A Christian Hymn

All things bright and beautiful,
All creatures great and small,
All things wise and wonderful:
The Lord God made them all.
Each little flower that opens,
Each little bird that sings;
He made their glowing colors,
He made their tiny wings.
The purple-headed mountain,
The river running by,
The sunset and the morning
That brightens up the sky.
The cold wind in the winter,
The pleasant summer sun,
The ripe fruits in the garden;
He made them every one.
He gave us eyes to see them,
And lips that we might tell
How great is God Almighty,
Who has made all things well.

1910 - GORDON B. HINCKLEY - 2008

Morman president who led expansion

By Jennifer Dobner
ASSOCIATED PRESS

January 28, 2008

SALT LAKE CITY – Gordon B. Hinckley, the longest-serving president of the Mormon church who presided over one of the greatest periods of expansion in its history, died yesterday, a church spokesman said. He was 97.

Hinckley, the 15th president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, died because of complications from age.

“His life was a true testament of service, and he had an abiding love for others,” said U.S. Sen. Orrin Hatch, a Utah Republican and fellow Mormon. “His wit, wisdom and exemplary leadership will be missed by not only members of our faith, but by people of all faiths throughout the world.”

Hinckley had been diagnosed with diabetes and was hospitalized in January 2006 for the removal of a cancerous growth in his large intestine. In April 2006, he told a church conference he was in the “sunset of my life” and “totally in the hands of the Lord.”

By unfailing tradition, at a church president's death, the church's most senior apostle is ordained within days on a unanimous vote of the Council of the Twelve Apostles. The most long-serving apostle now is Thomas S. Monson.

The church presidency is a lifetime position. Before Hinckley, the oldest church president was David O. McKay, who was 96 when he died in 1970.

Hinckley, a grandson of Mormon pioneers, was president for nearly 13 years. Since he took over as president and prophet on March 12, 1995, the number of temples worldwide more than doubled, from 49 to more than 120, and church membership grew from about 9 million to more than 12 million.

Like his Roman Catholic contemporary, Pope John Paul II, he became by far his church's most traveled leader in history.

And the number of Mormons outside the United States surpassed that of American Mormons for the first time since the church, the most successful faith born in the United States, was founded in 1830.

Hinckley began his leadership role in 1995 by holding a rare news conference, citing growth and spreading the Mormon message as the church's main challenge heading into the 21st century.

“We are dedicated . . . to teaching the gospel of peace, to the promotion of civility and mutual respect among people everywhere, to bearing witness to the living reality of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the practice of his teachings in our daily lives,” Hinckley said.

Over the years, Hinckley labored long to burnish the faith's image as a world religion far removed from its peculiar and polygamous roots.

Still, during his tenure, the Roman Catholic Church, Southern Baptist Convention and United Methodist Church – the three largest U.S. denominations – each declared that Mormon doctrines depart from mainstream Christianity.

“We are not a weird people,” Hinckley told Mike Wallace on “60 Minutes” in 1996.

“The more people come to know us, the better they will understand us,” Hinckley said in an interview with The Associated Press in late 2005. “We're a little different. We don't smoke. We don't drink. We do things in a little different way. That's not dishonorable. I believe that's to our credit.”

Hinckley's grandfather knew church founder Joseph Smith and followed Brigham Young west to the Great Salt Lake Basin. Hinckley often spoke of the Mormon heritage of pioneer sacrifice and its importance as a model for the modern church.

“I think as long as history lasts there will be an interest in the roots of this work, a very deep interest,” Hinckley said in a 1994 interview with the AP.

“Because insofar as the people of the church are concerned, without a knowledge of those roots and faith in the validity of those roots, we don't have anything,” he said.

Being an unfailing tradition, what's the point of a unanimous vote... ;)

Matthew 7:20
Thus you will know them by their fruits.

Maybe God should've said:
You will know them by their 'dyslexia'...

Example:
Jesus was a man who knew no sin, yet he was accused, convicted, and crucified as a sinner by those who were sinners themselves...

2000 years later, nothing has changed... ;)

(No offense intended towards those who suffer from the medical condition.)

I Thessalonians 5:1-4
But as to the times and the seasons, brethren, you have no need to have anything written to you.
For you yourselves know well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. When people say, "There is peace and security," then sudden destruction will come upon them as travail comes upon a woman with child, and there will be no escape. But you are not in darkness, brethren, for that day to surprise you like a thief.

Keep working towards that 'peace and security' folks... ;)

(Old Testament) Isaiah 45:22-23
"Turn to me and be saved, all the ends of the earth! For I am God, and there is no other. By myself I have sworn, from my mouth has gone forth in righteousness a word that shall not return: `To me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear.'

(New Testament) Romans 14:11
for it is written, "As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall give praise to God."

(Final Testament) Qur'an 3:83
Do they seek for other than the Religion of Allah?−while all creatures in the heavens and on earth have, willing or unwilling, bowed to His Will (Accepted Islam), and to Him shall they all be brought back.

In summary: Every knee shall bow... ;)

you'll enjoy this "Rapture" thingy I've got planned.

Revelation of John 6:9-11
When he opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain for the word of God and for the witness they had borne; they cried out with a loud voice, "O Sovereign Lord, holy and true, how long before thou wilt judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell upon the earth?" Then they were each given a white robe and told to rest a little longer, until the number of their fellow servants and their brethren should be complete, who were to be killed as they themselves had been.

While the true believers will be spared Gods wrath on earth, the 'rapture' is nothing more than a feel good term for 'martyrdom'... ;)

Mormon church president, 80, undaunted by fast-changing world

By Eric Gorski
ASSOCIATED PRESS

February 5, 2008

SALT LAKE CITY – The new president and prophet of the Mormon church is in some respects a throwback, an 80-year-old man with a fondness for talking in parables and quoting Charles Dickens.

But Thomas S. Monson is also described as a student of a fast-changing world and his faith's place in it. He oversaw the building of a Mormon temple behind the Iron Curtain and was at ease visiting the Roman Catholic cathedral in Salt Lake City, friends say.

Monson was named the 16th president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints yesterday. He immediately de clared that the 13 million-member denomination would not veer significantly from the course set by his predecessor, Gordon Hinckley, who died Wednesday at age 97.

Monson takes over at a time when the church is undergoing rapid growth around the globe and coming under close scrutiny because of the campaign for the White House by Mitt Romney, a Mormon.

“Although procedures and programs may be adjusted from time to time, the doctrine is constant,” Monson said at a news conference, and he pledged to continue building bridges with people of other faiths.

As the longest-tenured of 14 apostles who served the church president, Monson was all but assured of taking over the presidency, in keeping with long-standing church practice.

The president of the Mormon church is revered as a “prophet, seer and revelator.” Because the church believes in continuing revelation, past church presidents have changed church teachings, outlawing polygamy in 1890 and lifting a ban in 1978 on black men holding the Mormon priesthood.

Monson is a Navy veteran of World War II who holds a master's degree in business administration from the church-owned Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. At 22, he was called as a bishop – the Mormon equivalent of a pastor. Monson later served as president of the church's Canadian mission and at 36 was called to the elite Quorum of the Twelve, giving him a good chance of becoming church president one day.

But his wasn't a sheltered existence; Monson often was the voice of Mormonism to outsiders, serving on a Reagan administration interfaith panel.

Dieter Uchtdorf, who later joined Monson on the Quorum of the Twelve, called Monson “a man of great courage, a man of great wisdom, of deep love, of deep spiritual power and warm sensitivity for the individual like no one else.”

Monson freely quotes from the Bible but also from Dickens, one of his favorite authors. In a 1991 article in a church magazine, Monson cited a passage from “A Christmas Carol” to illustrate his point that children “are most perceptive and often utter profound truths.”

Yesterday, Monson promoted Uchtdorf, 67, a Czech-born former German airline executive, to the church's First Presidency, a three-man body that includes Monson.

The selection of the sole apostle born outside the United States could signal that Monson is aware of the challenges facing what has become a global enterprise. About 55 percent of all Mormons now live outside the United States, and some countries are experiencing problems retaining believers.

To learn is a wonderful thing.

How far have you gotten with speaking or writing Arabic?

Are you learning using English phonetics or working on Arabic script?

Will you become our resident Anglo-Arabic translator?

To learn is a wonderful thing.

That's an interesting image ("ForMotherEngland.jpg") of your's 'Scary Capitalist'...

It's quite a low pixel image.

What is the object (are the objects) laid out on the English flag?

What do they represent?

It kind of looks like a gun.

Is it a "fun" parody of a weapon?
