But will that lead to a rethink on Iraq?

And equally important, will this put pressure on the President to remove Rumsfeld?

Well, we look to be having a new Congress. If current counts hold, the Democratic party will have control of both houses. There will be a re-canvas in Virginia tomorrow to make sure there were no errors in posting the results. Then, given the small margin by which Webb leads, Allen could call for a recount. However, once the early and absentee ballots are counted the margin may be large enough to make a recount moot. Meanwhile, Montana looks to be dumping Burns. If so, the Dems will have taken the Senate.

So we will have he first female Speaker of the House in U.S. history, and a good chance to investigate how we got into a miserable situation in Iraq. We may also see the Medicare prescription law amended to mandate Government to negotiate the lowest possible price for drugs.

I hope that the new Congress has the guts to stand up to the idiot in the Whitehouse and his puppet masters.

Agreed, this A.M. it is still only looking like the Dems will take over both sections of Congress. The House is definately Dem, the Senate is still up in the air.
The challenge now is for the Dems to come thru on the promises they made, or the Republicans will kill them in '08. The Replublicans have taken a drumming on a ton of issues this election, and deservedly so. But the Dems have 2 years to come thru or their time is up! The Republicans will be watching and recording EVERYTHING. Any misteps by the Democrats and the Replublicans will make them pay dearly next election!! The Replublicans will fervently hope Gore and Kerry are vocal, outspoken Democrats these next 2 years.

Though of course, combat experience is nearly worthless as a skill in terrorism, because terrorism is, by it's very definition, the opposite of open combat.

What you should really look at is how many irrational religious fanatics made it a personal goal to head to Iraq and take up arms. Which, for the most part, means they get to be slaughtered, often like fish in a barrel.

The most recent estimate that I have is that the Democrats win the Virginia US Senate seat. The Republican candidate indicated that he did not want to drag the process out - which to me would mean no recount.

Thank Goodness!

The last recount was awful.

Actually, there are no battle trained terrorists in the world.

The reason for that is that every single time a terrorist or group of terrorists have met Army units or trained police in open combat they have failed miserably.

These murderous thugs are cowards in their core.

I suppose you never heard of combat engineering...the uses that terrorists can make of it have many applications on the dark side.

True, but they are still murderous and therefore are effective in spreading terror.

"Combat engineering?" You mean retrieving damaged tanks from hot battlefields? Building roads and bridges while under fire? Dealing with portable bridges and heavy-duty pontoons while under fire or under cover of darkness? Clearing minefields and plowing under active defensive trenches?

Yes, I've heard of combat engineering, I know/knew some--we used to call them sappers. And, if that's what you meant, well, like I said, it's nearly worthless as a skill in terrorism, because terrorism is, by it's very definition, the opposite of open combat. The terrorists aren't using tank recovery vehicles to haul 72 tons of M1A2 tanks out of a hot combat zone.

If you just meant blowing things up, well, they can learn that on the internet, at home. Wayyy safer.

The recent democratic congressional victory does not represent a resurgence of liberalism at all.

See:

Repulicans Lose the Monopoly on Redneck Culture

Also, according to the Canadian Press News Wire Service, exit polls suggested that political ethics counted most in the voters' shift to the Democrats. 75% said that corruption and scandal were important to their votes; The Iraq war was very important to only 66% of the voters.

In Conneticut, for example, voters reelected Senator Joe Lieberman, even though he favored the war and ran in oppposition to the Democratic Party. (Lieberman had lost the Democratic Primary to Ned Lamont, and had been urged to drop out of the campaign by the Democratic leadership. But he stuck to his guns, and the independent voters came in for him 2:1 against Lamont to give him the win.)

So, imho, if this election shows anything, it is that integrity counts.

Btw, this congressional election puts things back to the norm in American politics. According to the New York Times, congress has been controlled by the party opposed to the President's party 87.3% of the time. So, things are merely back to normal.
