Have internet! Must post! Internet....internet...

Well we saw seals, eagles, deer, snakes, spiders (lots of spiders), hummingbirds, and slugs (black and banana), but no bears. Bear tracks up the driveway..and there was one loitering around the car park where my uncle works the other morning but we missed it. We did see a bear trap out side the government services building where i went to pay my speeding ticket (Canadians drive so goddam slow!! I am normally a law abiding citizen...but trust me to get my first ever speeding ticket in Canada)

So no bears. No phones either..or internet..or TV. Just my uncle's collection of Kwality 80s videos..and although I admit that 'Big Trouble in Little China' is a much underrated movie..there are only so many times one can sit through it and still find those snappy one liners and big hair amusing.

I am at my Aunts now..and she (bless her, bless her) has internet)

oh wait...we are off to the beach now.

All right Esme!!!! See any Wild Kenzies or Crazy Staceys in them parts?

If my recollection serves me right, you did 30mph going on and off the Chunnel Train...LOL.

...and don't worry about the kiddies...denizens of the other dimensions would quickly send them back.

and?

They are making quite an impact here. Although the youngest really is a city boy. His first day on the beach by my uncles house was traumatic for him. The ground was all uneven and he panicked standing there with his hands in there air crying that he couldn't move. I suggested that he used his hands to help him scrabble over the rocks and he looked at me in horror.

When we arrived they wouldn't leave the house for 2 days because my uncle scared them so much warning them to watch out for bears and cougars.

Good stories, good stories ... I thought Canadians drove like maniacs and you got a speeding ticket? How fast were you driving exactly? Maybe it's just in Ontario that we drive like mad.

We used to go off in the bush camping every summer when I was a kid and there were always bears visiting the dump that was down the road ... anytime we went anywhere near it, we would sing loudly to scare them away. As long as you don't sneak up on them and startle them, bears don't generally want to attack humans.

Apparently we are going into the middle of nowhere tomorrow...there are bears, cougars, the only town internet site is down..and there isn't even mobile phone coverage. (I didn't actually think places like that existed outside of horror movies).

ES Welcome to my type of area. No moble phone is no problem, but the internet is a must.

For the cell phone we do have spotty analog coverage, but not the modern degital as it will not go through the mountains.

The Bears are no problem around here we just feed than all the British visitors that they can eat.

Come down to the states, in most areas no speeding tickets till about 150 KPH as long as you stay in one lane. But if you should get a ticket you can't leave the country for 3 years, poor Daniel.

If you drink while you drive it is best to stay to Ontario, Canada.

That is what I have been told about the bears...my uncle has encountered them a few times and they seem to amble off. There are lots of posters around here warning you not to feed them. "A fed bear is a dead bear".

It seems i was doing 90 km/h in a 70 zone. Which is much slower than than the speed limits in the UK. It just doesn't seem that fast to me, but I wasn't about to argue with a cop after he had taken all the trouble to hide at the side of the road just over a hill where the speed limit suddenly went down from 80 to 70 (I am pretty sure i wasn't doing 90.. but it seemed so important to him, I thought it best not to make a fuss). He had such fun switching his flashing lights on and waving me down. I think it is the most excitement they have had around here all year.

I guess by feeding the bears, the bears start to associate humans with getting a meal and they start to demand it. This could get dangerous.

Yeah and some of these Canadian cops take themselves way too seriously.

That seems to be why..any bears that are encouraged to be around humans get shot. So you shouldn't feed them or leave your trash about where they can get it.

Grizzly attacks bow hunter
Man recovering from injuries after killing bear
Fri, August 17, 2007

GRANDE PRAIRIE, Alberta, Canada — Grande Prairie wildlife officials are on the lookout for three orphaned grizzly bear cubs after a knife-toting bow hunter killed a female grizzly that attacked him Wednesday night.

The hunter, a man in his 30s, encountered the mother grizzly and her cubs just before 9:30 p.m. while he was scouting locations in an area near Secondary Highway 666 and Range Road 73 for the upcoming bowhunting season.

The man, who is recovering from serious injuries in the QEII Hospital, declined an interview request Friday.

He defended himself using a hunting knife and was able to get away despite suffering serious arm and elbow injuries, officials said.

The mother grizzly suffered three stab wounds inflicted by the hunter’s knife and succumbed to her injuries, said Alberta Fish and Wildlife spokesman Darcy Whiteside. Her body was found 30 yards from where the attacked occurred.

“She died pretty quick,” he said.

Fish and Wildlife believe the three bear cubs are still in the area. If they are caught, they will be taken to a more remote area.

“Traps have been set up Thursday but they haven’t been caught as of this morning,” said Whiteside.

“We’re telling people in the area to definitely phone their local Sustainable Resources Development office if they do spot the bear cubs. They believe the cubs are very young - they’re this year’s - so they are not going to be that big of a hazard. They are going to be trying to find food.”

Anyone who sees the cubs or other bears in the area are asked to phone (780) 538-5265 and not approach them.

Whiteside said as hunting is nearing, Fish and Wildlife are reminding hunters to use caution when they are in the South Wapiti area.

“We’ve had a number of bear reports in the area ... so it’s a reminder to be careful out there and really be aware of your surroundings,” said Whiteside. “Talk to be people in the area if you are in a place that you are unsure of because there might be wild animal activity in the area.”

Around this time, food such as berries are starting to blossom and the bears are feeding on them to put on the pounds before the start of winter.

The more we expand the more they have to wander far from home. It is noticeable even 30 minutes from Toronto.

Yeah, its scary. I've been wanting to take my family to an area about 20 minutes south of town called Davis Creek Park and Campground. Problem, bears. LOL Every weekend that I work at our dispatch center, we get calls from campers about a bear in the campground. I have not heard anyone being hurt at all, but, for me, I don't want to take that chance. Plus, I'd probably make headlines, cause if it did wind up attacking any of my family, it would be filled with lead, at least 20 rounds, as close as I could get to it without getting killed myself.

Every time I took my travel trailer (soft sided) with me I'd bring my shotgun along with me with slug rounds...if it's between either me or the bear, the bear gets it.

I'd rather shoot bears with a camera, but I don't want to be his lunch.

Most Bear Attacks have cubs involved or are later in "hibernation loading" season. If one is not armed and a bear wanders into your camp site the best recourse is to seek the shelter of a vehicle if possible. If not, then make as much noise as possible and try to appear large. Stand on a picnic table, if with others stand beside one another and raise your arms and scream and yell. Bang pots and pans.

If actually being attacked, roll into a ball and protect your neck!
