Many in private emails in our seti cafe community have expressed that they believe these boards are somehow vacant more than they used to be to the detriment of everyone of varying viewpoints and ability to speak.....

I think this is a worthwhile topic. Especially given the current climate.

What are your feelings on the subject?

Mayhap we should just allow others to speak that are not necessarily a member of a specially favored group? It's hard since the 'team ' has imbedded itself this way......

Let's see...some people aren't posting here (because they don't want to) and it appears to be a nicer place with a good cross section of view points and no flaming. Unbelieveable....go figure!

One should not consider or believe that the lack of disagreement with you and others is somehow a successful 'consensus'. When BULLIES reach out and fight against others and thwart their right and ability to speak and squash them....so that they have no minority views available to express or even the last flight to cry out and petition for a hearing...what is that for you? Is that your freedom?

It's just a thought....and to quote Shakespeare, 'methinks thou dost protest too much'.

If what I said wasn't the truth then there likely wouldn't be such attention given to it......

Many many nice and kind people of all stripes of philosophic views/political views/socioligical views etc have routinely been rounded out of here like unworthy participants. Many of us have complained that in the interest of openness and freedom of opinion this not happen. Perhaps if you complain and persist to the extent that this is NOT so then that is indicitove of the fact that more TOLERANCE is needed here?

Many , I think and suspect, believe that this place is stale because it has become a haven for a 'highschool like clique' that is wholly innapropriate and beneath any sort of standards that a forum should ever hold.

Some think that a forum should exist that allow for civil discourse of many varying ideas...not fewer ideas. Some believe that discussion of those differing viewpoints, if civil, are positive and constructive elements of society and indeed, are necessary to it; those that seek to undermine it are in effect not civilly amenable to the necessary discourse that is fundamental to a rational and peaceful society. But what do I know?

I would suggest that if you and others are not happy posting here in a moderated environment then you have alternative choices. Communicate in private, as you have suggested you already do above, or post elsewhere. The vast majority of the people on these boards are happy with the current climate, if they weren't they wouldn't be here.

"Vast majority?" What, you mean 10 or 20 people? 50 maybe? That's how you define vast majority? That's about all that post regularly. Few if any of them express any ideas, they just post. Anything. Everything.

The actual "vast majority" doesn't post at all. Ever. Regardless.

You're actually referring to a tiny tiny minority that seems to exist simply to waste resources, i.e., "here's another word," and "look, I posted after you did."

"You know, everything is not an anecdote. You have to discriminate. You choose things that are funny or mildly amusing or interesting. You're a miracle! Your stories have NONE of that. They're not even amusing ACCIDENTALLY! 'Honey, I'd like you to meet Del Griffith, he's got some amusing anecdotes for you. Oh and here's a gun so you can blow your brains out. You'll thank me for it.' I could tolerate any insurance seminar. For days I could sit there and listen to them go on and on with a big smile on my face. They'd say, 'How can you stand it?' I'd say, 'Cause I've been with Del Griffith. I can take ANYTHING.' You know what they'd say? They'd say, 'I know what you mean. The shower curtain ring guy. Woah.' It's like going on a date with a Chatty Cathy doll. I expect you have a little string on your chest, you know, that I pull out and have to snap back. Except I wouldn't pull it out and snap it back - you would. Agh! Agh! Agh! Agh! And by the way, you know, when you're telling these little stories? Here's a good idea - have a POINT. It makes it SO much more interesting for the listener!" --Neil Page, Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, 1987

I've noticed you haven't contributed anything either for or against my propositions....

You did however manage to sneak in a homosexual joke. I think that is a 2 pointer but I'd have to consult my scorecard.

Chris S. It's a bit funny....This thread was aimed at noone by name yet you seem to take offense to it by heart and personally. Does it hit too close to home for you or are you a bit paranoic? We've addressed noone in particular but the only complainents are you and 2 others. Why? If I were an interrogation officer in some sort of police department I'd automatically suspect you as guilty as charged. Why argue against something that was never levelled at you as an accusation unless you somehow deep down feel culpable about it?

Just another thought about things....but what do I know...

If by that you mean we don't get the flaming that we had last Autumn then you are right. A lot of the posters that were causing the unpleasantness have left, leaving it a nicer place to be in.

to the detriment of everyone of varying viewpoints and ability to speak.....

Anyone with a view can post on these boards, and can disagree with anyone or anything, provided they stay within the published rules. If they don't then the Mods will take appropriate action.

I think this is a worthwhile topic. Especially given the current climate.

I'm not sure who this "specially favoured group" or "team" you refer to is? Are you suggesting that some people are given favouritism above others? If that is a genuine concern you are at liberty to contact the SETI Mods at Berkeley and make your views known

All in all, I get the feeling that this is just a bit of stirring and mischief making, and I will treat it as such.

You view nearly everything that way, don't you?
Have anything new to say?
If not, you are welcome to post elsewhere.
Oops, that's your line.

LOL and haha haha haha.

Question

If this is all so ho hum boring, and considered beneath your intelligence, why do you bother to post on these forums AT ALL???????

I'm lead to believe that you're possibly visiting the UK later on this year. I hope to god you lighten up before you do, you sound like a right misery.

And with all your negativity you sound any different?

Gentle(wo)men,

You will have to excuse my ignorance to the history of this board but if there is a specific problem or poster that you have taken offense to, why not name it. Get it out in the open for all to see. As long as it is posted within the rules (yeah we all have to abide by the rules here and in life) then I can't see any reason to speak in riddles or innuendo. Most people here have a great vocabulary (even if they CHOOSE not to implement it) so I'm sure you would be understood.

As for playful postings (ie. last person to post, last 2 letters etc.), I feel that (for me atleast) they are a welcome stress reliever. My everyday life is too serious already, so a little fun is wonderful.

And as I have stated previously, there are a plethora of thread topics to participate in. As long as one can be tolerant of others (you don't have to agree with them, just be polite), the free exchange of information is here for you.

Respectfully
Paul

Lighten up Rush...This is just an internet message board...If others choose not to hurl insults at the intelligence of other posters like you do...Then it's their choice...There are plenty of boards where the more intellectual conversations you crave are in progress right now...Meanwhile as always...We will continue to absorb your contempt.
