Its me once more.
I've read the insults and abuses in an other tread. I feel ashamed to read such remarks forom others which should be humans like me. We are the highest develped species on this planet, but if I see such things, I think that lions are more social then sume humans.

What is the problem here. BOINCis, as SETI@home classic was, a project to unite the world. With projects like this we should overcome differences and problems and not make a step back.

Science should be the power of mankinde, everybody can bring his specialisations in, so we should begin here and know.

The whole is more then the sum of its particles.

*Less you are part of a particular project you cannot really know profound motives behind decisions. We can but assume.
A project can unite people without having been created for that purpose.
Also people ressent being told what they should feel or do:
that's called invalidating.
People are most pleased feeling _heard_.
This isn't being bitchy, this is called basic human sciences.
I suspect both groups want to be acknowledged: berkeley developpers AND s@h users.
When one is unheard for a long time, it's not a big surprise to find frustration/anger developping.

*Why "should" your definition of what science be imposed on others?
You will have a hard time making people cooperate who feel unheard.
(trust me on that one)

I understand you want to create peace in the group which is a noble striving.
There's just more to peace than a few parameters :)
Others made valid points and feel disrespected.
Do not invalidate them more because they express their frustration at the lack of response/feedback/announcement from berkeley.
One cannot consider what is not being said.

I feel s@h users want to "feel integrated" to the project and not only with words/flattering anonouncements read elswhere that they are appreciated: they want _practical involvement_!
I don't judge, I merely observe.

I agree with you insults won't help.
Though critism isn't perse nice to hear though the goal can be genuine: to improve collaboration and enthousiasm.
But to call every kind of critism "non positivism" (like it sounded in an email from a so-called berkeley co-worker) scares me.
That's despotism.

Yes, I should know that this will happen!

1. What are doing here is the same lions are doing!
2. I don't want anybody to tell what he should do are think! I don't undertsand
you behaviour towards this idae of this group, which will show what it mean to
live with other people togther and how you should beahave.
3. I have nothing against appropriate critism, but to spam here cannot be such a
way(I don't expecially mean you).
4. If a user doesn't feel integreated he or she could bring out its critism but
not insult somebody.

But well my definition of science has not to match to everybodys opinion of that. But big projects, where you need an amount of money, people or ideas, can only be mastered by an huge amount of the world.
So I repect you opinion, but you can clearly see, that the work on BOINC is very hard and so we shouldn't make it more difficult.

It's another expression for "What's on my mind" it stems from "Penny for your thoughts" and old english saying to someone staring off into the distance.

Though why someone added the 4 Cents I don't know, must be inflation.

Do you see critism as making it harder on berkeley?
Some problems might have been avoided easily with simple measures.
Such a big project has to reckon with a large group of users as you said it.
That's exactly the point.
People need directives and explanations, that seriously cuts down the need to moan and "spam" about the lack thererof. That's all.

not trying to answer for Basti, only expressing my own personal views on this: No, critisism as such is not making it harder on berkeley - but maybe, just maybe, the type of critisism that attack them _could_ make it harder. There are kinds of critisism that may even make it easier but I personally don't react the same way to that as I do to the other kinds.

While I'm not David, I think I already know the anwser to this.

What David meant was the future of public distributed computing is in having multiple projects all running the same infrastructure. In this case BOINC, which would allow the great computational capacity of all the volunteers to be put to a more consistent and steady stream of scientific work.

SETI@Home’s conversion to BOINC is a huge step in building a large distributed entity for which the scientific community will need to engage the general public by expressing what the potential impact of there research is going to be to get people to join up and donate resources for it.

SETI@Home needs BOINC to introduce new technologies, like processing workunits from the southern hemisphere, more detailed workunits from Arecibo, as well as bringing Astropulse to life. All of this couldn’t be done with the classic platform, so BOINC was born.

BOINC needs SETI@Home, just as much as SETI@Home needs BOINC, it would be very bad if BOINC couldn’t support the largest distributed project around. At the same time BOINC also needs to enable other scientific projects by providing them with a framework that they can build their application on top of. So the BOINC Dev team needs to support the projects who have committed themselves to the BOINC path.
