Hey Beets,

Since you chose to start a new thread, I decided to move my post about Appa Sherpa to here:

Congratulations!

From here:

Appa Sherpa Scales Everest for the 17th Time

Breaks his own previous record, on May 16

Mountaineering legend Appa Sherpa broke his own previous record by scaling the world's highest Mt. Everest for the 17th time on Wednesday.

Together with the five other climbers, including the world's fastest climber Lhakpa Gelu Sherpa, Appa made it to the top of the 8,848-meter tall peak at 8:44 a.m. from the South Col as a part of a unique Super Sherpas Expedition.

The expedition consisted of all members from Sherpa community, the first of its kind in the history of Nepali mountaineering. Among those successfully climbing the Mt. Everest Wednesday include Tashi Tenzing Sherpa, the grandson of the first Sherpa climber Tenzing Norgay Sherpa.

Appa, 47, made the first successful ascent of Everest on May 10, 1990, and set foot atop the summit twice in 1992 and 1997. He has been climbing the world's highest peak regularly since 1990 except in 1996 and 2001.

After completing his 12th summit in 2002, Appa had even announced his retirement, citing family reason. Nevertheless, he could not resist his temptation to scale the coveted peak for long time and stepped atop it for the 13th time in 2003. He had last conquered the peak on May 19, 2006.

The Sherpa are an ethnic group from a region of Nepal high in the Himalaya Mountains. The men often earn their income by working as porters or guides for mountaineering expeditions and are revered for their knowledge in the nuances of mountaineering and the difficult terrains of the mountain.

The Super Sherpas expedition was organized to highlight the role made by Sherpas in mountaineering, as they are so far denied with due recognition despite the fact that most of the summits made over the last 54 years would not have been possible without the support of these veteran climbers.

Only Tenzing Norgay Sherpa, who made the first ascent in May 29, 1953, with New Zealander Sir Edmund Hillary, received some recognition for his achievement from Sherpa community so far.

According to Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, more mountaineers are climbing Mt. Everest this season because of favourable weather conditions. According to Khada Nanda Dhakal, under secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, altogether 27 climbers of five different expeditions scaled the highest peak from Nepali side Wednesday alone.

Dhakal said two Filipino women -- Janet Belarmino Noelle and Carina Dayondon -- set yet another record in Everest History by stepping atop the Mt. Everest, Wednesday. The duo is descending down to the base camp, said Sonam Sherpa, Managing director of Thamserku Trekking, which handled their expedition.

Over 14,000 climbers have conquered the Mt. Everest since it was first scaled in 1953. The month of May is regarded as the best month to opt for reaching atop the peak.

--------------------------------

When you think of that Mount Everest and the highest summits at Himalaya are just as hard an environment to survive in as out in space, this is an amazing achievement. And as said in the text, the Sherpas hardly get any recognition for helping people to the summit. Their achievements in mountaineering call for the absolute admiration.

Just for you: I built this Jacobs Ladder using the NSTs from the Tesla Coil Project, it is much larger then the other one, and more impressive when it runs, though the ozone fills up the room very fast.

By the way, did anybody see the Preakness Stakes being run yesterday? An exciting race (see below). Very disappointing from a betting point of view though: I hit the Trifecta (all three horses 1st. 2nd and 3rd in the right order) and all I got for my $5 ticket was $50. Bah! I've never had a trifecta pay so low! :(

I was watching it while I was playing Texas Hold'em at one of the local
casinos. The entire poker room came to a stand still for the last 100 yards
of the race and saw #4 make a winning challenge for 1st place by a nose.
Either you were very lucky or round robined your bet...that low payout is
caused by too many people hitting that trifecta and the horses being relative
favorites.

BTW...good luck with XII...

Edit: Come to think of it, you couldn't have round robined that bet. A one
dollar trifecta round robined would cost $9....soooo very well done on your picks.

While it may help protect you from cosmic rays I don't think I want to climb it.

Good Morning everyone!

The Cannes Film Festival is on. I think the goings-on are even more fun than the movies. LOL

Here's a handsome couple attending the festivities. Please don't ask me for names, I just don't know the current crop of actors.
