When going to the Question and Answers forums, you can not directly get back to them, anymore. The "Message Boards" takes you to the list of Number Crunching, etc., then you have to click Questions and Answers to get back to the list. This was broken yesterday with the update of the forums, and needs to be fixed.

It's in the (long) list of forum bugs I found that I sent off to Matt over the course of yesterday and this morning. ;-)

I'm sure it'll be fixed in the long run. At the moment it's probably more of an issue why some threads load fast while others load extremely slow.

I've noticed that it appears with Mozilla Firefox but not with IE.
Did you too?

Same here !
Only way to read anything is to select reply.
Then the history comes up.
It's been like this for a few days now.

This is all very interesting. I've decided to try Opera v9.0 recently (at first I thought the forum changes were just the way Opera was rendering the pages) and I haven't experienced any problems at all.

Does this say something good for Opera?

It's driving me nuts! I know there must be a reason for the changes to the fora, but what is the reason, please?

If I make a post, and send it, I cannot see it when the thread relaods.

http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=31004

The only way I can see the post I have made in the thread is to make another post. I then can see the first post I made, but not the second one!

This is NOT a time-delay or lag thing. I'm using Windows XP SP2, with Firefox 1.0.7

Also, despite the notice in each thread stating only the last 5 posts are displayed, the entire thread loads, anyway. Not such a problem as the first, though.

This forum software is faster. It uses only half the instructions of what the old version did. There are also more options in it, both for participants and moderators. Plus it's more secure. And more buggy. :-)

(We've been testing it on Primegrid for a while now. No overly big problems there, but then again, those forums don't have a separate Q&A section and no threads of 1000 posts and more. It also has its Q&A section in the same index as the main forums. BURP has this as well. Most projects out there do it this way. Seti has two indexes, hence why the Q&A index link points to the main index).

I had that error, but only when going to the message board from the button in BOINC Manager. I cleared it by going to my "Your Account" and logging in again.

This forum software is faster.

Not wishing to be aggressive here, but I would disagree that the new forum software is faster, going by the time it takes me to "see" a post I have made.

I can guarantee that once I send this post, it will be invisible to me until I have made another post.

Admittedly, many of the threads are pretty big, and with all the added sigs graphics downloading from 3rd party sites, it's no surprise that some threads are loading slowly, but being unable to read one's own posts in a reasonable time-frame is a pretty bug, I'd say!

I agree it is buggy, but that is being worked on. Still, the forum software is faster in executing requests. So it works faster on the server, less instructions to do per forum participant is less overhead on the server.

It's probably some of the hook ins to the database that are holding you back. It also appears to depend highly on what browser you use (local cache), on what OS and what kind of internet connection.

Have you tried different browsers?

Aha!
It is becoming clearer!
As I check out brand new threads, I find where there should be 2 posts, there is only one showing. Where the thread is brand new, there are no posts showing.
So........
It would seem the new software is failing to display the most recent post.
Whether there is an adjustment in Firefox that will "cure" this "bug" is the question.
So..........
Any ideas, anyone?

OS is XP SP2 (legal) with ALL updates, Browser is Firefox 1.0.7 but I have had the same troubles with IE6.

By the way, this isn't by way of complaint: I know full well how new software can be. I also know how useful it can be for users to let the developers know what's not right, so it can be corrected.

The crew at Berkeley need and deserve our support, and our thanks, for providing these boards to use. The extra work involved in developing and rolling out new software to keep us happy is appreciable and appreciated.

Keep up the good work, and thanks! :)

Thanks, Ageless. I HAVE tried IE6 as well as Firefox. I replied to your post last night, local time, but the post I sent doesn't seem to have materialised in this thread.

I'm sure the team will sort out the bugs eventually.
I'd like them to know my statements aren't by way of complaint, but rather for feedback. After all, if you aren't told something's broke, how can you know how to fix it?

So which browser(s) do not show the posts directly after you made them? Do the posts eventually show up?

I am not developing this forum software (thank God ;)), but I do know who is and am sending him the bugs at a regular interval. It's not someone at Berkeley either.

OK...

More to the "missing post" saga.

Whenever I make a post, someone else's post appears at the top of the thread.
I think this means the most recent post in any given thread is held back in a queue, waiting to be pushed forward by the next post, making popular threads appear slow, and making people think their posts are taking a long time to arrive, when they are simply in some sort of buffer.

Not so popular threads take longer between receiving posts, so there appears to NO activity!

The posts show up AFTER another post has been made. IE6 and Firefox both have the same problem.

In order that this post shows up, I shall immediately make another after sending this one!

I also made a post before I could read the one you made. It contains my simplified theory as to what is happening, but will not be visible until after I make this post. I hope all this makes sense!

This is the first time I've seen my previous post immediately!

I wonder if our programming hero has fixed the problem?
If he/she has, congrats! :)
