Siran t' T'Khasi,

Did you read the last 5-6 posts? You are also only asking for the old WUs which are no longer available. I checked each of your boxes, and you are still only crunching asking for the 4.x WUs which are almost all gone.

Message 311357 - Posted: 20 May 2006, 13:30:28 UTC - in response to Message 311336.

Or get the latest app_info.xml file from Crunch3r's site.

If he does that, he also needs to get the new optimized app. He only crunched 4.18 before, so just the app file will not help.

Plus now with Enhanced 5.15, I am unsure where that is in the works.

The app_info.xml file on Crunch3r's site still appears to be back at WU version 512, so if downloaded it needs the <version_num> line about 10 lines from the end changing from 512 to 515 to work with current WUs (and updating in line with future WU versions from then on). The other references to 512 in that section relate to Crunchr's application on the same site, which is still 512 but quite happy crunching 515 WUs if app_info.xml is adjusted, or so it seems.

See comments from Josef Segur on this topic in other threads for detailed information about this and confusion with Beta WUs.

Cannot find it in my folders.

Nick

It's in the C:\\Program Files\\BOINC\\projects\\setiathome.berkeley.edu if installed to the normal location.

If I still cannot find it, can i just delete all BOINC and start over?

You could do a find file on the drive for it, and delete it that way.

Or if you do an uninstall, delete the folder, and reinstall, but then you will get new numbers for your machines. I wonder if the file is hidden, or something.

It must be, since i recall deleting it last night, even from the recycle bin.

Thank you for the help Pooh!

I got Enhanced work and it is running fine. I just had to "search" and then delete the two I had on the computer.

Just out of interest, where did it find the other two app_info files?

/EDIT
Oh yes, BTW, as far as I know, BOINC only reads the app_info.xml file at start-up.
Deleting the file/substituting a replacement won't have any effect until BOINC is Exited and re-started.

I am not sure where they were. I searched the whole C drive.

I'm glad I don't bother with optimized clients. Don't get me wrong, if people want to put the extra effort into maintaining them then I'm glad for them. However, I can fall asleep in the bathtub if I want and don't have to worry about uninstalling xml files or whatever whenever a new SETI version comes out - everything updates itself automatically.

Hi Pooh,

I did mention that my *nix boxes are both using the old v4.07 app. What you stated above would explain why they aren't getting work. They both have the app_info.xml file. Do I need to edit it to get new work on those boxes?

My XP box does not have the app_info.xml file and hasn't since I upgraded to v5.4.9 BOINC. It just hasn't downloaded the v5.14 app yet, which is why I'm depleting my cache and trying again.... (-:<

Hi Siran,
Yes, you should either delete the app_info.xml file and let boinc download the stock application or choose an optimized enhanced application and create a new app_info.xml file for it. Simplest would be just to use the stock app since the optimizations will not add too much to your crunching speed. (20 to 40%, not the 300% or more that you got between the original SETI app. vs the original SETI optimized apps)

As far as I've understood it, there's no app from Crunch3r for 5.15's. At least not to get for people outside of the group of "Crunch3r's chosen few".

So, with Crunch3r's app, even for 5.12's there won't be work to download, as they are now 5.15's

Nope. I'm getting work for 5.12 just fine. You need to add version 5.15 to your app_info file if you want to switch to optimized now.

Otherwise your downloaded 5.15 WUs will be lost.

Version 5.15. is mainly a bug fix for Win9x AFAIK.

Here is what I have in my app_info.xml and I just flipped one on my boxes a few minutes ago and got work for it.

All I had to do was kill boinc, delete all files in the projects folder and replace them with the new ones. Start boinc manager, manual update to get the wait 10 min message.
After 10 mins work started coming in - so far at least the first WU get flushed within 2 min of processing after that all is normal.
Done this on 3 boxes today so far and results are validating fine.

Hope this helps...

I did not get a sensible reply

Just because you didn't like the reply doesn't mean it's not sensible. If you'd read the release notes you'd have seen for yourself that most of the fixes were bug related. There were one or 2 new features which may of may not be of use to you.

Since I have not seen a WU in 3 days now, what gives

If you'd taken the time to read a few of the other threads, you'd have noticed that there is a new core client that has been released. It processes only Enhanced Work Units, the previous clients Standard units.
As of a couple of days ago all splitters were set to supply only Enhanced Work Units. There will be no more standard Work Units, other than the odd reisssue for late returns or errored returns.

If you are using an optimised client or manager, then you probably have an app_info.xml file in your BOINC directory. That stops new clients from being downloaded. If the new client can't be downloaded, you can't do the work, hence no workunits being downloaded.

EDIT- corrected name of optimised app file for stopping download of new clients.

Yep.

Whilst you may have the time to read and search, some of us don't

If you don't have the time to look at the threads that are already on the screen, then i don't know how you could make the time to read even a part of any thread.
It's just common courtesy to at least spend a couple of minutes to see if others have already asked the question you're seeking an answer for. The less people ask the same question ovver & over, the easier it is for others to find the answer to not only that question, but others as well.

...you should actually try to help others instead of trying to offend/belittle them.

I do. Of course if they're offensive or belittle others, i just match them. They set the tone, i tend to follow.

Hi,
You need to add version 5.15 to your app_info file if you want to switch to optimized now.

Otherwise your downloaded 5.15 WUs will be lost.

No, not in general. As Crunch3r stated in another thread there are only two kinds of workunits out there: "normal" and "enhanced" (well, not many "normal" units left ... ;-)) but no "5.12ers" or "5.15ers". As long as you have a reference to an enhanced application in your app_info.xml you get enhanced workunits. My app_info.xml states that I have application 5.13 (because I was also a little bit confused about the whole app_info.xml-stuff). In the work tab and in the result file they are showing up as "5.13ers". But if you look at the current results of the other crunchers you see that in fact they are "5.15ers".

For example: WU #78995286

Computer #1178403 is my computer. The bottom line of the result details reads "application version 5.13". But you get the line "application version 5.15" in the other result details.

The wrong application number is only a "cosmetic" issue. As long as the science is valid there are no problems at all.

I have just "downgraded" the app_info.xml on one computer:

<app_info>
<app>
<name>setiathome_enhanced</name>
</app>
<file_info>
<name>setiathome_5.12_windows_intelx86.exe</name>
<executable/>
</file_info>
<app_version>
<app_name>setiathome_enhanced</app_name>
<version_num>512</version_num>
<file_ref>
<file_name>setiathome_5.12_windows_intelx86.exe</file_name>
<main_program/>
</file_ref>
</app_version>
</app_info>

(no, there aren't any other lines ...)

And up to now, everything is running fine ...

But as somebody mentioned you might get problems if you are also crunching for seti beta. It looks like that Boinc is confused about the similar application names and version numbers of standard seti and seti beta. This might be the reason why you need a reference to the latest application version of seti in your app_info.xml.

Regards,
Carsten

Since the others aze running the Standard App, they automatically downloaded 5.15 when it was released. Anyone using the "app_info.xml" file has to make changes manually.

I'm sure I did.

In any case, the users using the Standard Application will download, use, and report the lastest Application version.

Those using the the Enhanced Applications will have to manually change the app_info.xml file to reflect any changes they want/need to show. This means that if they want to report that they are running version 5.99, they can. (Not that anyone would believe them, but they could report it.)

As you pointed out the version number appears to be "cosmetic".

Personally, when I converted my old (and creaking) P4 yesterday to running the Enhanced Application, I just shutdown the old BOINC client, downloaded and install the latest BOINC client, installed Crunch3r's Optimized Application and his latest app_info.xml file and finally, restarted the BOINC client. (I did remove any entries in the xml file that were prior to 5.12.)

The system is up and running. Slowly, but running much as I expected it to. The old WUs were running in about 2 hours, the WUs I downloaded yesterday are estimated to run about 8-1/2 to 10 hours each. This is on a par with what I expected to see.
