The difference of this project forum is most countries involved but least of them freely talk in this forum. That is the weirdest thing. The 'weirdest thing' to me is the many American posters masquerading as International posters... ;) It may not be 1984 but George Orwell sure did see the future . . . |

I simply believe Orgil is correct in asking where the non-euro or english speaking people are. And that is your right to disagree with me, and I respect that. Now you should respect that I have a difference of opinion and disagree with you. All I have seen so far is that mods are more concerned with self protection. ...and you got this feeling out of me too? I've come to the 'rescue' of the Mods before? I post of my own volition. I prefer it that way so that I can't be accused of favoritism (though one day I'm sure I will be anway). SETI would not exist if it's founders had not taken a risk. Sure I would, because somebody else would be doing it. We don't have to talk or even know each other to partake in SETI@Home. SETI@Home was and is a risk for the scientific value every day. They have their battles to fight writing grants, getting newer hardware, coordinating with the BOINC developers and God knows what else just to keep the project running on their end. I simply feel we should not be putting more burden on them when we are capable of performing such a small task as this ourselves. If you want more diversity, then provide it yourself. That's all I am saying. Orgil is absolutely correct to ask his questions. He absolutely has a right to ask non-derogatory questions. And it is within everyone else's right to disagree and state as much. As a forum we should support this. We don't have to support every single idea that comes by. Some just aren't good ideas and people have a right to speak up when they think so. Not everything is about holding hands and backing each other up. Life is all about respecting differences in a dignified manner. If we all felt the same, this world would be a boring place. I am gob-smacked that so many mods have turned up.. Based on the principal of possibilities, it's bound to happen from time to time. Especially when the other Mods in this post partake in this forum all the time. The only oddity is me. |

... Don't worry, I think most of us, if not all, now will go back to supervise mode, just as we do most. "I'm trying to maintain a shred of dignity in this world." - Me |

... SNIP... If some alien arrived on earth I suspect their technology would be so far in advance of us that the only level they would be able to communicate with us on is at the social level. Imagine you lived in ancient egypt and some one turned up in a helicopter.. You might be interested but in the end it will only ever be the social interaction that matters. You might learn to fly the machine but that has nothing to do with science. ... and to be naughty:
Individuals can post anywhere but "mods" should post related to their duties... If 5 police officers turned up on your door just to tell you your dog was barking too loud I am sure you would think it quite strange! If you are suggesting mods are the same as any other poster that is fine by me. I will simply disregard anything they say in the future and take my chances. I doubt you really mean that... I suspect the words "SETI Forum" are a mod magnet. (Good needs no advocate.) |

May I say a few uncontroversial words here? cRunchy, what you said here was interesting to me...
Why don't we have more participants from India? Maybe we could place a few interesting ads in the major Indian newspapers? Maybe we could write the editors and ask them to place the ads for free? Draw up a nice certificate of support for those kind editors, something they'd enjoy showing off with at the office? Maybe when we call up the Microsoft call centers in Bangelor or Chenai, we can ask the technicians if they've ever heard of Seti? See if we could get them involved? (I'm going to try that tomorrow) Maybe we can get a poster campaign going for Seti in, say, the small villages in Ireland? We'd need someone to use their Photoshop to draw up a poster; see if anyone has connections with a printer; ask for forum members to sign up and distribute a few posters in their local village; get a poster campaign going? Maybe we could use a thread here in the Cafe to consider ideas for expanding the grass roots growth of Seti? Say, "Seti Appleseed" or whatever? Yes, I'd like to see a lot more Seti friends from India posting here! :)) |

May I say a few uncontroversial words here? How about taking care of the Indians who're here already, to make them feel welcome? I asked cRunchy earlier in this thread about what happened to that Indian guy who are in his own team, and he didn't even know the guy! He didn't even know there's an Indian guy in his team! This is so sad of you Fuzzy. I admit I am a poor creature. I have aways tried to speak well on the SETI forums but do you know who I am? Do you know my ethnic background Fuzzy? I guess I should tell you now so that you do not keep using me as a punch bag: I don't care what the cultural background is of any of my team members. They are my family. My team is my starting point. I accept them regardless. If you want to harp on and on in public that I do not know the 'Indian' person you so lovingly refer to well... So what! We are not talking about the person you refer to. I thought this thread was about being inclusive of cultures and populations and not some individual. Beethoven has offered us an oppourtunity for us to promote the project. I suggest we focus upon that. PS. I will start a thread on my team board asking who is Indian just for you Fuzzy. |

I remember him cRunchy... although I am not surprised you don't. He only made 72 posts and I don't think you were posting on seti at the time. . Praphul Sen Ugrasenan I kinda feel sorry for the guy..posts here for a short while and suddenly he is the seti token Indian guy. Just shows how few people there must be posting here who are from India. Reality Internet Personality |

. Esme you are correct. I took quite a long time away from posting last year. Praphul's last post was in October 2006. I don't know if this is the person Fuzzy meant. I sometimes wonder how women members and moderators feel given they are the minority here. I suspect people who do not fit the white / euro / US average feel similar. Pressure to perform is not good. |

Well, as long as the native English speakers don't have a problem with grammar and spelling errors of the non native speakers I don't see a reason why we should not post in the language most of us understand. The internet is also very widespread and communities/people come and go, can't force them. |

I sometimes wonder how women members and moderators feel given they are the minority here. I suspect people who do not fit the white / euro / US average feel similar. Just because someone is a minority, doesn't mean they should be catered to. If they don't want to be a minority, they need to do something about it. It's their choice to invite their friends or find a place that they feel comfortable. There's been no hostility here toward different cultures that I've seen (nor women despite claims to the contrary), so there's no reason to go out of our way to specifically target them and say "hey! Come post here! We love ya!" If they want to post, then they will. If they don't feel comfortable, then we cannot and should not have to hold their hands until they do. Further, I notice one recurring argument in that SETI has some social value, and you argue that since it has social value, the project should actively encourage more culture. If given enough though, technically everything has social value. It all depends on what we're into. The internet is a huge place with all sorts of forums for people to get together and talk about whatever they care about. To say that it's a responsibility of someone who is offering a place to meet as a courtesy to insist on more activity from other countries is just plain silly. Should a cafe owner, who is in the business for selling food and drink bend over backwards because another customer feels they don't have enough minorities in the joint? No. People will go wherever they choose to go. No single place should have to cater to any specific type of person unless they actively choose to as a target for their business. [edit] Oh, and you don't know my ethical background either. Did you know that I'm 50% Native American? My biological father was 100% and my Grandfather was right off a reservation. I bet there's more women or Spanish speaking or Eastern speaking people on these boards than there are pure blooded Native Americans posting here. Should I complain that SETI is not actively encouraging Native Americans to post? Or should I just realize that it isn't SETI@Home's reponsibility and being a minority is a good, unique thing and I have a chance to offer my perspective of my own volition and not because somebody wanted more Native Americans on the board just to look good? I'm going with the latter. |

I don't think this is SETI@Home's responsibility to basically make people talk on the boards. Hehee. I was going to add to this. But your posting covered it. lol. I especially enjoyed (and deride)the idea of 'Crunchy' where he says that SETI is not a true 'humanity project' BECAUSE there aren't enough internationals. Either SETI @ Home does its work or it doesn't. This other business.....is ......well............other business. Some people just don't appreciate what this participation is. This is CHARITY. And it's charity by those of us that chooooooose to offer it. Now it's our fault we haven't done enough to get MORE charity of the RIGHT sources. Bloody altruists. Founder of BOINC team Objectivists. Oh the humanity! Rational people crunching data! I did NOT authorize this belly writing! |

. Yes, this is the person I mean. Didn't he make it to your teamboard? I thought you knew him from there? How come you don't because I know how much your team means to you and how much you need their support and interest for your person because they are your family, as you put it? So how come a person joins your team, a team where you are all family, and you don't even know about it? Haven't you, singular and plural, welcomed him and made him feel like he has arrived to his family? This is so sad of you, cRunchy. I remember long time ago a person who was so sad because he felt ignored on his teamboard, he felt that nobody noticed him. I had a longer email conversation with him about this. Now this person from India, who were quite active on this board and who joined your team, haven't you any ideas of why he suddenly stopped posting? He's apparently not posting on your teamboard, since you don't know him? Haven't you made him feel welcome and as a part of the family over there? And there are several of your teammates who posted here for a while who are missing. What have you done to make these people come back and feel welcome? Have you sent them a PM asking to their wellbeing and asked them to come back and post? Have you invited them to join the table? Yes, this is really so sad of you! It sometimes is easier to invite a lot of unknown people to come and sit at the table than those who are already there in your family, who should be sitting at the table already, but they don't. Now I'm sad! :-( "I'm trying to maintain a shred of dignity in this world." - Me |
