Caves on Mars, water on Mars ! Hmmm, seems to me that it is important to get people there to see what's really going on. If there is life on Mars it may (or may not) be related to life on earth. As bits of rock from Mars have made their way to Earth perhaps the homeland for us is Mars. Who knows ? Nobody at present.
We really need to go there, more so than ever now.

I have explored many caves and can attest to the thermal stability and the many strange things that live in caves and nowhere else.

I think the first mission to Mars should be designed to explore the caves as a priority.

Thanks for the post. :D

My pleasure Graeme Stretton,

With China's space program headed to the Moon soon I would hope we'd try something new with Mars.

Easy mission? No.
Without risk to Astronauts? No.
Interesting as heck? Yes.
Would I go? Yes.

I think the caves on Mars will turn out to be far bigger, deeper and more complex than anything on Earth. This is because Mars has lower gravity than Earth, and the crust is less active with fewer earthquakes. That makes it less likely that the caves will collapse.

It's interesting to read that the caves trap heat during the day and stay warm at night. Maybe living things could have found refuge in them when Mars was losing its atmosphere and cooling off. Be a good place to look. The caves would also be a good plce to build a base- the rock would protect it from radiation and we might find that the caves have accumulated quantities ofimportant materials like water.
