Before I went to bed I checked CNN and the story said he was in the hospital for pneumonia...But they made it sound like the prognosis was good and that he'd be performing as scheduled for Anderson Cooper's new year's special...What a shock when I woke up this morning and saw the news that he was dead. ![]() PROUD TO BE TFFE! |

Sad about JB. Never was much of a fan of his, but always respected his showmanship. I am a big fan of Maceo Parker, his former band leader. Mrs. Miggins: The Scarlet Pimpernel, Mr. Blackadder! He's so exciting, don't you think? Blackadder: Actually, I think he's the most over-rated human being since Judas Iscariot won the AD31 Best Disciple Competition. |

Mr. Brown, R.I.P. He was a genius, a mess – and, once, a hero UNION-TRIBUNE EDITORIAL December 27, 2006 James Brown's accomplishments were so varied and staggering that he may well have had as big an influence on popular culture as, oh, the Beatles and Elvis Presley combined. As Philip Gourevitch wrote in a masterly 2002 profile of Brown, “He stands virtually unrivalled as the pre-eminent pioneer and practitioner of the essential black musical styles of the '60s and early '70s – soul and funk – and the progenitor of rap and hip-hop. ... [His] music and dance moves have been so widely studied, reinterpreted, ripped off, and sampled by so many artists of so many different musical dispositions throughout the world that it has become nearly impossible to say, 'This is where James Brown's influence ends and the rest of music begins.' †Unfortunately, Brown, who died Monday at 73, was as well-known in recent decades for his demons and run-ins with the law as his musical genius. But a genius he remained. Consider the hundreds of electrifying concerts he gave long after he qualified for Social Security. Or his last hit, “Living in America,†a song that Brown was hired to perform in 1985 for the film “Rocky IV.†All he did was transform the song, penned by a pair of bland veteran studio musicians, into a rollicking, joyous homage to his country – and himself. But what's rarely remembered about Brown is how at a critical moment in U.S. history, he was a hero. In the riot-filled days after Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination in 1968, Brown – at the height of his popularity – urged calm. He arranged for a concert he was performing in Boston the day after King's murder to be broadcast free on local TV, then turned his show into a de facto prayer service for the slain civil rights leader. The city did not explode, as so many others did. Especially in our current era of self-centered celebrities and thuggish musicians, this act of grace is both moving and inspiring. The singer insisted that strangers address him as “Mr. Brown.†So let us conclude by saying, Mr. Brown, you will be greatly missed. There's never been anyone like you, and there never will be again. me@rescam.org |
