Message 910401 - Posted: 23 Jun 2009, 11:03:21 UTC - in response to Message 910395.

Hi Mike. Life treating you well?

I´m doing very fine Andy.
I´m on holidays.
How is it on your end.
I was planning to fly to London last sunday but it failed.

Good morning to you as well Shannock.

Might be just as well. Seems flying is getting more dangerous these days. :-)

Having the Pilot die in flight is not as dangerous as it seems. Both the pilot and co-pilot are perfectly capable of flying the plane to the destination. In the case quoted, there was a relief pilot as well to ensure that everyone was rested during the landing. Did having the pilot die during the flight cut some of the safety margin? Yes. Did it substantially increase risk? No. Has it happened before? Yes. In the past 15 years, there have been 6 pilots that have died in flight while flying commercial jets. All of these landed safely, and in most of the cases, the passengers never knew.

Is flying getting more dangerous? Possibly, but it would be because the air carriers are cutting safety margins everywhere to save money.

Exactly the point. Cutting corners means cutting safety in situations like that. Having something like that happen doesn't make me any less likely to fly, but for that particular pilot to have passed a physical prior to flying has to make you wonder who's running the tests... ;-)

Speaking of time travellers, just got back from the square dance club - that stuff has moved on a lot in the 30 years we were away, all sorts of new figures to learn. We shall have to get some lessons, real quick.

And again speaking of time travel, when you do get stuck back in time remember to bring this nifty t-shirt lol :)

Hello Mumps, John, Ulrik, James.

Going back to the pilot mortality thing, I seem to recall there was once a rule that both pilots could not eat the on-board meals (so they wouldn't both get food poisoning at the same time). Never understood what the other guy was supposed to do - starve? Bring sandwiches?

Robin Hood my favorite movie. In for a win before work.

If only we could skip the work part...

You can occasionally skip work.

Don't tell my wife that!

It's called Vacation.

The place she was cleaning at was closed on Good Friday. She has no key to go in on days the place is closed. Regardless, her boss wrote her up for not showing up that day. (Her boss does not work at the same location my wife does.) They're closed all next week as well. Her boss said she would have to show up, even though she can't get inside to do her work anyways, or she would write her up again. She didn't provide any suggestions on what she expected her to be doing for 4 hours in a parking lot. So she quit. :-)

The intelligence of some people amazes me sometimes...

Good luck on her finding another job...
