So this statement by him is a bunch of bunk... OK...I can accept that. "Time is simply the mechanism that keeps everything from happening all at once." |

. . . the actual reference i am making - in terms of NEZ's quote is referred to [in the BOLDED sentence above] it's rather 'Obvious' that he never Posted . . . < back to what i am querying: what's a smoke screen . . . ? Disclaimer: 'Media' says 'They' are "quoting" [see this NEWS link] - so did he actually say this and what's he 'mean by that which he is quoted as stating? BOINC Wiki . . . Smoke screens hide something you don't want others to know about, like a ship in in a naval encounter. If NEZ said this, he might mean the higher-ups are saying SETI@home is the (main) reason to fire him, but it really just obscures the true reason--ostensibly nepotism. |

... If he actually made the statement. Given the reporting to date, i'd take any reports of either side of the issue with much larger than usual grains of salt. Grant Darwin NT |

That depends on what your definition of IS is. me@rescam.org |

I wonder whether the Second NEZ account, #1 at SETI Beta since 2007-07-26, is the same person or a copycat? (different CPID from the one we're discussing here). Same person. I'll make a guess that the email addr used for his acct on this project has been changed. me@rescam.org |

Given the reporting to date, i'd take any reports of either side of the issue with much larger than usual grains of salt. Spot on. You've got 3 parties (the school, the press, & Nez) positioning for public appearances & agendas, none of which are too incentivized to get it 100% correct, and even if they were, the press might not be capable of grepping the devil in the details. And when dealing with technical content, a deviation of just 1% makes a whole lot of difference :-) School environments must suck -- the virus laden game playing students are only surpassed in danger by the virus laden pontificating faculty. But the lockdown & control stuff (DMTF) is pretty good at managing and logging everything. When asked to remove something, why set up a policy to disable? Sure, 200000 wu's will get to timeout, but I for one wouldn't risk my job over it ... or at minimum set the task queue to zero days and justify conducting the REMOVE in an orderly fashion 2 Sunday's later off the District's clock. There is no reason to halt your clean-up at a mere disable unless you intend to re-activate later. But there are larger issues at play. Perhaps Nez meant that S@H was a 'red herring' instead of 'smoke screen' in that regard. Perhaps the police report when it becomes available will give a better picture of what went down. Those usually take 3 or 4 months to complete & file (of which 2 months has already ticked by). Anybody got $5? http://www.ci.gilbert.az.us/police/records.cfm (left as a non-click on purpose) |

Seems several people here are ready to hang Nez on the nearest tree. This was actually my thoughts too when reading some of the posts in this thread. Thanks to Qui-Gon for pointing out some of the legal aspects in this case. That there is no case at all except for one made up by some who want to cover the real reason, nepotism. That's how I read the statements and the facts given to us by the news articles. "I'm trying to maintain a shred of dignity in this world." - Me |
