We don't tend to talk about 'class' these days but it would be interesting to see where SETI people place themselves.

Class is a complex issue involving family history, upbringing, experiences, education, political choices and income.

Would you say you are working class, middle class or upper class? Or maybe something else or something more complex.?

OR

What class (or aspect of) do you think the majority of SETI crunchers or forum members belong to?

Dennis and I don't agree on much but I think I'd like him to be in my 'class'. :-P

But to take the point of this thread back to a serious level of consideration I would like to point out that America, as the first nation in the history of the world to be founded upon a set of ideas is one where class ultimately does not matter. I've had English girlfriends years ago, one who was considered 'posh' I suppose, and know that this idea of 'class' is specific to cultures where wealth and power were consecrated and endowed by birth and not merit.

Funnily the philosophic principles that drive racist beliefs are quite similar in cultures that are generally not racist (like the UK) yet persist. They are two sides of the same coin. They do not hold that someone, man or woman, should be regarded as civil or 'advanced' except by virtue of their breeding, whether or not they deserve such reputation upon their merits or accomplished virtues. Cultures like the Francos detest 'new money'...especially. Historically, and rightfully so for some reasons (albeit irrational in today's contexts) are suspect of it as if it must have been acquired through dastardly deeds.

It's an interesting concept that the USA is without class.

I'm not using the word 'class' in a specific way but just to indicate strata of society that are repeated over generations. That is after all the basis of class.

Oddly the Conservative (democratic - right wing) PM Margaret Thatcher in 1999/81 said that there were no classes in the UK.

Do American's really believe the USA is a meritocracy in which people earn their position based upon merit?

What about college kids. Do all of the 200++ million in the USA have the same chance of getting into Harvard or even Berkeley? Or does it depend upon their family, social or ecconomic backgrounds?

Can you imagine a year in which the American Dream (anyone can make it) actually came true. Statistically if the American Dream is true then there should be one year in history that all who try will win at the same time.

Can you imagine a world where every one won the largest slice of the cake?

It's the same issue in the UK or the rest of the world.

Can you imagine. We would all kill each other to own that slice...

Perhaps I should have asked "What Class Were Your Parent's From" as that is an easier question than having to own up to where you personally were placed.

I came from the 'Artisan' class. Sort of between educated working class and technical middle class with a slight touch of the upper class artist added in :o))

It doesn't have to define me. It's where I started. Not where I am today.

some of you would say i´m in the upper class.
My income isn´t good enough but also not bad at all.

But how i am i´m not very proud at all.
The workers earns the money for a company, not the upper class.
I was a worker when i started in my company and after 10 years i was asked to try something new.
So i´m not so bad on computers i should try to optimize some shipping routines.

With each crime and every kindness we birth our future.

Class.. What is that? In the outer meaning i will have to say im of the lowest, child of a fisher man, and all my ancestors in that line was pretty poor people, not having much when it comes to money or education. Still, i have never felt as lower class.. I am fully aware im as worthy as everyone else. And I do think that our view about ourself tells more than what "class" we were "born" into. I may have been lucky to live in this time, and in this country. It is much more diffcult many other places to be accepted if your not from the "right class". But again i am sure it mostly depend on what people think about themselves. A victim is mostly made if we start feeling like a victim, and holds that idea as an excuse. I will not excuse myself for being who i am, and i dont need excuses from others because of that. Its only our behave towards other people that really means something in this matter. And if we treat our sourroundings bad, its no use in the word High-class. Yes :) this is my idea of the word.. and i do hope i will keep it.. ;-)

I would concider myself in the working class. I made pretty decent money, but I'm not living in the lime light. But I work my butt off for what I got. :-)

My wife and I have a good income and we own a nice home....2 pups..

My father was a physician so we really never wanted for much...and I am incredibly grateful.

I'd say upper middle class...but very much a working family

Born dirt poor...

Entered lower middle class for a brief stint in the service...

Now I'm back to dirt poor (worse if I count my debts)...

Whoo hoo! I've come full circle!!! :P
Keep on crunching, all...
