Message 562166 - Posted: 7 May 2007, 13:01:51 UTC - in response to Message 560257.

Just had a thought. As a way of thanks to Sun Microsystems for their genorous donation may I humbly suggest naming the new server Helios.

In case you don't know (as unlikely as that seems) Helios is the Greek sun deity.

OK, I'll support the notion of naming it after a Sun-God, but there are SO many more interesting and obscure variations, How about:

Amaterasu (Japan)
Apollo (Greco-Roman)
Freyr (Norse)
Garuda (Hindu)
Helios (Greco-Roman)
Huitzilopochtli (Aztec)
Inti (Inca)
Liza (Africa)
Lugh (Celt)
Re (Ra) (Egypt)
Horus (Egypt)
Shamash (Sumerian)
Surya (Hindu)
Tonatiuh (Aztec)

K.I.S.S.

Name it after me. After all, Mom always called me "sun".

It appears I'll have to wait until the new server is up and running. I have been making repeated attempted to u/l my results on the last WU's completed, and keep receiving a "5/7/2007 7:39:59 AM|SETI@home|Scheduler request to http://setiboinc.ssl.berkeley.edu/sah_cgi/cgi failed with a return value of -106" error message.

Oh well, stuff happens...

Let me please suggest "Sol" (which happens to be sun in spanish) although I believe (AFAIK) that it is also the astronomical name for our warmth-giver.

Patagonia

"Sol" is also the Swedish word for sun.. =) But i like Helios more :)

I assume the reference is to the hunter, and not to the nuclear pulse propulsion project... ;-)

I think the point is to name it something Sun-related to show appreciation for the donation... Perhaps the validation systems (currently on bruno) could be renamed to Orion, as it will be "hunting" for valid results...? :)

Sun lives by the motto, "a rising tide lifts all boats."

So how about “Dos Boot” for a name?

Well if you don’t like that here are some more and they ARE “Sun Microsystems” related:

Buzz Light Year
Buzz
Light Year
Mr. Lightyear “to infinity and beyond!”
Woody
Rover: for the Mars rover
The Green Door
Project Oak or Oak
Java

Well?

Helios is totally Greek. The Romans called the Sun "Sol" from which the designation "Sol system" in many scifi shows originates. The name Helios is the current word for Sun in Greek even today. In Italian the name for the sun is "sole".
I am half-greek half-italian, and live in Athens Greece.

Still waiting to get a new work unit. The server must have gone down right after I downloaded my last work unit on this computer, so it's been about 4 days now.

Jens - Not trying to be rude, but have you read any of the posts the past few days about the issue with the database server? IF everything goes right, the tech guys (and gals) will receive the new server sometime Monday according to what was posted before. They will then perform their magic, and at some point work units will start flowing. Sit back, enjoy the weekend

swilliams284 - Didn't mean for it to sound ignorant, I was just stating my status like a good number of people here. I usually like to keep my statements short and to the point.

Hate to rain on the parade, but the plan is to put the old disks (boot drives and all) into the new system when it arrives. It's like a brain transplant. If all goes well the machine will come up thinking it is "thumper". And so the name of the new system will be... "thumper."

Actually, Kronos might be better (or just Saturn). Otherwise known as the "first/best sun," if you want to get into mythology... Granted Helios is "better known," but Kronos/Saturn was "the first / the best / the primeval ruler of the heavens." Of course Kronos sounds cooler. ;o]

http://www.kronia.com/thoth/thoth10.txt

The first article therein is enlightening from a mythological point of view. The second and third are on other subjects, though the second is interesting (re: electric comets).

Oh well..., if the system thinks it should be called "thumper", than "thumper" it is. I take it that there is/will be a Sun Microsystems/Amaterasu (Japan)/Apollo (Greco-Roman)/Freyr (Norse)/Garuda (Hindu)/Helios (Greco-Roman)/Huitzilopochtli (Aztec)/Inti (Inca)/Liza (Africa)/Lugh (Celt)/Re (Ra) (Egypt)/Horus (Egypt)/ Shamash (Sumerian)/Surya (Hindu)/Tonatiu (Aztec) logo on the outside Matt?! :-{)

The only issue the system MAY have is if any SW is keyed to the old servers HOSTID. BUT, that can be corrected (If the hardware is identical) by putting the NVRAM of the dead thumper into the new system.

Unlikely since just about everything we're talking about is open source.

If you haven't read the front page news, Sun is coming through with a replacement science database server (yay!) which will be arriving Monday afternoon.

More on this later (or read previous threads to find out more information about the outage).

What made the server crash
