BOINC/SETI runs just fine in Win7. I have it running in an XP box and it runs as good as VISA on a much more powerful computer. The only reason to upgrade from Vista to Win7 would be use fewer resources, which Win7 seems to do. Win7 has a smaller footprint than Vista which is why it runs fine in a Netbook, while Vista does not.

Hey Everyone,

I have it running on both Vista x64 and Ubuntu 9.04 x64.

No kidding, I get almost a full 25% higher benchmarks day in and day out in Ubuntu.

Basically, my AMD 940 BE either:

a.)think of it as really 4 cores when in Vista at 3.6 Ghz getting me 2900/8900 give or take versus
b.)think of Ubuntu as 5 plus cores same chip and speed...getting 3500/11500 ...nothing is different

Now if you could get the Linux Client to work when you want it to, I'd think it was perfect (ie. mines constantly on, can't really turn it off - I'm forced to change cores/percentages versus time of execution).

If you look at my computers (See my account, click my computers, click details - scores are there), both should show - and the scores should be there...see for yourself.

Did I say this is repeatable day in and out? It is. So, depending on my other computing needs decides what OS I use. I leave Ubuntu rocking overnight though at 3.6 (most stable)....

SETI@ home Enhanced and Enigma is what I run....

Still waiting on an Astropulse that works with my AMD's. Both Phenoms I and II did not like 5.03. Period. I gave it a try way later and it still didn't work. I will not waste more time on those.

Would love to work on Astopulses...however - I am in the top 100 crunchers a lot of nights on Enigma because I'm only dedicating 2 of the 4 cores to Seti. I'd gladly switch to all 4 to SETI if Astrolpulse worked for me.

Another interesting thing is to see how the benchies change depending on how many cores you're dedicating. I've found that when I use 2-3 cores of the 4 at 100% - I yield higher results than if you use 1 or 4 of 4 cores. (If 1 = 100% if 4=95%). I can understand the 4 cores - but the 1 boggles my mind. Either way, that's what I've noticed. And no - I don't chart it...sorry. This holds true for both Vista AND Ubuntu...have not seen differences between the two OS's there (and I did look since I noticed it in Vista).

Hope you all find this helpful!

What am I suppose to do with my external 8" floppy drive? :(

:-)

It's been a long time since I had a cp/m(zcpr) box around here (Kaypro).

I do have a modern copy of "ladder" though, looks/plays just like the original.

When you say they "didn't work for you", do you mean you received errors? Did the apps crash? Were they taking too long? Couldn't download the app?

I'm just trying to clarify because AP has been known to work on many AMD CPUs just fine, but they are slower than Intel chips with the stock application.

the exact opposite was true for me. i tried running ubuntu as well as other flavours of linux and my athlon consistently scored lower rac on any version of linux. in fact it was so slow that optamized seti on linux was SLOWER then un-optamized seti on windows xp.

AP 5.03 optimized worked perfectly on my Opteron 1210 running SuSE Linux 10.3. Now I am waiting for the optimized version of AP 5.05. MB Optimized also works perfectly and I have 4 WUs trying to upload plus 1 running.

Same here, waiting on AP 5.05... I'm running Ubuntu 8.10 64bit with 2x GTX 260 (only using 1 atm until I fix the heat issue in my case... next day off). With 6.6.36 worked for me, so I could get the CPUs crunching away too!

I've been told that 6.6.36 works with Ubuntu. I had to go back to 6.6.31, which claims to be 6.6.29. I only have problems with CPDN Beta but I am not the only one.

I heard the same thing about 6.6.36, but after I installed it it wouldn't work. It couldn't find the SETI project, and hitting attach to project produced nothing.

Not sure where they came from, but I ended up Chasing Ghosts, Beyond the Arcade, out towards the Twin Galaxies! :-)

I don't understand why Windows 7 is so great.....and everyone is in such a hurry to jump-ship from Vista in favour of it.

I love Vista x64.

for me it is actually just getting it so we can start testing our drivers at work and get things certified. Personally I don't care for Vista or Win7. I only use Vista at home for the DX 10.1 support.

Any news on Win7? It wasn't released last week as hoped.

I bitched at our MS guy that went to the conf last week about getting everyone hopes up. He said they were not given any info about when it would be released.

However there was a small posting about it here. That you might be interested in. :)
