Thanks for starting this thread.

Some people are going to ask why I opened these new forums. The main reason is requests from people who post here.

Some people have suggested that they would like to have science discussions about non-SETI topics, and they don't feel the Cafe is the right place to ask a question about general relativity or the chemical makeup of gasoline.

Some people have suggested that political discussions don't belong in the Cafe and would prefer that there be another place for such things.

I also feel that the moderation limits on such forums should be different than in the Cafe. Limits on what constitutes acceptable speech might be tighter in a forum on science than in a forum on politics. What is acceptable in a political thread in the politics forum, should be wider than what is acceptable in the Cafe. For example, a discussion of what limits on free speech and what constitutes censorship would be more acceptable in a forum on politics than in the Cafe. And I'm hoping the moderators will use a stronger hand in a science forum and lighter hand in a politics forum. i.e. "Relativity sucks" might not be acceptable, whereas "Relativism sucks" might be (provided some actual discussion accompanies this statement).

Please don't see this as a license to flame, but as a license to discuss. Insults will still be dealt with in the same manner. We still have to follow the University guidelines for hosting such items (i.e. kid friendly).

I don't plan to ask the mods to enforce the distinctions between these forums in a strict manner, especially on existing threads. If you are the originator of a thread and feel it should be moved, press the red-x on a post in the thread and include a message requesting it be moved. If a moderator moves a thread you don't think should be moved, do the same and request that it be moved back.

. . . You are Most Welcome Sir!

Respectfully,

richard

It nice to see that you noticed Pappa. And nice that you wondered, even if briefly, what it meant. It's nice that you try to deduce what it's about, even though you don't ask, but simply put whatever spin you want on it, to suit what's in your head...

Like every 18 months we witness major algorithm changes. The thing is data filtering (algorithm) can be anything and the searching nugget can be anything too. So are we in the right direction?

I'll talk to the people who attended the meeting next week. I've written my Senators and Congressmen already and used some back channels to make the chair of the House Appropriations Committee aware of the situation. It would probably help if you wrote yours as well

It really is a sad reflection on mankind that we can provide billions for war but have to scrape the barrel for science.

Thanks for that 'Story' - the way SETI Boards ought to be . . . ;) ps- i understand the 'Politics' Part ;)

I know I promised to have text for a letter to your congress critters, but politics have gotten in the way.

I've been asked to hold off a little while to discuss the outcome of the meeting of two weeks ago to make

sure we hit all the fine points. So anyway I'm not going to mention politics today.

Instead let's talk about an annual occurrence at my house and its relevance to intelligent life in the universe. In May or June these things crawl out from under the deck
