i hope you had a great time with the SnapApp people. and, oh joy, you are still wasting my cpu time. news on your site is again not information. boinc was ready for the public. boinc version 4 was going to resolve all problems. you are betraying your most key donators. the donators of cpu time, online time and disk space. quote: September 3, 2004 The SnapApp folks were here for most of the afternoon. They replaced the processors with ones that are faster and have larger caches. More importantly, we talked about how to stabilize the system. The plan is to simplify both the HW and service mix as much as possible in the hopes of removing the variable that is causing the hangs (and of course they will be going for the root cause at their lab). We altered the startup so that a bare minimal set of services are running. And we are going to only use the 18000 head unit for now, keeping no data on the sd30 expansion. This means moving some data around. We first have to move the upload/download data to a temporary volume on the sd30, then reconfigure the space on the 18000 head, then move the uldl to the head. The move to the temp volume is happening now. Tomorrow morning we will do the reconfiguration and start final move. With luck we will have the project up by EOD tomorrow. |

I beg to differ about the quality of this particular news item. This is probably one of the more informative pieces of information we've had regarding the problems since June. Before I read your post, after having just looked at the home page, I was thinking that they've finally done what everyone was complaining about and told us what was going on. 1. they don't know the root cause, but SnapApp will be looking at it. 2. they are eliminating the sd30 expansion and only using the 18000 head unit for now. 3. they explained a process of temporarily moving data before they can reconfigure the 18000, then run the 18000 solo. 4. "with luck" this will all be done by EOD tomorrow. In case you are not aware, tomorrow is the beginning of a three day holiday and I think they are to be commended for working it. I've been pretty critical of this project in the past, but come on, give them some credit, they're trying to inform us here! |

(and yes, i know the difference.) btw. we, the worldwide population, should be aware of the fact that the people at berkeley seem to have a 3 day holiday? i give them credit, i donate. |

So when you had your 3 week holiday, you came in to work on the hardware and write code? You sir, are a gentleman and a scholar. And they repeated information??? > btw. we, the worldwide population, should be aware of the fact that the people > at berkeley seem to have a 3 day holiday? Nope. I wouldn't think you'd be aware. I am largely unaware of all the holidays in other countries. > i give them credit, i donate. (See my gentleman and scholar comment above...) |

The sooner the WU's start rolling out the sooner people will stop going stir-crazy after staring at "No scheduler responded" messages for days on end! They might even start using the most appropriate Message Board! Kieron ;) PS Science is supposed to fun as well as serious right? |
