. . . Biologist Gunther Stent has died at 84 - "a Renaissance Man: A Contributor to Science, Art and Philosophy"
Gunther Stent, one of the original thinkers in the field of molecular biology, whose research wrestled with and validated the breakthrough discovery of the structure of DNA,
died Thursday near his home in Haverford, Pa. He was 84.
“Gunther was part of the intellectual glue that kept this small band of pioneers together,†Michael Botchan, co-chairman of the department of molecular and cell biology at the
University of California, Berkeley, said Friday.
That “small band†had surrounded James D. Watson and Francis H. C. Crick, who in 1953 revealed the double-helix structure of DNA, or deoxyribonucleic acid, the molecule that is
the medium in which genetic information is stored and passed from generation to generation.
<snip>
"One of his most-cited papers was a proposed model for how learning takes place at the synapses of nerve cells," said neurobiologist David Weisblat, a former postdoctoral fellow
with Stent who now is a UC Berkeley professor of molecular and cell biology. While that 1973 paper still influences researchers, Stent's other theories often went by the wayside.
"Gunther was famous for being wrong about stuff," Weisblat added. "He loved ideas, whether they were right or wrong, as long as they led to discussion and new ideas or experiments."

< The Allen Telescope Array >
. . . another 'blast' from the Past - ScienceDaily (Oct. 12, 2007)
. . . ORIGINAL ARTICLE Science News - Search For Extraterrestrial Intelligence: Allen Telescope Array Begins Scientific Observations
Science Daily  The University of California, Berkeley and the SETI Institute have announced that the first 42 radio dishes of the Allen Telescope Array (ATA) have been activated and collecting scientific data from the far reaches of the universe. This is the first phase of a planned 350 radio dishes that will advance the capabilities of radio astronomy research. Paul G. Allen, Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist whose foundation donated seed money that started the project in 2001, joined representatives of UC Berkeley and the SETI Institute to launch the array.
“This is a great day for the science of radio astronomy and the study of the cosmos,†said Leo Blitz, UC Berkeley professor of astronomy and director of the university’s Radio Astronomy Laboratory, which is building the ATA with the SETI Institute. “Thanks to a unique intersection between the best in science, advanced, innovative technology and bold philanthropy, many secrets of the universe are a little closer to being revealed.â€Â
"This project represents a potential breakthrough in building large arrays of radio telescopes that are extremely cost effective,†said Paul G. Allen, primary funder of the ATA. “As now deployed and with plenty of room for growth in the future, the telescope can fulfill a multitude of uses, including broad radio sky surveys and the search for evidence of extraterrestrial technology. I’m pleased to be able to contribute to such an important advancement and help build on the work this new telescope will do in the future. My hat is off to the team that worked so hard these last seven years to accomplish this significant milestone.â€Â
Every object in space emits radio waves that can be collected and studied. From observation of these signals, radio astronomers can create a picture of astronomical bodies and events at great distances, revealing detail not discernable by telescopes operating at other wavelengths. The ATA will acquire data in a new way, imaging a large piece of the sky at once. What sets the ATA apart from earlier radio telescopes is its ability to collect and, analyze more information about celestial objects, and do this simultaneously for several projects. In addition, observational surveys can be made with greater speed than any previous or existing radio device.
“For SETI, the ATA’s technical capabilities exponentially increase our ability to search for intelligent signals, and may lead to the discovery of thinking beings elsewhere in the universe,†said astronomer Seth Shostak of the SETI Institute in Mountain View, Calif. “It is the first major telescope in the world built specifically for undertaking a search for extraterrestrial intelligence.â€Â
The ATA opens the doors to a new era of scientific progress. The telescope’s potential discoveries include a better understanding of exploding stars (supernovas), black holes, and new, exotic astronomical objects that are predicted but not yet observed. It will also provide expanded search capabilities to determine if intelligent civilizations have evolved around other stars. The ATA is the first panchromatic, wide-angle, snapshot, radio camera ever built. It is the most effective tool to create radio images of a vast area of the sky ever placed in the hands of researchers.
Located in an arid valley near the town of Hat Creek, just north of Lassen Volcanic National Park in northern California, the new array is already collecting important data. The first test images, released today from data gathered by the 42 ATA telescopes, include a radio map of the nearby Andromeda Galaxy (M31) and the Triangulum Galaxy (M33).
Beyond its speed and ability to both garner and analyze data, the ATA is also the first centimeter wavelength radio telescope with the ability to multi-task. While making innovative observations for radio astronomy, it can simultaneously interrogate solar-type stars for artificially produced signals that would reveal the presence of extraterrestrial intelligence.
This new capability increases many-fold the time astronomers can devote to large-scale surveys of the stars, as well as expanding the radio frequency band over which they can search. For SETI, in particular, this means that over the next two-dozen-years, the ATA will get a thousand times more data than has been accumulated in the past 45 years.
The ATA uses mass-produced, 20-foot diameter radio dishes and commercial telecommunications technologies combined with an innovative receiver design, and state-of-the-art digital signal processing technology. Working together, these small dishes create a telescope with a wide field of view ideally suited to rapidly surveying the sky. The layout of the 42 dishes was created by a computer model and is optimized to provide high quality radio imagery of the sky. The ATA can also filter out noise from man-made interference that in many radio telescopes would render much of the data unusable. The array can be easily upgraded as new advances in computer or telecommunications technology become available.
The total cost of the project to date, including research, development and construction costs for the array and the necessary radio astronomy and SETI signal detectors, is $50 million. The first phase of this project was funded through generous grants from the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation totaling $25 million. UC Berkeley, the SETI Institute, the National Science Foundation, Xilinx, Nathan Myhrvold, Greg Papadopoulos, and other corporations and individual donors contributed additional funding. Both UC Berkeley and the SETI Institute are engaging in additional fundraising efforts to complete the full 350-dish array.
The full 350-dish array, when completed in approximately three years, will have unprecedented research capabilities. Capitalizing on constant advancements in computer technology, the ATA will be manufactured at a fraction of the cost of traditional instruments. The ATA team is prepared to install more dishes as additional funding is secured.

The Charles H. Townes Fellowship is a Prize Fellowship in Experimental Astrophysics and Space Physics at the Space Sciences Laboratory at UC Berkeley. The fellowship offers recent Ph.D. recipients the opportunity to pursue independent research projects, in part by being granted Principal Investigator status at UC Berkeley for the duration of their fellowship.
It is expected, however, that the recipient will work closely with one of the established experimental research groups at UC Berkeley, taking advantage of existing facilities and resources. Applicants are strongly encouraged to contact the research group with which they are likely to be associated. While the focus of the Townes Fellowship is primarily instrumental, strong observational components to the proposed research program are encouraged. Fellowships are awarded for two years, with a possible renewal for a third year.
The annual salary is $55,000 with an additional research fund of $7,000 per year. Health benefits are included for Fellows and their dependents. . . . June 2, 2001 quote from Peter Ericson: "The discovery of intelligent life in the universe on the other hand would most likely
drastically change the way we look upon ourselves, our place in the universe, and the world. It is the detection of extraterrestrial
intelligence that would have the greatest effects on all of us. It is my belief that the consequences of such a discovery would be
profound and reach all the way down to the very foundations upon which our whole society is based"
. . . What to Expect when E.T. Calls
SETI@home: Procedures for Public Announcement . . .
Upon discovery and confirmation of signals produced by extraterrestrial intelligence, SETI@home will make an announcement
in the form of an IAU (International Astronomical Union) telegram. This is a standard way of informing the astronomical community
of important discoveries. The telegram contains all of the important information (frequencies, bandwidth, location in the sky, etc.)
that would be necessary for other astronomical groups to confirm the observation. The person(s) who found the signal with their
screen saver would be named as one of the co-discoverers along with the others on the SETI@home team. At this point we would still
be unsure if the signal was generated by an intelligent civilization or maybe some new astronomical phenomenon.
All information about the discovery will be made public, probably via the web. No country or individual would be allowed to jam the
frequency the signal is observed on. Since the object will rise and set as seen from any given location, observations from radio
observatories around the world will be necessary. This will, by necessity, be a multi-national effort. All this information will be made public.
There is an official protocol for announcing extraterrestrial signals called
Declaration of Principles Concerning Activities Following the Detection of Extraterrestrial Intelligence.
Because of this protocol, it is important that participants in the SETI@home project do not get excited when they see signals on their screen
and go off on their own making announcements and calling the press. This could be very damaging to the project.
It's important that we keep our heads cool and our computers hot while they grind away at the data. We can all hope that we will be the one
that helps receive the signal of some extraterrestrial civilization trying to "phone home."

Algorithmic messages . . .
Algorithmic communication systems are a relatively new field within CETI. In these systems, which build upon early work on mathematical languages,
the sender describes a small set of math and logic symbols that form the basis for a rudimentary programming language that the recipient can run
on a virtual machine. Algorithmic communication has a number of advantages over static pictorial and mathematical messages, including: localized
communication (the recipient can probe and interact with the programs within a message, without transmitting a reply to the sender and then waiting
years for a response), forward error correction (the message might contain algorithms that process data elsewhere in the message), and the ability
to embed proxy agents within the message.
In principle, a sophisticated program when run on a fast enough computing substrate, may exhibit complex behavior and perhaps intelligence.

I'm really sorry Richard but I have to disagree. There is no way the USA security services would allow SETI to publicise any contact.
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/sah_glossary/public_announcement.php
Then can we assume, as the project has not been shut down by the security services, that they believe that there is little risk of making alien contact through the seti project? Reality Internet Personality

. . . a Reminiscence of the SETI Social Club Days - 06.20.2002
Ron's Technique / Answer to SETI SIGNAL
I recommend photoshop. after pasting the http link above in your browser -
right click on the 6000 left of the graphic and save this gif
000_000.gif "Graphics Interchange Format"
Following are menu commands in photoshop 7.0
Image/Mode/RGB "Filters will not apply if not in this mode".
Image/Rotate canvas/90 CCW "Aligns the anomaly for viewing"
- Select Region "Powermap Area"
Then Image/Adjust/Invert "Changes the anomaly from a negative to a positive"
Then Image/Adjust/Hue +50 "Better visual spectrum"
Then Filter/Blur/Guassian Blur 1.2 "This gives depth to the graphic"
DO NOT USE BLUR - gaussian blur takes a summed area.
Monitor calibration will vary from computer to computer.
The anomaly shoud be visiable at this time.
Image/Adjust/levels for the histogram or simply burn the shadow areas with the
burn tool at +2. for higher contrast and area targeting.
There. . .. No more bogus creation or conspiricy theorys.
You take the helm ! ! ! !
you get to skip the countless hours and enjoy recreating this on
your computer providing you have photoshop "Adobe" or comparable
graphics program. The overlay was done in Flash MX "Macromedia"
Phew. . . to think we discovered penicillin from mould.
In 1871 the scientist Joseph Lister, by chance, noticed that the mould which
grows on cheese and fruit when it goes bad can make microbes - or germs - grow

realise fully the importance of his findings . . ..

I Saw your proof that the filter dosn't manipulate the integrity of
your picture, but your example of the powermap is not the on produced
by the berkely institute, when you whud take closer look you will reconize
that:
A: The Powermap has only 7 Diffrent color spectrume
B: Your Powermap is highly denst wich the orignal Powermap isnt
C: The Powermaps are a diagramms for messurment and other sorts not
to be used for digital manuplation or other sorts
So and now to your proof.
i have posted some explanation on my other post
but here is it again.(a little bit better i hope)
When you take the powermap and look closey, you will reconize that the powermap
is not very dents with pixel, what i mean is you have a red dot representing data
of a signal wich is Power and there is the black dot wich means no Power,
when you take your blure filter and use it on the powermap, the filter
will smooth the colors between two dots,so when there was a black dot
wich reprecents No Power, now there is a dot between the color of red and black wich create your depth,
but that is inacurte because there sopose to be now Dot no power.
in a nother word is,when the powermap is there for Messurment of the signal power, and you use it with the blure filter,
then you have manipulate the data, so wich also means that your anomalies is not from the powermap, but a cause true your useing the
blure filter
I hope you understand this just take time and look carfuly

I understand the methods and scope of what I have presented.
You have some really good points! These points is what make people skeptic, I
will try to explain.
>>A: The Powermap has only 7 Diffrent color spectrume
Color does not play a role in this analysis, If you took a white crayon on a
white piece of paper it is very hard too see but that can be separated into a
high contrast black and white easily viewable image.
Below is a sample that should clear why some things in the analyzed image are
darker.
http://webpages.charter.net/analysis/jason.htm
The yello and white in the SETI powermap of Dec 25th are discarded because they
are nominal. Color is irrelivant, it is the depth of the
color/greyscale "Levels" that is of most importance.
>>B: Your Powermap is highly denst wich the orignal Powermap isnt
Consider this process like staining a specimen on a microscope slide, it's just
enhanced to see better, can the data be used for algorithm decoding a message
after the analysis -no : We brought certain aspects of the sample in the link
http://webpages.charter.net/analysis/jason.htm I posted above in to a range
that is viewable. I believe that change is what you are seeing in the
analysis.
>>C: The Powermaps are a diagramms for messurment and other sorts not
>>to be used for digital manuplation or other sorts
Remember a photo is a diagram for measurements of light - Hilight/Midtone/Shadow
Is light not the most common form of energy? Doesn't the powermaps return
energy?
>>When you take the powermap and look closey, you will reconize that the powermap
>>is not very dents with pixel, what i mean is you have a red dot representing
>>data
>>of a signal wich is Power and there is the black dot wich means no Power,

Almost all of printed material/ magazines/poster/ are comprised up of Dots.
They call this a screen, Newspapers are 80 LPI "Lines per inch" Magazines of
High quality are 200 + on the LPI. In printing if you take a screened image and
screen it again you get a morai pattern. This is unwanted pattern when trying
to represent a image for printing, "The powermaps where never a photo", I just
brought them to this 1st stage" Also the "Screening" Type of Scans SETI is
doing are not 100% image ready, with some modifications of the type of scans
and energy representations they are doing could possible fill in the blanks
where I have driven doubt. "If there is something there".
>>then you have manipulate the data, so wich also means that your anomalies is
>>not from the powermap, but a cause true your useing the
>>blure filter
I am using the data in a different way. . . I assume the energy of the skymap
represents is being absorbed/distorted, there should be a normal consistency of
ramdomness across the sky, The raw powermap of Dec 25th to me displayed
something that seemed not so random, Remember I looked at dot structures for
the past 18 years closely as they were reproduced on paper, "Printing".
>>I hope you understand this just take time and look carfuly
Thank you for your constructive questions, even if this is nothing
I want to say it was hard for me to come forth and present this.
It was like putting a target on my forehead and preparing for the flak
I have read such adjectives as Conspiracy, Bogus, Nuts, Spycode, Fake and I
appreciate your patience as I am looking for answers as you are too.

Like a few before him, his zest for life and his knowledge of things beyond was quenched due to monetary and political reasons......as has often been true.
