Nope, CUDA is an Nvidia only item.

I expect many threads about people who cant figure out how to install the Cuda drivers and get this setup properly.

then the people whining about GPU users having some obnoxious credit increases..

I look forward to the madness

I see that the peg for the Press Release is the release of the SETI application today.

Yet they have quotes from David Anderson (speaking for BOINC), Gianni De Fabritiis (GPUGRID), and Bruce Allen (Einstein). No project scientist from SETI, not even Dan Werthimer who signed the fundraiser.

Seems to me that it's more of a BOINC press release than a SETI@Home press release.

Shortly after you go and buy a new graphics card ;-)

I'm waiting untill the dust settles and will then probably go and buy a couple of cheapo 8 Series graphics cards to experiment with.

I'm thinking that putting an 8600 based PCI card in an old P4 would turn an old doorstop into a usefull cruncher?

It's not going to keep up with a box that has 2 x GTX280s of course, but I'll still have $1,000 left in my pocket ;-)

I'm looking at some 9500 cards that are still less than $100 for my old P4

BTW.

Today.. 17 Dec 2008 16:54:42 UTC

New Version of SETI@home.. V6.05 for Windows/x86

http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/apps.php

So what's new in this Version?

It's the new CUDA-app?

BTW.#2

I can insert a new entry [605] in my app_info.xml for AK v8.0 SSSE3x ?

All AK v8.0 are well for 6.05 ?

And for my old AMD.. 2.4V MMX is well also for 6.05 ?

You need a PCI Express slot to be able to do CUDA AFAIK

I know most of the supported chips come on the modern PCI-E cards, but I see 8000 series chips available for old school PCI. Is there a specific reason the CUDA drivers wont work with the chip in that situation?

Thats one of the reasons I'm waiting for the dust to settle, let someone else try it first :-)

No, there isn't, it just needs a GPU that's on the CUDA 2.0 list. The only downside is that PCI is very slow when it comes to transferring data around, while it may have problems with memory on the card above 128MB. Minimum of CUDA is 256MB. Watch out as some of the PCI cards come with passive cooling, meaning you need extremely good cooling in the case.

So did they change the priority issue so that someone with a dual core can run 2 + 1 with the GPU client with out stalling out the GPU client?

Also does anyone know how to update the xml file so it will use the optimized clients for the cores not running the GPU client?

Thanks, thats what I was wondering.

Obviously if I'm messing about with an old P4 then maximum performance isn't really the issue, just wondering if it's going to boost the old dinosaur's RAC enough to be worth the $NZ100 for the card. The card I'm looking at has 256mb and a cooling fan, and extra case fans are easy to fit.

I see it says it's a pci card but it looks like a pci express card by the slot i'm seeing, but I could be wrong. I'm on a laptop so maybe it's just the small screen I'm looking at.

Pretty sure it's a low profile PCI card, thats what the specs say anyway.

One notch at the end of the card (where the gold teeth are) = PCI.
PCI slot has the notch away from the side of the motherboard.

PCIe can have only one notch, but then it's on the slot towards the middle of the motherboard.
