Dear Seti@home Staff

05/27/06

Since 2001 I have ran your program in hopes of helping find that faint signal that would tell us that we are not alone. And for all to know I am a United States Viet Nam era disabled Vet. So with this in mind I bring you to your user of the day. Silverhaze.

I take exception to the fact that a child is let to post my countries flag upside down, and then you promote him. I for one like so many others love our country and have given more than most to protect it. It is my belief that this project is a scientific one and not a political billboard. Please take this posting off of your main page and please let’s keep this project a race to find life, and not a place to show your political views on.

Thank You.

I'm 19 years old and an austrian. Personally, I'm very interested in space science. I like to watch the sky with my "Meade Explorer 4500". It's a quite good teleskope.

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I like watching the sky imagine that there are other creatures in this large universe doing the same. I can't belive that we are the only life in the big universe. It would be an enormous waste of space. I want to help searching for extraterrestrial life.

By posting that you are a U.S. vet, you've exposed your political views. Would you have them start by deleting your post? The task would not be an easy one since they would also have to ban religious comments as well as any talk about how sciences has affected politcs/religion.

The fact he's a veteran tells us nothing about what part of the political spectrum he's on......He hasn't voiced an opinion on that.

What do his political views have to do with some punk posting disrespectful images anyway?

Scientific/psychological trends. If he was not proud of it, he would not say anything about it and it also seems that Silverhaze flying a flag upside down bothers him. Was the upsidedown flag what inspired this anti-political post statement? If that's not a statement on political stance, I guess I don't know what is. Why did he take time to say he's a veteran to say this is a scientific board?

This reminds me of the amendment proposed to make flag burning illegal. Bad idea. This country was formed because people fled political, speech, and religious oppression. Continued additions of amendments reenforce the oppresin that our fore fathers ran from and fought against. Once it's illegal to burn a flag (omitting and fire codes), people react with a backlash. It's human nature/psychology. People will gather privitely to burn flags and some will probably post video of it on the net. It's likely to strengthen underground moments in the U.S. that carry anti-U.S. sentiment and now they will have been given a SYMBOL with an ACT to strengthen their beliefs with ritual (flag burning). Possibly, this is comparible to the bible and prayer or attending church when it was illegal for those who fled to North America in the first place. This is has serious ramifications. Let's not give them the power of an act on a symbol and if you believe in your symbol, stand behind it and represent it. Don't give it power to act against you.

You are openly invited to try burning an American flag in my presence.

Backlash would become the understatement of the year.

BTW, you're a fool if you think the founding father's would support that action or consider it freedom of speech.

Are threats allowed in the forums? And you called me a name... That's mature...

I have no desire to burn the flag. I have better things to do that burn flags or fight people like you. Besides, my statement was about a flag being upside down, not burning it.

I think you missed the point anyhow. It's about empowering those who do want to burn flags. You empower them by denying them the right. If they are allowed to, they are less likely to do it because it gains less attention. Pay them no mind and they are disempowered.

Riiiight

......and criminals are empowered when they are getting butt slammed in the pokey, huh?

Think about what you just said.

Do people murder because it's illegal?
Do people do drugs because it's illegal?

No, the law isn't and never was the catalyst for the crime.

I'm not sure how drugs and murder are related to burning a flag which is legal if not in violation of fire codes. Because it's a piece of fabric and it's always legal to burn fabric.

Anyhow, because I think that you are overly agressive and prone to violence without much of an education, I'm disempowering you.

Typical leftism.

You can't disprove the FACT that law isn't a catalyst for crime so you ignore the person who proved you wrong, thus making you feel like you have "won" because you no longer have to see the common sense proof that you are not.

If you guys paid attention every once in a while, instead of closing your eyes to the truth, losing elections wouldn't come as such a shock to you.

Oppressors or those who have never been oppressed, probably never will understand the founding fathers plight and reasonings for limiting the amendments and allowing the states power to decide.

If anyone wants to make counterpoints to what I've said without name calling and threats to my physical being, feel free.

I think Dr. Morris was unhappy with the disrespect being shown on the SETI main page. Political views are expressed all the time in various forums provided here, and the Doctor's comment is itself a political view, but the main page is not the appropriate place for such an offensive display.

1. The founding fathers placed no limit on the number of Amendments which can be placed in the Constitution. Try reading Article V.

2. If the founding fathers believed in Socialism, then they would not have formed a Republic and written the Constitution of the United States.

3. To imply someone has to be a victim before they can understand cause and effect is ludicrus. Can you not feel the heat of a flame or do you have to be burned before you know fire is hot?
