Per the graph of the preceding post I see that the number of active Seti users has dropped only about six percent (from the April 20 smoothed peak), so that is no disaster, yet. But, the trend in not over, yet. It is pretty disgusting to see all those erroneous units and the lack of fresh data. I thought that the seven-receiver contraption "Alfa" was going to give us new data. |

WRT number of active users: Users are considered active when they return new work within a certain amount of time. (14 days for example). With the longer running enhanced WUs it's more likely for users with slow computers or low resource share to fall off this list. Regards Hans P.S: The number of credits given out by seti seems to have stabilized at around 17.500K, coming from about 24.500K |

As for erroneous units, etc., that's what this thread is for...they ARE trying to do something about it. Adding my sig, so as not to be accused of being a non-contributor... Isn't the picture actually rather worse than that? Up to April 18th or so the number of users seems to be going up at a fairly steady rate, faster than it is now going down. There doesn't seem any particular reason why the number of new users a day would have slowed down much since then (or at least, I can't think of one). So the downward turn is probably more like double your figure or worse if that is taken into account. Are there any similar charts for computers - it would be more worrying still if the users leaving are the multi-computer ones. Mike |

A graph of the number of active hosts is available at http://www.teamocuk.com/cprojecthost.php?s=b86a4170fd1db18b3091c20bf84ec360&p=SAH The chart for active users and hosts was increasing then it tipped the other way. Now the rate of decline is faster than that predicted so this suggests the rate of decline is increasing. There will be a lag in these graphs due the time period required to be flagged as inactive. |

Remember that old golden rule - treat others as you would have them treat you? Until those running the show here (and their cheerleaders) remember that lesson, things will get worse before they get better. http://www.setiusa.net |

Well, I set "no new work", and when my cache is drained up in about 5 or 6 days, I will be leaving as well. And taking TWENTY THREE fast computers off the project with me. Regards, Daniel. Maybe some of the rest of us will move up in the stats finally! Have fun with your Corvette. Oh, what program will you use to test those pc's with now that you are no longer crunching for Seti? |

Would anyone really miss me and my two little old EMachines? I'm really sorry Crunch3r has felt the need to leave us. His App gave me the ability to do more work and that is what I feel this is all about. Now with the enhanced apps out we need all the help we can get. If Crunch3r or any of the others working on optimized apps come up with something to allow more work to be done then that is great with me. My poor little machines need all the help they can get. I care very little about the RAC but I get a kick out of watching every new WU heading in to be checked. The RAC and even the total credit are just fun things to watch, in the end the only credit that matters is who finds ET first. Me and my two little old EMachines won't be leaving SETI but I for one will truely miss Crunch3r and all his fine work. I hope he has a change of heart and comes back to the project. My decision to suspend Seti had nothing to do with getting even or trying to prove a point, strictly a matter of it wasting more resources than accomplishing anything. I personally pulled the plug on Seti about 3 week ago. After running enhanced in earnest for just short of a week it was very obvious that there were major problems. WU's that would run for 4 to 7 hours only to error out with a -9 or other errors. Not just on my lowly single host but many, many others. Far more failures than successes. It doesn't matter to me if I got 1000 credits or 0.1 credits for it, it was still many hours of crunching for nothing at all, the 'science' included. Then on May 8th, when someone questioned why the 'not ready for prime time' software was released, the response from the developer was "Ever wonder why the word "dead" is in the word deadline. :(". That was sort of the 'smell the coffee' point for me. All things considered, it made me wonder how well, or if, the science app really works at the level of actually finding that elusive signal Or is it all just another a layer of lipstick on the pig? So now here we are, nearly a month later and the original problems I had, and other problems I avoided but were affecting others, are still plaguing those still crunching. It may well all get fixed eventually and all the kinks ironed out, my present view of capabilities and credibility of the project may improve and I'll be there crunching again. But until that time, for me at least, Seti@Home as it stands at this point, is just a hole to throw time and money down. |

Martin, thanks for that. The current number if I calculate it correctly is indeed dropping even faster than the number of users in RandyC's users chart (about 20500 hosts from the peak to the present). And if the growth in host numbers prior to April 18th is extrapolated upwards the drop since then is something that would very greatly worry me if I were a project Admin. Thanks again, Mike |

@ Halifax-Lad I'm with you. Do you want to get banned for 31 years and your account & credits deleted at a Boinc project ? Predictor@home is your best choice. |

I'm going to raise a touchy subject, but it's very relevant. I'm leaving because I am tired of the fighting. SETI is only one of the ten projects I am running. Since enhanced came out, its been like a bunch of three year olds fighting over a new toy. I actually used to enjoy the crunching thread here, but there are other places to hang out (so to speak). I think the witch hunt over the few extra credits Crunch claimed (but didn't get) really just pushed me over the edge. I'm not angry at anyone, but I am just looking for a less hostile place to be. I've got about a day to finish my last WUs and I'll be gone. Later Fear will keep the local systems in line. Fear of this battle station. - Grand Moff Tarkin |
