Message 621274 - Posted: 17 Aug 2007, 19:14:31 UTC - in response to Message 620325.

Nothing that I can see in the interactions of MrGray and ML1 suggests either was using "shut down" in the sense typically used on this message board. What was meant by "shut down" was, most likely, shooting down virtually every example, purported as evidence of UFOs and ETIs, posted.

Then we disagree. Gray said "You've continually tried to shut this thread down." He didn't say "shoot this thread down," and he didn't say "shoot every example down," he said "shut this thread down."

The only typical interpretation here, based on the fact that this is an internet forum, is what MrGray meant when he said he put ML1 on ignore.

That may be your interpretation, but that doesn't mean it's typical. Be that as it may, that's the same post, I might add, when he said "shut this thread down," explicitly. Since it was explicit, it's reasonable to take the words at face value, given that he did not, as you interpreted, say "shooting down virtually every example..."

The point is simple and easy to see, without interpretation.
You assumed that MrGray and ML1 were arguing in an internet forum fashion, when instead they were not getting along and it just happened that they discussed things on an internet forum. I am willing to bet if their discussions took place in some other medium, including face-to-face, similar words and phrases would have been used.
As for the second part you quoted, somehow, you missed the point: the only part of this that was typical of an internet forum argument (as opposed to an argument that just happens to occur over an internet forum) was where MrGray put ML1 on ignore.
Capitalize on this good fortune, one word can bring you round ... changes.

Jeebus, you're a smart guy, why is this an issue?

No, I didn't assume anything. I read what was said and used the plain meaning of the words used. Nothing more. That Gray may have intended something else was not self-evident because his terms were explicit. Explicit. You see, there's a difference between, oh, say "shoot every example down," and "shut this thread down." They're close, but they aren't the same.

You're a mathematician or something aren't you? If you say 2 + 2 = 4, that's explicit as well, right? I mean, other mathematicians could read that and say that you intended to say what you said right? Certainly, some readers could, based on context, assume that you meant to say 2 + 2 = 4.0000000000001, because it's really really really really close, but it's not what you said, right?

I am willing to bet if their discussions took place in some other medium, including face-to-face, similar words and phrases would have been used.
As for the second part you quoted, somehow, you missed the point: the only part of this that was typical of an internet forum argument (as opposed to an argument that just happens to occur over an internet forum) was where MrGray put ML1 on ignore.

Did you notice that Gray spoke explicitly when he said "No responses from me anymore. Added to ignore list." Did you notice that that part is not under contention? Why not? Because it's explicit. If, as you said, "their discussions took place in some other medium, including face-to-face, [and] similar words and phrases [had] been used," there might have been confusion there as well. Because words mean things, and there's a difference between "shoot every example down," and "shut this thread down."

Rush

LOL.
I spoke with MrGray last night. He did not say "Sarge, you were way off base."
Furthermore, shoot and shut ... .
Let's see: when someone says "I win, you loose," do you think the person is commenting on something not being tight? Or do you recognize that loose was supposed to be lose?
How about this one? "I wondered about the fields for a while wandering if there is life on the planets circling other stars?"
(I've seen these kinds of errors from college students, as well.)

No, I didn't assume anything. I read what was said and used the plain meaning of the words used.

I have also read them.
MrGray and I had a run in or two a few months back.
We now talk in these threads, in PMs and on the Calm Chaos board. I believe we are able to make ourselves pretty clear to one another, across several posts. If he or ML1 wants to come along and tell me I have misunderstood, that is something which they are welcome to do and I would be more convinced by their responses.
I have also read several of your posts. These include your posts regarding other posters' complaints about interactions and moderation here. I continue to maintain that you mistook this disagreement as being typical of an internet forum argument, yet neither MrGray or ML1 said something about red-X's. The only clear cut example is when MrGray told ML1 he was put on ignore.

Now, I'll interpret here a bit and suggest that maybe MrGray will like the thread bumps.
But, enough's enough. Until MrGray or ML1 joins this discussion about what they meant, you and I could go round and round 'til we're both blue in the face. There's no point in that.

For the sake of clarification, not arguement:

ML1 and I went round and round on the STS-75 NASA footage. After I showed the so called, "Ice Particles", clearly passing behind the tether he would continue to say he didn't see it! This was frustrating to me. I made animated gifs from the footage and everything. After that it seemed to me that he would stop in to trash the data on anything I posted. His patent pending, "Nothing here, keep looking", got to me.

So...

On that day in question I got sick of it, believing he was not even looking at the data, but posting to detract from the thread. I told him so and added him to ignore. Having a conscience, I was relatively quick to apologize and unignore him.

Sarge, What we were discussing wasn't about what they meant because I responded to what was said. Mostly because I can't read their minds. I took their words at face value.

Once again, it's about me. Forget actually making an argument, or a point, or even being coherent for once, just talk about me personally. Really, it behooves you, it really does.

Sarge, Sarge, Sarge.

Haven't you, of all people, learnt by now that Rush just loves arguing for arguings sake.

Yeah, duh. I've said so, and here's that word again: explicitly. You may call it "arguing for arguing's sake," but a more accurately description would be that I use the discussions to test my arguments, to consider other points of view, and see what other people think and why. I use these discussions to see the world around me and see gain differing perspectives that I might not have noticed myself. That doesn't mean I agree with them or that they are valid--it does mean that I test them to find their strengths or weaknesses.

He is active in as many threads as he can be, deliberately winding people up to provoke a response. If people didn't encourage him he'd lose interest.

Do you ever tire of being utterly wrong? I'll bet I don't even open 75% of these threads (the percentage may be even higher, I don't know), simply because I'm not interested AT ALL in being "active in as many threads as [I] can be," I couldn't care less. I just discuss things with people and I chip away at their premises.

Why? Because I sez so....

Wow, you're like Mr. Bean. Well, minus any humor, coherence, or consistency.

Rush

I red-x'd you Rush.

Your soon to be my only ignored member on the SETI forums.

Congratulations.

At least I won't have to watch you hijack this thread any more. I will miss your political babel, though.

I encourage anyone who believes, as I do, that Rush argues for the sake of arguing, to join me in a happier place without Rush's bad karma.

We can always watch him on the Dr. Phil show in the near future.

Interpret that.

MrGray...sometime ago you posted a link to a conference about Jaime Maussan. The ending was quite interesting. One of the things that interested me most was the following.

Regarding the M13 message sent by Arecibo and the one that was in the crop field, did you notice (on our message in the depiction of the solar system the 3rd planet is displaced to show where we are) that the crop field pic, shows the 3rd and 4th planets plus a cluster of four "stars"? are displaced.

Any thoughts, especially with all the new findings on mars

PS, to short track...it starts at the 01:16:53 time in the conference

I'd be interested to see any links and pictures you can show me because I have ET on the brain. This is a disease where after watching to many UFO and Alien videos the subject looses his memory in the wee hours of the morning.

I'd love to know exactly what your referring to so we can research this together.

As an aside, why hasn't there been a clear and focused video of a UFO with all the high quality camaras out there...hmmm.
