Message 808568 - Posted: 15 Sep 2008, 17:04:36 UTC

There seems to be a pervasive thought that, for a variety of reasons, only certain opinions are "allowed" or "welcome."

I've certainly expressed my opinion, and certainly read many opinions from others, some I agree with, and some where I disagree.

I'd like to appeal to everyone to keep in mind that opinions are first and foremost opinions, and that all opinions are worthy of discussion.

What bothers me is the "what do I have to do to express an opinion?" question.

The answer: you have to be ready for someone to disagree -- because if you have an opinion, the odds are really good that others have opinions too.

If you want to express an opinion, someone else is going to want to express theirs.

I would hope that we're all intelligent enough to recognize that we can disagree and still respect the other persons' position.

I would hope that when we express an opinion, that we're ready to defend it with logical arguments, with reasons for those opinions. I know defending my positions over (too many) years has often helped to find the best answer.

If you can't see the good in what someone says, look beyond and see that their goal is to improve SETI@Home, and to help move the project forward.

Lots of smart people here, and certainly a lot of folks who are very committed. It's all good folks.

Discussion is good. Fire away!

Would you care to defend that position? :-)

All silliness aside (and I'm all for silly) I do hope we can show a little respect for others, even when we disagree.

... and work more toward discussing the ideas, and not going after the people who support either side.

EXACTLY Ned!

Throw in some silliness, but for heaven's sake, RESPECT the other cruncher! My little vegetable garden is not, nor will it ever be able to compete in any way with most of you...... BUT I DO WHAT I CAN. Does it make a FARM bad? NO. I started out with one box on Classic and have managed to work up to a garden.

In no way does anyone's OPINION affect anyone else.

Might I try to argue a point? SURE..... but I will never disrespect an opposing viewpoint, nor should anyone else!

We are all here for the same reasons, either to get credits or "for the science" or some combination thereof. The fact still remains, that if we are crunching for SETI, it is because we WANT to. No one is holding a gun to anyone's head and making them choose this project or any other.

Can I just check, please? Is this the 5 minute argument, or the full half-hour?

I'm all for Silly, But that's what I think of most surgeons and their handling of fully disabled Medi-Cal patients that live a long ways away(2 hours or so) and can't get surgery(an Abdominoplasty[Tummy Tuck] and a Thigh Lift) to cure a recurring yeast(red rash) infection even though(wrong county and too far) as they'll accept patients that have insurance that are 2 hours or so away and can get transportation to and from the Doctors/Surgeons office just not Medi-Cal patients from that far away(They will accept Medi-Cal patients within a 1/2 hours travel of Long Beach CA only(That sucks). So much for help, Even the State government won't help, Maybe they want a bribe to do their job, But I'm finished as I don't know where to turn to and My relatives can't help Me either. :(

Oh and Medi-Cal has allowed these type of Operations since July 1999 for Reconstructive Surgery(scroll down the PDF or search for July 1999), But It's effectively worthless, Even with a referral for a Surgical Consultation from My Doctor in Barstow CA.
