Howdy folks. Well, what a jacked up day. Ugh. Anyone want a used, 1996 Chevy S10 Blazer, 4x4, 4 doors, tow package, leather seats, that liks to overheat?? I sell it to ya cheap!!! Stupid piece of crap. Let me start off, this will be kinda long: Last weekend, in preperation for hunting season in a little more than a month, I take this vehicle in to figure out why my heater isn't working. The mechanic shop does a pressure check, come to find out, I needed a new thermostat. They replace that, $105. I haven't had a chance to drive it all week, cept for 1 day, due to an incident happening that I'm not gonna go into detail here, cause that is yet another long story. Anyhow, we make our drive today, get down to Sacramento just fine. However, on the way back, I notice for some reason, my car overheating. So, I pull over, park in a parking lot, get out, notice all sorts of anti-freeze leaking out. I think, CRAP, water pump. Well, I have no extra anti-freeze with me, it uses Dex Cool btw. So I call my mechanic and he says just to add water if its leaking, cause water at this time of year is not gonna do any damage. Alrighty then. Fill the radiator up with water after it cools, start driving again. Same thing, starts to overheat. Well, this time, I dug a bit further, and thanks to a complete stranger who came and asked if we was ok, said that my radiator is shot, its got a break SOMEWHERE that I can't get to. So, I buy some stop leak, thinking "Hey, that should seal it up". WRONG!!! We left Sacramento around 2:30pm PST, we finally made it home, between stopping at least every 10 miles till we crested the Sierra Mountains at Donner Summit, at 9:00pm PST. A 2 1/2 hour trip that lasted 6 1/2 freakin hours. Anyhow, I'm home, we are all very very tired, and my car is going BACK into the shop to have a new radiator put in. So, now, I will claim a win, even if for a little while, cause I can. :-) |

Jeromy, it sounds to me like your mechanic screwed up your radiator. BTW, a thermostat costs about $7 and can be changed in most cars in a matter of minutes. The preasure test would have shown the leak right away, and this sounds like your mechanic must have jammed a wrench into your radiator while he was replacing the thermostat. In other words, I think you got taken for a ride, got bent over, and paid for the servicing all in one. You can rule out corrosion if you kept your cooling system clean and used the orange stuff with a minimum of 50%. What you describe is physical damage. Account frozen... |

Make sure that your mechanic, aka Bevus the Butthead or Gubber, does a complete cooling system flush to remove all that stop leak crap and reverse flushs the radiator. That stuff can plug up the cooling fin inlets. It wouldn't suprise me one bit if they also installed the thermostat in backwards...you just can't get good help these days. BTW, I always watch the mechanic working on my car to make sure they do it right the first time. Account frozen... |

Oh, I plan on it. I've heard nasty stuff about using that stop leak stuff. I only used it due to the situation I was in, otherwise I wouldn't have used it. The thermostat works like it should, it heats up to about 195F, give or take, and then it pops open and the temp goes down. So the jack*** got it in right. About the radiator, I think you might be right. LOL Oh well, it should all be fixed tomorrow. I'm going down bright and early, and sitting there watching till its done. :-) |

While we're on the subject I'll regale you with a tale of mine... I took my car into Sears to have a four wheel alignment. I told them that my car was a cast iron biotch to align right the first time, and they scoffed telling me about their new laser alignment hardware. OK, job done and took my car on a short trip and when I got back, all four of my Michelin Hyroedge tires 235R16 v rated 820AAB were cupped because the wheel alignment was radically off. It cost them $145 a pop each to replace all four tires, and still it took them another two times to get it right while I watched them like a hawk. They scatter when they see me coming.
