I want to ask owners of the above CPU how hot their rooms get when they run SETI. Also, how hot is the weather in the place you work/live? Intel Quad Core CPUs give off alot of heat (similar to Intel CPUs several years ago) AFAIK. I currently live very close to the equator (1 degree latitide to be precise), so a hot PC can turn my room into a suana! |

Hi, the increasing room temperature depends on too many things to translate it to your environment. Looking on your current systems, you can try it out. OK, that will be a rough estimation. Power up one system plus a 60W-100W light bulb (must be one of the old filament types, they use most energy to heat up the room). Not very scientific, but that might give you an idea. Best regards Michael |

I let run my Intel Core2 Extreme QX6700 (130W Thermal Design Power) with the stock (Intel Boxed) heatsink. I think, if your CPU make a lot of heat, the manufacturer make the stock heatsink like this, that the CPU don't go hot.. and because of this the heat don't go to the room.. I think your PSU give more heat to the room than the CPU.. Only my thinking about.. Because the rear fan from my PC don't give/take warm air out of the case.. (120 mm with 50 CFM/ 85 m3/h) The (fan of the) PSU give warmer air to the room.. (120 mm with automatic fan control) BTW. I OC this CPU from 2.66 to 3.14 GHz, so he must have more than 130W TDP.. (the CPU is ~ 4 °C warmer) ![]() |

I have a 2.13 ghz xeon quad and a q6700, both @ 3 Ghz. The total system of each draw about 350-370 watts. As long as the outdoor temp is above 10 celcius one of them heats my room, about 12 sq.m., fairly efficiently to around 30+ C forcing me to keep the door open. /Anton |

I have a 2.13 ghz xeon quad and a q6700, both @ 3 Ghz. The total system of each draw about 350-370 watts. What you do with your QX6700? Or it's the new Q6700? My QX6700 use 'only' max. 230 W @ 3.14 GHz! All fans on max. and S@H on 4 Cores! O.K., I have only a nVIDIA GeFORCE 6200 PCI-e, but.. ![]() |

I run a Q6600 lightly overclocked to 3.0 GHz at 1.35V requested. The box has three hard drives, two optical drives, a sound card, and a very modest (thus low-power) graphics card. Total box power reported by a Kill-A-Watt power monitor is about 140W idle, 215W running four Einsteins. SETI is more variable, but I think an average number running four SETI is probably near 230W. (that is _not_ CPU power, but total box) The monitor is extra, but that turns off well enough to go to less than 1W 20 minutes after I stop typing. Yes, adding over 200W to a room can warm it up noticeably. I'd very roughly guess that in my current room (roughly 15x10 feet), it raises the temperature 3 degrees C from what it otherwise would be, but that is not a very accurate guess. You can build the box with fewer extras than mine. In the warmest times you can tell BOINC to use fewer than 4 processors or less than 100% of CPU time as means to reduce power. If you restrain your overclock and instead reduce the CPU voltage, you can cut system operating power substantially--this actually gives better credits/watt than cutting back the number of processors or lowering the utilization. |

Yup it's the old qx model. I run a Geforce 8800GTS on that one and a 7900GTX on the other...so they contribute quite significantly to the power draw, i guess. /Anton |

With three Q6600 (2xB3, 1xG0, all OCed at minimum 30%) and outside temps at around 10°C the ambient temp in my room reads as 22°C...and all doors are open... |

I just got a Mac Pro dual quad core Xeon running at 3Ghz and it is on 24/7. I seriously think it will reduce the workload on my furnace this winter. It may even be all the heat my small house needs until winter really sets in here in Missouri. We have pretty mild winters for the most part (compared to Michigan where I grew up). My Pro really kicks out some heat. I haven't got my first electric bill since starting up my Pro. I hope I'm not in for too big a surprise $$$ wise. |

I live in the Tampa Bay, Florida area, and my new QX6800 Quad Core probably raised the temp in my room by 5 degrees F.. The factory fan and heatsink were about 1/3 larger then the Core2Duo, and the sound from the fan is also about 1/3 noiser then the Core2Duo, but no overheat problems and performance is greatly increased since switching. Very happy with the chip, even at $1,000.00 USD. |

I've got a Q6600 OC'd to 3.06 Room temp is 23.5c and my CPU is hitting around 62c. I find, on average, it raises my room temp up to 5 degrees. Join The Assimilators Free Internet Radio! "The Assimilators" Browser Toolbar! |

Hey guys.. because of my thinking.. Please, could you hold your hand in the airflow on the back of your case..? And then.. where is the warmer air? I think you will have it at the PSU, or? ..I think, the complete warm air from the CPU don't go through the PSU, or? ..if it's like at my case, a 120 mm rear fan with 50 CFM / 85 m3/h.. the warm air from the CPU have no chance to go through the PSU, or? So the hottest at a PC is the PSU..?! What you think about my 'theory'? BTW. O.K., my PSU have an automatic fan control.. but I think if the fan run at max. it will be warmer too.. ![]() |

Yes and no. My configuration has two 92mm front fans driving air into the case at 1800 rpm, one 120mm rear fan extracting air at 1300 rpm, one 120mm fan on the CPU heat sink/fan, running almost 2000 rpm, but neither in nor out, and a 120mm fan in the power supply, running at variable speed chosen by the supply, which extracts air from the case. The input air to the power supply comes from the region of the CPU, so the power supply is punished by getting the hottest air in the box as input, and of course heats it further. Nevertheless, the CPU dissipates more power in a very small place than does any single active device in the PSU, so depending on how effective the heat sinking is at holding the active device close to the airflow temperature, I think the CPU can easily be hotter. I think my CPU HSF is pretty good (small drop from CPU temp to ambient), so quite possibly in my box your theory is right. |

My 8800gts seems to have caused as many or more heat problems than my CPU. These things hog power at idle and are even worse under load. At least the CPUs downclock when idle (admittedly, that doesn't happen with BOINC going) but heatwise, high-end graphics are much worse than I realised. Once I upgrade my e4300 (@3ghz) to a q6600 I think more fans will be required... Crunching SETI@Home as a member of the Whirlpool BOINC Teams |

Since I installed 2 x Q6600 in my house, the weather outside seems to have got a lot warmer. And the air coming out of the Q6600 case vents seems cooler than the rest of the room. Crazy British summer! |

In PA (Philly Area) My SETI farm is: Several Q6600 all OC'd over 3Gh + one E6600 @ 3.3Gh + one AMD64 X2 6000 @ 3.2Gh + one AMD64 X2 5600 all w/ 1 Gb Ram 2x512 Sticks All units running XP Pro 64Bit and minimum video cards (if any at all) & single HDD & single Optical drive. Most in Large CLIO Cases with the addition of two 120mm 100+CFM exhaust fans (one rear + one top) with either Artic Pro 7 or Tuniq after market HSFs + all but one using 500W PSUs with 120mm Fans in them. The odd one is in a Full Tower case running a bank of 80mm fans & a 650W PSU with two fans (120mm + 80mm) in it. I plan on adding 5 x 500Gb SATA Drives to this one in the future. One of the AMDs is running four 180Gb SCSI Drives as my current File Server. All located in a single spare Bedroom. I need a Box Fan in the window sucking out the hot air and with my Central Air set @ 68F the compressor is engaged more so than not: I'd estimate about 60 - 75 % of the time. This has kept my Townhouse @ 68 - 70 F the entire summer. ![]() |

Well, I can tell you this much...... With 8 Core 2 crunchers whizzing away, my 14,700 btu AC unit can keep up with the heat load until the outside temp reaches about 80f. Then the inside temp starts to rise with the outside temp until the rigs start to crash. But I'm all OCd to the max, and have a phase cooler on one of the quads, so my heat load is a tad higher than some. Mahoujin, I just looked at an 18-year-old almanac which implied that Singapore is tropical year-round but not hot-as-blazes. It said 86/73F (30/23C) in January and 88/75F (31/24C) in July. It's been hotter than that here lately - toward the east, halfway up and down the United States. I wonder how those in Kuwait City live and run their machines. There it's hot as hell in the summer. often 120F/95F (48C/35C) and hotter. |
