While this thread is for 9 year anniversaries, we should remember that anyone celebrating any anniversary is important.

Congratulations to all!!

. . . Congratulations to All the 9th Year Crunchers @ SET BOINC

Thanks.
I am still a bit away- May 21 was my start. wow- Nine years. I did take a brief break when BOINC started. It would not run well on my old PC, and I had to wait for a Vista version for my new one. But, I am on it again. Slowly recovering lost ground. . .

Oh wow.... see ya in 5 years.

Congratulations to eveyone who's been here 9 years, makes my own 4 years look short in comparison.

Ah... if only I had known about seti@home 5 years earlier. Hopefully this project is going to be arround for another 9 years and even longer! By then even someone like me would be considered one of the earlier members. :D

I thought the first day to register was April 6, 1999... I know that I waited in anticipation, How did some of you get in "days" ahead of me?

The Classic class pages are at http://seticlassic.ssl.berkeley.edu/classpages/. And although there are a few people registered in March and April 1999, I don't think the project was open to the general public until mid May 1999.

Not clear when it opened but the general media announcement came out around May 13th or 14th. I recall seeing it on all the major web news sites and even the network nightly news? I had heard nothing of it prior to that point but I signed up almost immediately.

I can almost claim 9 years now but I took about a 6 or 7 year break in the middle.

I was already participating in "distributed.net" in mid-March, 1999, when I first hear about "SETI@Home". In the news/web blurb it was stated that the project would be available for DL on April 5, 1999. On the evening of April 5th, I visited the website and registered... Thus my entry at #16 on the class page for 6 Apr 1999, the date/times on that page are UTC. If I had internet access at work back then, my "join" date would be Apr 5,1999, The first day that the project came public!

I'm pretty sure that I DL'd the original "screen saver" to my trusty Pentium 60 at that time, but I know that my registration date is true... Tue Apr 6 02:36:53 1999. I didn't have any insider connections, I'm just a "geezer" in Texas.

I explained to my then 17 year old son that I was making a lifetime commitment to supply computer proccessing power to this project and have been crunching ever since.

Although I made it into the SETI Community on 05 Oct 1999, I remember trying to join SETI several times in the months before that.

I think I just repeatedly had a bad timing (servers down).
On the positive side, I still remember the SETI V1.06 GUI Client finally starting to crunch its very first WorkUnit after the whopping ~340k Download over a crappy 56k Modem.
It was already close to nighttime, but I remember staring at the Screensaver for a long time that day before finally going to bed. Performance was 'adequate' thanks to a fresh Athlon 500MHz CPU, and the WorkUnit finished within some 14-15h of Screensaver action - and that definitely felt good

Wow, I had forgotten that part entirely -- I was lucky to get 28.8, never had 56k (still don't) didn't get broadband cable till 2003 or so. So all of my 9600 classic WU's came down over a crappy 28.8 modem :-).
