School penalizes students for hugs, high-fives

.....Unlike some schools in the Washington area, which ban fighting or inappropriate touching, Kilmer Middle School in Vienna bans all touching — and that has some parents lobbying for a change.....

....."I think hugging is a good thing," said Hal, a seventh-grader. "I put my arm around her. It was like for 15 seconds. I didn't think it would be a big deal.".....

SNIP....
....School penalizes students for hugs, high-fives...

Sounds like a good policy if you regard that many people do not like their personal space invaded.

I wouldn't want to "penalise" children (or anyone) though for being communal and natural.. That's quite disgusting.

Personally I would offer my hand to anyone (male, female, young, old etc..) and if they did not take it I would perhaps be a little bit hurt but as long as they kept talking to me I would get over it.

It takes two to hug...

The news story pointed to is not very informative.

I think the school would have a serious legal, moral and political problem if two brothers or two sisters wanted to hug each other...

Most of the kids I know are quite shy to even shake hands with people they don't feel comfortable or safe with..

I suspect the school has gone a little mad.. and the news reporter is far less than clever :(

With all this blanket banning going on there's always going to be some people who lose out or who it's not really fair towards. It"s like the anti-smoking hysteria. Recently a council has just banned council tenants from smoking in their own homes at least thirty minutes before any carers or nurses might wish to visit them. The reason given is that carers would have to inhale smoke fumes - thus damaging their health.
On the face of it, that might seem humane and sensible. But I don't know if such brief exposure to second-hand smoke actually causes lung cancer in non-smokers. As far as I know there is no hard evidence for it.
Also they overlook the fact that people who are often trapped in their own homes because they are not fit enough to go out - this could be any variety of illnesses or disability (not necessarily caused by smoking) need at least some small pleasure in their lives - such as a quick cigarette, or even a box of calorie stuffed chocolates, in order to function at all.
So to my mind, it is very inhumane and dictatorial. And I am a non-smoker.

I think this no-touch rule is absolutely silly.
Humans are a social species, and hugs and high-fives, even touching one's shoulder are at least gestures of sympathy or agreement - and necessary for interaction.
How ignorant can people be to ignore this! What next? Banning to talk to each other?
Account frozen...

It would be pretty strange if something like that really happened. The punishment for repeat offences is detention. So that's kinda like school jail.

Agreed, although its a little hard to understand why a school would make such a rule without knowing any of the context... for example has there been an epidemic of some kind at the school? or perhaps a fad (as school yards tend to get) of pinching bullyism? or maybe even rampant underage promiscuity, with related 'dirty little secrets' that the school may be answerable for... or even just pressure from a hysterical parent or parent group.

WELL PUT there Young Lady . . . LET'S END this insanity takin' place on THIS PLANET - *ENOUGH* w/ 'THE RULES' (each of these Rule purveyors should get a Job ;)

and as for 'huggin' - IF two people @ that school WANT to HUG each other - time to start huggin' and doin' IT often until there's just soooooo many people arrested (OR whatever) that they have to STOP with this rule makin' - and get back to bein' HUMAN . . . (PERIOD)

I'm not sure, but I think that it's actually a public school in Fairfax County. If it is a public school, they might have legal and political problems. Private schools can often get away with things that public schools can't.

The school's principal had this to say: "You get into shades of gray. The kids say, If he can high-five, then I can do this."

Yeah, dunces :-D

Well, thanks for that Nobody, but if they're going to take the slippery slope to a no-touch society, that would exclude quite a few people I guess. Among these might be; football players, faith healers, parents, doctors, boxers, bouncers, dentists, masseurs and ballroom dancers - to name but a few.
But I'm probably going too far. It won't come to that. Will it?
