Message 565453 - Posted: 12 May 2007, 0:55:59 UTC - in response to Message 565369.

Hey, I'm slightly upset with this... Since the server breakdown, my average work done (or credit) has been going down at a very quick speed, and it's not fair!!! I don't want it to decrease, since it's not my fault and I was on a high average! Please, I want this solved!

Lui, your not alone. We all are suffering, but these guys are doing a great job on a shoe string budget. Just keep in mind that even though your credit is going down very quickly, that the same is true for everyone. So your relative position should not change much. It seems that my relative position has actually climbed even at a reduced RAC. Most people are completely out of work for this project. Seems that I still have a few left on some of my computers. Once the new server is up and running it will not take long for everyone to get back to where they were. We all know it's not your fault that your credit is going down. So don't worry no one will punish you for it. :-)

Mat,thanks for the updates. You guys are all doing a great job.

Yeah Lui, The guys at Berkeley are pushing the envelope as best they can and have been doing a fantastic job, Since no one is there on a weekend(outside of the servers, security and the occasional person to nudge a server out of a loop), It can wait until Monday as most have gone top other projects to keep busy, Besides they are only Human and need a break to recharge a bit. Without Eric, Matt and the rest working tirelessly behind the scenes(Sometimes in plain sight too), Seti would be nowhere. So just relax and do like the rest of US and join US over in Rosetta or Einstein or something. Ok?

Am I the only one that is thinking with no SETI WU's getting worked on that there are so many computer putting off less heat that the Climate Prediction project now has to adjust for the lower global heat right now. Yeah I know it wont really make a difference, but still I like to think that the amounts of heat my CPU's put off is doing more than making it hot in here.

Of course it's fair -- because exactly the same thing is happening to everyone else.

does anyone know what projects are good for a very slow machine??

I have my PII 400 Crunching on Rosetta . You'll need to have at least 500MB of RAM though as it does eat it up quickly.

Hi DaveSun, I have a PII 400 deschutes attached to Rosetta hostid=495119 and hasn't errored a wu yet. It has 192M of ram and is reported as this:

GenuineIntel
x86 Family 6 Model 5 Stepping 2 398MHz [x86 Family 6 Model 5 Stepping 2] [fpu tsc mmx]
and I'm using win2000 pro

I just switched back to Rosie after a stint at ABC, and it has 30 Rosie wus to its credit.

It used to have a 128M PC133 mem stick. It then would start running, then switch to "waiting for memory". I added one 64M PC100 mem stick, and it's been running fine since.

I also have a Celeron 500 w/256M, win98se, hostid=344035, and it has run fine at rosie for over a year (on/off use)

Hey Astro

Actually mine only has 256MB and has errored 8 WU due to a memory problem but then that could be that I'm running NT SP6 on that box. It's a dual PII deschutes and has been running for 10+ years so far and never one complaint. to alleviate the memory problem I run BOINC as a service and don't log on unless I need to make changes to the setup. so far so good with Rosetta. did some uFluids with it for a couple days but the WUs were taking 30+ hours most times, so I switched it over.

Mine hostid=494246 reports as:

GenuineIntel
x86 Family 6 Model 5 Stepping 2 400MHz [x86 Family 6 Model 5 Stepping 2] [fpu mmx]

I'm just happy to be able to help in this way. When you're back in business I'll be happy to continue.

Have a good weekend guys.
Looking to the stars with wonder.

Although one of them is only a dual Pentium II 350Mhz machine and yeah its struggling (6 days estimated at 315 MFIO!!)... does anyone know what projects are good for a very slow machine??

My 400 mHz Celeron, 128MB RAM, 5GB disk machine does fine on PrimeGrid. It takes about an hour and ten minues per WU. I tried installing Leiden on the same machine, and it wouldn't, because the app needs more space than the entire capacity of the hard drive!

You could try uFluids - although be warned - most of the units take about 15 minutes on my AMD XP1900+ machine, but occassionally you get one that takes up to two hours or longer.

just a note here about another XtremLab only requires about 479 KB of RAM and the WU's are all small. For the credit buffs, that is instant since it is your WU done alone, when finished, credit is granted, no waiting for some else to compare to...

Cheers for now

Yes, I have a 350 and a 700 mhz pentium I use to run ABC@home, very small WU's, well, most of them anyway. ABC is very generous on credit and it only requires a minimum of 64mb of ram :-)

I am running SETI@home (when available), Einstein@home and QMC@home on a 400 MHz Pentium II Deschutes with SuSE Linux 10.1, 512k L2 cache, 320 MB RAM, meeting all deadlines. Only recently I made the mistake of upgrading the Einsten app from 4.16 to 4.21 during a run and I lost about 30 CPU hours. But SETI is not running, so it switches between Einstein and QMC. Einstein WUs of the S5R2 type take about 80/100 hours, QMC is even heavier.

Retirement projects...

Seriously, the money saved by not using it would pay for one 40 times quicker in a year's time which could then do the same work as the retired machine would have done in just 1.5 weeks.

Be efficient. Save resources.

A quick note (which I'm writing from home) to let everybody know that Jeff and Josh have just headed out to Menlo Park to pick up the new science database server at Sun. Nobody will be around to really work on it this weekend, but we'll get crackin' on it first thing Monday.

Awesome. Thanks for the update.

Take your time. The data is thousands of years old, anyway, so what is an extra week or two? :-)

Have a good weekend and have fun playing. I guess doing two gigs means having to move all the equipment around at least four times? That gets old, I bet...

Cheers,
Free
