Hi all--

I know the project is desperate for cash (as the former Donations coordinator) but I received a third email stating the need for cash.

3 emails are--in my belief--total overkill.

For the record I gave recently, but choose to hide my star.

Twice was enough friends.

I gues that is why I didn't get one. It must have been forwarded to you instead.

I'm sorry... but I do hate to state this, but, does it really matter?
To me, if it doesn't affect anyone with major disastrous consequences, why bring this specific topic up?

S@H does very well with what charity they receive... Matt/Eric thought it was a good idea to send out a third email, so they did.

... and even though I have two accounts, with two different E-Mail addresses, on two different servers, I have not received any of the messages.

I'd look in the logs, but I'd need to know when my copies were attempted.

Blurf

After having some lost in SPAM filters in the past, it nice to hear that they are getting through. It means Matt's and other efforts are finally starting to payoff. Applause.

Yes, I also have received 3. I have also seen, very old users starting to return.

It is sad that our Major Sponsor (Sir Arthur Clarke) is no longer with us which carried more weight, than the current set of emails. So what do you do when you have no one famous to ask for help. You do what you can do. Nothing more nothing less. It does not mean the cause is not worthy, it is still for each to decide.

I have not looked that the Donations page lately. For a couple of years that was a daily event in my life, then You took it over. Together we and Seti Users have made some small impact to keep the Seti project going.

Thank You, for your efforts.

The torch has been passed on once again.

Regards

Me neither, but then I have set Is it OK for Seti@Home and your team (if any) to email you? to No in my preferences.

So far for the month of December, I see donations as:

Donations to SETI@home in December 2009:
Number of Donations: 1138
Total Donations: $ 56577.60
Smallest Donation: $ 10.00
Largest Donation: $ 1000.00
Average Donation: $ 49.72
Median Donation: $ 25.00
Donation Rate (per day): $ 1927.65
% of Volunteers that have Donated: 0.10%

Pretty nice numbers. Before the emails went out for donations, there was a total of $2646 which means almost $54,000 dollars has come in since the emails went out.

I see no problem with receiving donation requests.

They get people involved and the emails are not going to hurt anyone.

I got three EMails of SETI@home:
1st, 12/11/09 - A year-end update from SETI@home
2nd, 12/17/09 - SETI@home is reconnecting people to science
3rd, 12/29/09 - The SETI@home community

No prob for me. My EMail account can collect more.. ;-)

All with .html attachment.
Why not in normal EMail style?

Maybe the people are confused, because they don't like to open attachment?

From my experiences.., if you ask too much - you don't get.

If someone missed the EMails..

In the current news on the first side.. [http://setiathome.berkeley.edu]

We started sending out our annual year-end donation drive mass e-mail. The process could take days. If you didn't get one (possibly due to spam blocking), you can read the same letter on-line here . Thank you!!! 10 Dec 2009 0:00:00 UTC · Comment

Was the one I got from the Nigerian banker needing help donating to seti count?

Only joking... Got all three letters and will donate when I have the funds. Can I send just one donation or do you want one for each request? ;_)

Grin.... :))

It all depends on if we are using the New Math or old math or not.

In algebra it can be proven that 1 + 1 = 3, so to combine the checks you need to use the correct math. So if you had planned to send a $1000 Certified Check for each email and you work through all the purtibations for all three, it would mean you that you could send a single Certified Check for $9000

Three checks 1, 2, 3 would look like

1,2=3000
2,3=3000
3,1=3000

Which adds to 9000, Simple HUH... AND it is scaleable...

Seriously, Seti "never" expects anyone to send more than they can afford.

So while Blurf did not intend to start a donation drive in the Forums. He did state the facts. The first was there have been 3 emails sent by different people, included in each email was information that Seti needs Your Help.

For Myself, I tended to like the last one from Eric stating "We are a Community" we all live in different parts of the world and have a common goal. Find ET! To get to that goal has costs, some are the computers you buy, the electricity to run them and last but not least the money to keep the Seti Doors open. So it becomes a combined effort. WE do what WE CAN, When We Can!

Regards

If you look at the SETI@home Donation History in December 2009 page, each of the emails has triggered a burst of donations.

Yeah, thats what I was pointing out as well. Since the email surge, the money has come in, over $54,000 donated since the 10th. Obviously they need more, but heck, that's a good chunk of money to help out.

I don't see the problem here. I also received 3 emails from S@H spaced over a period of weeks. If it can help the project, then I am all for it. I get 5 emails a day from people wishing to sell me Viagra. That I find slightly more annoying.

Hi, I did get 3 E-Mail's, 2 marked as 'spam', so I put SETI on the 'White-List'.

Still 'recovering'from last years disasters, but a 'bit' is better then
nothing . . .

Best wishes and a healthy 2010, to the STAFF and SETI- community.
