since i joined this thing i have a fear of telling anybody i know that i am looking for aliens on my computer. In Ireland, if you tell that to anybody, it still carrys a heavy jail term. And if they dont jail you, you get shipped off by the men in white coats to a special padded cell to contemplate your thoughts.
Even if you try to explain the seti thing to a normal rational thinking person, they will still tell other people you know that you are looking for aliens on the internet.
For that reason and to avoid the mental hospital I dont think I will be tellin anyone about this stuff. Does anyone else feel this way or have thoughts about the topic?

People used to think I was crazy when I talked about Seti@home, so I now talk about other things instead. Unfortunately, it hasn't made any difference.

Well, everyone on my team has matching white jackets with shiny buckles that we can't quite reach.

We all have these nice rooms, painted soft pastel colors, and padding too!

I would have responded sooner but I had to type this message out with my forehead.

Gotta go, nurse is here with a ....... zzzzzzzzzzzz

Hi John and wellcome. :-)

I won't say that I'm afraid of telling about my participation in this project, maybe because I'm very much into distributed computing and because Seti is not my only project. So the fact that I participate in Seti, Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence, is not embarrassing for me at all, as it's more the computing science I'm interested in.

I see this project as a testbed for the development of BOINC, which now is used for many projects for more "Earthly" purposes.

And I don't think we'll find signals, and even if there would show up another WOW signal, which could be confirmed, we wouldn't know what to do with it at all.

My €0.02

There are some people who will be receptive to conversations about something like SETI...And many others who will roll their eyes and wonder what you've been smoking...But if you present SETI as a part of BOINC...And then mention some of the other great projects available to participate in...Then some of the "eye rollers" might not think you're so crazy...Face it...When you talk about using a computer for something other than creating documents and playing games you're gonna overload some peoples minds...Because to them what we're doing with BOINC is too STAR TREK to be believed...Right now i'm thinking to myself "Too STAR TREK...exactly!

I agree with you, Dan, except I have experienced a lot of interest in DC tech as BOINC, when I have told about my projects, also among laymen and computer illiterates. The find it very interesting that I, with my little computer at home, have participated in particle research and in protein folding to help with finding new drugs and cures for illnesses. They understand fine the idea of offering your processor power to projects like those, and they think it's really cool. And no matter what people might think about ET, this project is the mothership of all DC technology. And that goes also fine with people in general.

I haven't seen any eye-rollings or heard any star trek comments...

And even if you do see some eyes roll or hear a few Star Trek comments, you will still see the occasional eyes light up to hear a kindred soul. Be confident that you are helping to expand research out into the universe. Never let others stop you from doing the right things as you see them, and for my money, the SETI@Home project is one of those right things!

Things are not that bad in India people say good try and who know something might turn up as our universe in pretty big. And dump the scrap in dust bin ( the talk ) you all know our society, they all said the same things when sombody said earth is round and said It was just maths when Albert Ein.. presented relativity and they still say that special relativity is just maths not practical. Live for our ideas & our dreams we will find them one day

I agree, if you think your doing the right thing, it doesn't matter what others think. I tell everyone that I have SETI@HOME on my computer, and I watch for anything cause if they think we are the only planet in this universe that has life on it like ours, then like Jodie Foster said in the movie 'Contact', "I'll tell you one thing about the universe, though. The universe is a pretty big place. It's bigger than anything anyone has ever dreamed of before. So if it's just us... seems like an awful waste of space. Right?". I think it is true what she said in the movie and I for one realy beleive it, but that's me.

I don't care what others think of me and I always say that everyone has their own beliefs.

We seem to be forgetting that he could be JAILED for telling people.

I agree that there is nothing to be ashamed of, but I think " caution " would be the word of the day.

I suspect a degree of sarcasm and/or facetiousness! Just a joke. Its common knowledge that, in the UK, anyone can do what they like and can't get sent to jail - there's no room left in the prisons!

If we commit a crime, we have to serve a sentence collecting stolen shopping trolleys taken from the nearest supermarket. Unless you're under 18 - then you get sent on a free holiday to Barbados to contemplate your next endeavour with a team of like-minded "hoodies". It's called "building social responsibility", apparently.

There are other exceptions too. For example, any law abiding citizen who intervenes in any altercation to prevent a crime must be sent straight to jail. Such an infringement of a criminal's human rights is morally unacceptable in a modern society. The police enforce this rule so rigourously that there's no time to stop the criminals. This is why the prisons are full, see?

Its a great justice system. I'm proud of my contribution though the high taxation rates.

And, yes, I'm being facetious. ;-)

I was just kidding about the laws in ireland, no prison and on mental hospital but there is a general social stigma about looking for aliens. When we are not in happy happy internet land we all walk down the street, go to work, meet people we know and do what ever we do.
95% of people dont think about wheather there is life on other planets. most people dont care if there is life out side there owen front door.
Human nature is what it is and YOUR family and YOUR work collauges and people YOU know love to share scandle about the mad fella who is looking for aliens on his computer.
The real world can be a cruel place. You can become a social outcast very quickly by saying the wrong thing. You still have to go to work every day and meet people who are not understanding and dont give a sh*t about you.
In this forum there are people who think in a similar manner and its safe to openly discuss what seti does, and to let your mind fantasise about what other life is like in distant galaxys.
I dont believe in God, this is purely science for me. this is my religeon. I dont think we will contact other life during my life time but its fun to chase it anyway!!

My brother thinks I'm crazy for running BOINC and buying machines for it. But I'm also learning things from it because I'm trying out different OS' and trying to get BOINC to run on them.

It is really a science project and even directed by serious scientists. So if you would like to tell about your participation why not to tell others in cool mood with above preface. And also you can tell that many reputable international companies, worldrenown university teams (students, some scientists), even some public organization volunteer teams participate in this project. So this would make fine serious impression to any likely prospective participant or spectator.

I would say if you choose right words you can convince many future participants. For many of us this is some way of dream come true thing.
