This is a pretty cool site. The Global Rich List You enter your annual income and it tells you where you stand to the rest of the world. It also gives you some idea about things you could do with some of your wealth.

I am the 31,560,0000th richest person in the world. That puts me in the top 0.53%

Makes me want to go out and splurge on a cup of coffee.

I feel like I'm on the top of the food chain!

I'm the 49,847,130 richest person in the world! I'm at the TOP 0.83%
richest people in the world!

Of course that's if I add my wife's income. She deals drugs at WalMart.

Now they want me to donate! Here's my donation!

Well, that was embarrassing. I put my income in there and they insisted on donating money to me. :/

I am in so much debt, that this doesn't make sense. I have one huge advantage. My father owns my house with no mortgage, and I am buying it month by month with no interest. If I miss a payment, then no big deal. That is the only way I am able to survive with all I owe.

Income is related to how rich you are (especially your potential to be rich), but most people think of wealth in terms of how much you have in assets. I guess after the market meltdown in 2008, there are many who don't feel very rich at all. Since this site is encouraging charitable gifts, the safer yardstick for the website to use would be income, unless you've been without an income for the last two years.

You're in the TOP 13.28% richest people in the world!

The site is also including the very large number of people in very poor countries that live on a few dollars (like < $20) per year. That makes all but some of the homeless wealthier than 80% of the worlds population.

Rather than before tax take home income, why not key in your actual tax paid average income. I suspect your not as rich as you think, despite all the hunter gatherer have-no-fixed-home numbers.

Very valid point. Knocks me right down when I put the take home figure in.

IMHO, its all just a number game. We need to do something like looking at after tax income, after fixed expenses like minimum food, clothing, shelter and health care, and then converting left over money into something tangible - like how many pounds of good quality steel you could buy per day, delivered to where you are located. (You may not actually need any good quality steel, but it would be a meaningful comparative indication of purchasing power, corrected for your local circumstances.)

To put it another way, $50,000 per year is a decent amount if you live on and own a productive farm near a mid sized town in Canada (and qualify for local health care), but its hardly anything if you are renting in downtown Tokyo, depend on prescription drugs, and don't have health insurance. A well fed healthy hunter gatherer who sells a few pelts might be just as rich as you or me.

Years ago I saw a list of how long a person had to work to buy one days worth of food, broken down by country. Ranged from a few minutes in North America to all day in large parts of the world. I think that was much more meaningful.

My kids were shocked to discover their allowance made them rich. Once they recovered, I sent them out to mow the lawn. :)
