEFORE the weekend. |

The project is run by students who have been sheltered from the "real" world, where lack of professionalism would be met with a pink slip. Have you actually read the bios of the people who run the project? Have you read anything about the project, or do you just have your own goals and expectations? Can you show me one quote where they promise to always have WUs in the form you want, in the quantities you want? |

Not asking for much, just a little professionalism, that's all. No, they aren't paid to work weekends! That's the exact point that was made. I've worked weekends any number of times during my career, if that's what it took to get the job done. *That* is a sign of professionalism. |

Not asking for much, just a little professionalism, that's all. Me too. But honestly since I did not own the place, I did expect to get paid. Janice |

What some people fail to miss as a significant point here is that if Seti@Home was to be offline for an extended period of time no one would be negatively affected. No one person that volunteers their time should have the expectation that they are going to get something in return or to hold people to a higher level than themselves. Do you turn off your computer when you go to bed? Do you only run the project when the electric rates are lowest? Do you stock pile WU's and then format your hard drive when the OS gets infected? I work many weekends and late nights because I have a professional career that requires it - I sacrifice myself for my clients because they depend on me and my services. If I mess something up, people's work productivity and the ability to earn an income is affected. Professionalism is not in question here - do you want the problem fixed or do you want these overworked people to report to you that they know that there is a problem. The staff are more than dedicated to their undertaking without a doubt but no one is going to die if S@H goes on the fritz for a week. I can not believe that this conversation is really happening. When SETI started, we VOLUNTEERED to use computing time to help a scientific endeavor. The reward was that we knew that we were helping scientific research. That has not changed. We are NOT here for glory, reaching the top of the WU lists, etc. IMHO if you are here for glory or major recognition for WU's, then perhaps this is NOT the endeavor for you to work on. Could it be that the servers are out of diskspace? At least that's what Boinc is telling me... Can't upload any results... Rig name: "x6Crunchy" OS: Win 7 x64 MB: Asus M4N98TD EVO CPU: AMD X6 1055T 2.8(1,2v) GPU: 2x Asus GTX560ti Member of: Dutch Power Cows |

I personally still volunteered the computer time to help the science. But I did not volunteer my time and effort to alpha test software. Work units are just a guide to how effective the crunching is. Unless there is some catalog I can order our for frequent cruncher rewards. (thin humor) Done here.. back to moaning and complaining in number crunching. Janice |

You probably got well-paid for it too. These folks do it as a labor of love and are paid precious little if anything. These people work hard here and deserve their time off. If you are not satisfied with their efforts, nobody is stopping you from stepping up and helping out. I see a lot of bi**hing for number of green stars out there. I for one have stepped up and increased my donations. If these 2 million out there put up a dollar or so a year there would be a vast improvement. Don't sit back and whine. Step up and help out all the more if you truly believe in what they are trying to accompolish. |

I personally still volunteered the computer time to help the science. But I did not volunteer my time and effort to alpha test software. But how do you do cutting edge science without continually developing and testing new software? To me, that is an integral part of the science, and half the fun. It's not like I have to do hard labour or even think very much to help do this science. I just volunteer unused computer time, and then sit back and watch. Watching the graphs and the stats is fun, but it is not the prime purpose here. |

Like a bunch of disgruntled kids in kindergarten... arguing over who deserves the most cookies and juice. Sheesh.... I'm going back to playing with my Weebles. I DONATE money to SETI@home.... DO YOU? I'm just slowly BOINC'ing along. Hey... ET... you have a sister who likes earthlings? |

But how do you do cutting edge science without continually developing and testing new software? True. But that's what the Beta site is for. The probs we've been having with the new server-side stuff (VERY mjor changes) that were introduced on the Production site without any warning or info are very bad. The project IS very public, and should not be treated the way you would treat stuff written for yourself or a few pals/colleagues. |

Hi Sorry if I post something stupid, but is there a problem with Seti@Home servers. My account stood still for 3 days now. I had a lot of work done, but get no update to my credits. There is also a lot of work waiting to be uploaded, but "Uploading pending (Project Backoff)" is the message I get. Thanks |

Hi Johan, Just read back a few days in this thread and you will get your answer. They have had a problem with the servers for around a week or more now. They tried a fix that broke it even more so we are waiting for the guys at Berkeley to get in to work and see what they can do to get us going again. Oh, when reading back, just try to ignore all the rude comments. When there are server problems people get a bit peevish in here. PROUD MEMBER OF Team Starfire World BOINC |

Beta can only go so far, with so many different user setups. Eventually you have to go to a broader base. That was always implicitly part of what we volunteered for. Also, I like to think of everybody here as pals and colleagues. That is the fun part of volunteering. |

I volunteered my extra space to help find little green men. I'm not a scientist or a computer genius. I just run the program and let them do with it as they wish. For almost 8 years now, I've done this and it has worked out ok so far. We've all seen these hiccups come and go over the years and things have worked out fine so far. Remember the screams when people were told they had to run BOINC if they wanted to keep running SAH? It's great when Matt or Eric or one of the other guys post something but I don't expect them to drop everything just to keep us up to date on things we can see already by the way the program is running. We know there is a problem, we pretty much know what caused it, we know the guys will do everything they can to get it fixed. Why do we need to have them take time out of both their work time and their personal time to tell us what we already know? PROUD MEMBER OF Team Starfire World BOINC |
