I think Eric's post proposing to auto lock old threads which have not been posted to for 60 days is an excellent idea.

This should specifically apply to the Cafe, leaving legacy posts in the Science and Number crunching forums alone.

Regarding the auto-locking of Cafe unused threads. Can the auto-action not extend to autohiding or complete removal to release disc space for the DB?

In fact, let's just have threads that have not posted in after N days just plain get deleted from the database?

Why would we want to do that? I just want to have records of my "golden" posts. ;)

Keeping them on your local machine as screenshots?

It's like my singing. I love the sound of my own voice.
Similarly, I love the sight of my own posts.
I'm rather narcissistic that way. ;)

Regarding the auto-locking of Cafe unused threads. Can the auto-action not extend to autohiding or complete removal to release disc space for the DB?

A discussion of auto-hiding was requested by Eric when he informed us on the modlist of the new auto-lock policy. After some discussion, Eric decided not to do the auto-hiding at this time.

We humbly request that you pass on a request that they be auto-deleted.
It frees up database space. ;)

I already did suggest that during the discussion, and for exactly that reason.

I like the auto-delete idea also :)

Frees up disk space and prevents other things :)

Bad idea on the delete.

The Cafe stuff may well be junk, but there are useful old threads on the other forums that I have got bookmarked and that get referred to.

In some of the threads at least, there is a wealth of information and comment that is valid for a good long time yet.

Out of interest, what has prompted the 60-day lock?

Cheers,
Martin

And these forums take up how many GB of TB? ; )

I'd wager all the fora fit in a pretty small amount of disk space, comparatively.

(an answer from Eric or Matt would be appreciated...)

< as for the actual amount in size - *Classified* (no need to know here)

If deleted, I hope at least they will be backed up on disk somewhere. These threads could make interesting reading for some grad student in a couple hundred years.

Interesting discusions, and at least 4 or 5 would propose auto-deletion as well as auto-locking.

Not only would this free disc space, possibly to help multi-beam when this comes on stream, but it might reduce references to old activities. I think you know what I mean?
