Well, my 2nd post here: Don't like tooting my horn, but finally hit my goal: 4000+ RAC on #1 position (I'm sure 'anonymous' will have an answer and shoot for 5K RAC, 'cuz I'm not getting those ES's as quickly as he does).

Machine: 4 x 3.2Ghz/dual core Intel 7130's (8MB L2 each core). With hyperthreading, it's pulling in as 16 CPU's.

Congrats on your milestone, it's one that few can touch.

Thanks LGMFM! My *nix box just keeps crunching and crunching. No problems here. My Windoze box.... Well, it's Windoze. I have been toying with the idea that my Windoze PC problems are part hardware, part BOINC and part Windoze. I remember reading here that there is a problem with BOINC losing connections. BOINC will lose connection to the clients. BOINC will lose connection to the Internet. I see it all the time, hardly a day goes by where it doesn't. I've also been thinking that my CPU may be on it's last leg. Problem is, it's a PGA-478 pkg. It's old news and the MB is only a few months old. I just looked at a price list for the computer parts store I go to and they don't list a socket 478 CPU or MB any more. So my best bet would be to upgrade, again, to socket 775. Hmmmm.... That's what my *nix box is, an LGA-775 pkg. It's also 64 bit. Sounds like a plan.... (-:<

Doncha just hate it when you have a problem and someone says: "It works perfectly for me"??

I'm running two boxes here... Win Server 2003 on a PIII 1 Gig and XP Pro on a 2.8 Gig Celeron. The XP box occasionally hiccups, but the PIII just keeps on chugging, 24/7. Only prob I had with it was when the original 280 Watt power supply blew.

Oh yeah. Out of the blue I decided to get a new power supply for my XP box. Something told me it was part of my problem before. I swaped the power supplys and the new one looks like a Christmas tree with the multi-colored light flashing from it. Albeit unknown to me when I bought the thing. Anyway, there was a major drop in temp, causing me to believe the old [less than a year old] power supply had a problem. That's why I believe my CPU may be cooked and is just hanging in there. A new mother board and CPU will confirm that, when I can afford them that is.... (-:<

Silly question time again... Have you tried a disk check? If you've been running BOINC a long time, it may be causing wear and tear on your HDD, due to the write frequency of every 60 seconds.

I always enable SMART (in BIOS) when I fit a new HDD. At least then, I will have a timely warning if the HDD is about to fail.

I did run a few disk checks, and no problems were reported.

My backup PC [FreeBSD v5.4] has a HDD that is about 10 years old. I had that drive when I started with "Classic" SETI back in 1999, with Win98. Back in 04 I started BOINC with that same PC and HDD with WinME. I then built a new WinXP box and decided to dabble in *nix, so I installed FreeBSD v5.4 on my old PC. I crunched BOINC on it until BOINC upgrades caused me to go into no-crunch mode. I decided not to continue crunching with it and put it into crunch retirement and backup PC mode. It stays shut down. When My WinXP and FreeBSD v6.0 boxes went down, I fired it up to stay connected to things on the Internet.

My point is, all my HDDs are Western Digital. I will buy no other brand. If a HDD can go for 10 years and have no problems, I am sold on the manufacturer.... (-:<

I once had a WD disk that lasted a whole two months :D Come to think of it, that was about 10 years ago *lol* One of those very very big 1Gb disks that DOS couldn't handle so I had to install a harddrive manager - and an extra harddrive controller as computers back then couldn't handle more than two drives (before EIDE). Hmm. Come to think of it - my new one can't either... MY GOD! I've travelled back 10 years in time!!! *lol*

Time for me to crow just a little bit. During this weeks little outtage, my mini-farm (four boxes, of varying age and speed) broke the 300,000 mark!

My 2 WinXP boxes (Dells - Inspiron 2650 + Dimension 3000) each have over 100,000.

And my ancient/slow Celeron (Mendocino) is about to break the 10,000 mark!

My first PC, a 486 DX2-66 screamer, had a 1.2GB WD HDD and it went belly up in 96, after 6 months of ownership. That was when I got this 8GB WD HDD and it is going strong to date. I replaced the generic IDE controller with a Promise EIDE. Had DOS v6.22 and Windoze v3.11. Moved up to Win98 and haven't looked back.... (-:<

P.S. We're a bit off topic. But it was my fault.... (-:<
