Try adding:
208.68.240.18 boinc2.ssl.berkeley.edu
to your hosts file, log off/on and restart the client. This worked for me.

Simpler:
1. retry communications, so client wish to download
2. killall -TERM boinc
3. ping boinc2.ssl.berkeley.edu
repeat until it returnx x.x.x.13 (we need x.x.x.18)
4. start boinc script again

for ping, my linux box is alternating between x.x.x.13/18.
If not, /etc/hosts is to be checjed.

I was curious, so I tried your suggestion on my Win Vista box (which is having NO problems with communications).

When I repeatedly ping boinc2.ssl.berkeley.edu it resolves to .13 every time and fails. Pinging .18 is, of course, successful. And yet, as I said, no comms problems here.

Hi Petros,

The file is named "hosts" and is in your /root/etc directory. Edit it as Admin and add that line. If you add it at the end of the file be sure to hit Enter, I've heard that a missing CR/LF *may* cause it to not work. (not sure about that but it can't hurt.)

Log off and on for the system to read the file; there may be another way to do that but it works for me.

Luck!

Glad to help!

As an after-thought, Matt will probably fix this tomorrow. After he does you'll probably want to return things to normal by removing that line, or better still, comment it out with a pound sign. "#" This has happened before and may again. With the line still there it will be a snap to patch in the future.

There appears to be a a fair amount of incoming & outgoing traffic, but there's something definately screwy somewhere.
I had a whole bunch of results to upload, and new work allocated to download, but it was timing out after less than a second. (:http error)
Then as i started to type this out, it all went through- but the latest batch of downloads lined up are now all timing out in less than a second.

Then you have the BOINC client messages --

11/19/2008 3:36:19 PM||Access to reference site succeeded - project servers may be temporarily down.

Which is rather inaccurate, it isn't that the servers are temporarily down, rather that they are permanently spotty.

I dropped out of Seti a couple of weeks ago when everyday or two an uploaded result got "lost" and was listed as an eventual "timeout" in my result listings.
It was never an AP result but I found this rather disturbing.

As long as the HTTP errors don't cause DownLoad errors ;)

Normally a result can't be lost.

You had 'validate errors' in your overview?
Or how was it named?

Or it came back after deadline?

Or which problem?

If this WU is one of the ones you're talking about, could you please go into the stdoutdae.txt file in the BOINC folder and get the info in the log for when this task was downloaded, and uploaded, as well as any info that may have a bearing on that task.

I have a feeling this was a "ghost" that never really made it to your system because of a connection failure. If it is a ghost you'll notice around the time this task was supposed to be downloaded that BOINC reported a connection failure or something along those lines with no record of the task.

Just in case you don't get to it before it gets deleted the info to make a search of the log file with
Name 20au08ag.4001.96811.12.8.35_2 (this is the task id)

I think you are correct...at that time the message indicated the server was down for maintenance and that ID is not found anywhere in the log. Thank You

Every Tuesday between ~ 18:00 - 22:00 UTC the servers are down for maintenance.
But you don't need to be afraid.. no WU/result will be lost.. the upload work in this time.. only the report will be little later..

Downloads appear to be down, then up, then down. I'm on dialup and it's a bit tough to get work through. Hopefully it will be working well again very soon.
